Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho defended her party’s decision to scrap net zero targets, saying Labour’s approach “makes climate change worse”. She argued Ed Miliband’s energy plans would “make electricity even more expensive” by signing up to “the highest offshore wind prices in a decade”, while pledging her own party would “cut bills by 20%”. 00:00At the moment, instead of using North Sea gas, which Ed Miliband is keen to shut down,
00:04we're importing gas, which has four times more emissions.
00:07That makes climate change worse.
00:09Every time a business moves from the UK to a country still powered by coal,
00:13that makes climate change worse.
00:14So what he is doing is saying he's doing all these things in the name of emissions,
00:18but actually it's pulling it in exactly the wrong direction.
00:21And the piece that I have spoken about a lot at the moment is our electricity prices.
00:26If you want to decarbonise in the UK, you have to get people to adopt electric cars and electric home heating.
00:32And what Ed is doing is signing up to the highest offshore wind prices in a decade,
00:36much higher than the current cost of electricity.
00:39And he's going to make electricity even more expensive than it is.
00:42That is the worst thing for any decarbonisation agenda,
00:46which is why we've set out plans to cut electricity bills by 20%.
00:50And like I said, if Ed really cared about bills, he could do that tomorrow.
