00:00Paris. A report of a willingness of the United States to back a peacekeeping force led by Europe
00:04on Ukrainian soil after a peace deal is agreed. Emmanuel Macron said the security entities will
00:09be in place a day after a peace is agreed upon. And Steve Wyckoff and Jared Kushner underlining
00:17the fact that there will be this US backstop underpinning all of this. Macron met with
00:24Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier on Tuesday, agreeing greater security measures
00:28to protect his country. Let's hear from French President Emmanuel Macron.
00:35These security guarantees are key to ensuring that a peace agreement never means the surrender
00:42of Ukraine or a new threat to Ukraine. All participants in this meeting of volunteers
00:53want one thing. Peace in Ukraine, peace in Europe.
01:00Peace in Ukraine, peace in Europe.
01:03That was Emmanuel Macron. Let's bring in Clovis Casali, who's at the Elysee Palace, the official
01:07residence, of course, of the president of France and the place where all the actions have
01:11been taking place today. Clovis, good evening to you. Tell us what you can about what has
01:16been said there.
01:17Well, I've just left the room where this press conference took place. A historic day for Emmanuel
01:23Macron. All participants saying that significant progress has been made. Volodymyr Zelenskyy,
01:30the Ukrainian president, hailing this agreement. This agreement for the first time putting in place
01:38security guarantees once a ceasefire is reached. And of course, the presence of Donald Trump's
01:45special envoy, Steve Witkoff, saying Donald Trump believes the carnage has to stop Adamant that he wants peace as
01:56soon as possible. And the U.S. taking part in this meeting of the coalition of the willing is significant.
02:03It's the first time a U.S. delegation is taking part in a summit here in Paris of the coalition of the willing and the U.S.
02:10committing to a leadership when it comes to monitoring a potential a ceasefire.
02:17This is if Putin, Vladimir Putin agrees, of course, to a peace and they are the hardest yards still ahead.
02:26Those were the words of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Also talking about sending potential troops to Ukraine,
02:35France and the U.K. ready to send troops if a ceasefire is reached, not to fight, of course, those boots on the ground,
02:44but to be some kind of a peacekeeping mission, if you will, to make sure the ceasefire is respected.
02:53And there was also a German Chancellor Mertz who said that his country was ready to send troops to neighboring countries,
03:02neighbors of Ukraine. So a significant day here in Paris with this summit of the coalition of the willing attended by Steve Witkoff,
03:13the envoy of Donald Trump, who also said that he believes we are very near a significant agreement for the U.S.
03:22and an agreement on prosperity for Ukraine once peace is reached.
03:30By that he means, of course, reconstruction in Ukraine that would bring jobs and prosperity to Ukrainians.
03:37That's what Steve Witkoff said. Indeed, Witkoff talked about that robust prosperity deal as he spoke about.
03:44Macron outlining the international force to be led by France, U.K., Poland, Italy, Turkey.
03:49A real sense, Clovis, that there is a sense of unity behind Ukraine now.
03:53And as you say, underpinned by the fact that Kushner and Witkoff were there.
03:59Absolutely. And that was a bit of a surprise because we weren't expecting them in the room for the press conference.
04:07They weren't announced beforehand. And of course, it was a significant decision to have them in the room.
04:13Or should I say from there, from them to decide to be in front of journalists, answer questions.
04:19France, the U.K., ready to protect Ukrainian skies and land if a ceasefire is reached.
04:26And also, it's important to mention that Turkey will be playing a pivotal role when it comes to maritime affairs protecting the seas.
04:36That was also announced today during this meeting.
04:40And journalists during the press conference tried to ask questions about Greenland
04:44because remember that Donald Trump has repeated again that he wants to take control of Greenland,
04:50that Greenland should be the 51st state of the U.S.
04:54Well, journalists ask questions about Greenland.
04:56Can the U.S. be trusted?
04:58Will the U.S. always protect, come in the defense of NATO members?
05:03Because, of course, Denmark and Greenland are NATO members.
05:05So kind of a difficult situation there.
05:09And I can tell you that no leader in the room really answered questions on Greenland.
05:15And Steve Witkoff didn't answer concerns either when he was asked about the situation in Greenland.
05:21And Donald Trump's words, of course, Europe did release a statement earlier today not criticizing the U.S.
05:28or antagonizing the U.S., but saying that Greenland was an essential priority.
05:34Those were the words in order to bring about security on an international level, but also for the transatlantic level.
05:43Greenland's a priority.
05:45Greenland belongs to its people and the territory belongs to Greenland and Denmark.
05:51Those were the words in the statement.
05:53Very clear, but not criticizing the U.S., of course.
05:55Thank you very much indeed for bringing us up to date with the latest on Ukraine.
06:00And, of course, that added bonus, telling us about the take on the situation with Greenland.
06:06And Clovis Cassidy observing all matters for us there at the Elysee Palace.
