Gregor Townsend reveals his Scotland squad for the autumn Test series as he calls up two rookies and gives fitness update on key players
Transcript
00:00I think Liam and Harry are the type of players we believe can thrive at test level.
00:08They bring a physical edge in their performances.
00:12They've improved a lot over the last couple of seasons.
00:16And that's not just seeing them play but hearing what they're doing in training.
00:22Liam really grabbed his opportunity this year and backed up some really good performances with Edinburgh.
00:29And we do see this as an opportunity, probably the last opportunity we'll get over the next two seasons
00:36to have a look at players in the wider squad, players that are coming through really quickly
00:41that we believe will be a big part of our squad in the future.
00:46Regarding Xander and Dori, they're on target to be available for the New Zealand game.
00:52Now we'll see how they are in camp next week.
00:55But they're progressing well.
00:57And we want to be in a place for the New Zealand game that we've got a decision to make.
01:03And they're available for selection.
01:05And we'll see whether they are going to be in the squad.
01:09In terms of the importance of these four games, the world ranking, the draw coming up, the loss to Fiji
01:15obviously means they're playing catch up to get into the top six.
01:19How does that affect the way that these games are approached?
01:23I don't think the ranking is the big concern compared to recent seasons because being in the top 12 is probably important with six pools.
01:39It would be nice to be in the top six and be first seeds in the pool.
01:43But we know now with 16 teams qualifying for the playoffs, the top two go through from each pool.
01:51So yeah, that's really well in the background.
01:55I think the important thing is having these four fixtures and doing all we can to win every game.
02:00They're massive games and particularly the two games against New Zealand and Argentina
02:05who are, as I've showed over the last few years, are two of the best teams in the world.
02:11And the opportunities we have to, and the challenge we have to playing with Baham is one that's in front of our minds.
02:17I think it's intense.
02:18I think it's intense.
