00:30There will never be a diva that will surpass Judy Garland, ever.
00:37She was one of the smartest and one of the funniest women I've ever known.
00:40She was a great talent who had struggled all of her life.
00:44She wanted to be a star and she became a star.
00:47It's that simple.
00:49She wanted what she wanted and she got it.
01:00Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
01:22There's a land that I heard of
01:28Once in a lullaby
01:31You know, at an orchestral concert and everyone tunes in on it,
01:38when she starts the first note somewhere over the rainbow,
01:42that sum is like the middle sea for the entire emotional history of show business.
01:49And her voice is it.
01:51You play that one note and nearly everyone in the world could carry on.
01:54Somewhere over the rainbow
02:03The skies are blue
02:09And the dreams that you dare to dream
02:18Really do come true
02:22The Andy Hardy film she made with Rooney built her up as a household idol.
02:42They were an extraordinarily loved teen at that time.
02:46There was clearly a terrific, bubbly, teasing rapport with Rooney.
02:52It's hard to condemn the films just because they're having such a good time together.
02:56What was going on off the camera?
02:58Ask Mr. Rooney.
03:00Well, the chemistry was so strong with Judy and I
03:03that I'd know what she was going to say before she started.
03:07And the same applied for me.
03:09She knew exactly what I was going to say and how I was going to say it.
03:13And, of course, she was magic to work with.
03:21Judy was a big box office draw at Metro Golden America.
03:25The biggest.
03:26I think that there was a lot of pressure on Judy.
03:29Well, it's pressure to be a star in Hollywood in those days.
03:33And it was tough on me and I'm sure that it was tough on her, too.
03:37They put the pressure on everybody all the time.
03:40It's all about, you know, who is the hot one of the moment.
03:43And if you're not, out.
03:46On to the next.
03:47Why, but this place has poisonous rules.
03:50If carried to extremes, it could ruin a man's social life.
03:53In those days, you worked six days a week.
03:57And Mickey Rooney and I, for instance, would work sometimes 72 hours at a time.
04:03And we worked night and day.
04:04The kids would get tired singing and dancing.
04:19By the end of the day, they'd be exhausted.
04:23Metro had a doctor feel good.
04:25And he would give them shots of adrenaline and God knows what all to pep them up so they could work after hours.
04:33And then at the end of the day, they'd be nervous wrecks.
04:36Then it counteract them with some downers.
04:39Good morning, good morning to you.
04:42I think Wizard of Oz has probably been seen by more viewers in theaters, on television.
05:12than any other picture made.
05:13I think it's probably surpassed, it's maybe gone with the wind, the number of people that have seen it.
05:22We were designated to be part of the welcoming committee.
05:25So when she landed into Munchkinland and landed on the Yellow Brick Road,
05:30two of my buddies come out of the crowd.
05:31And we got together and we did, dum-da-da-dum, da-da-dum, da-da-dum.
05:37Then we sang to Julie, we said, we represent the Lollipop Guild.
05:41The Lollipop Guild, the Lollipop Guild.
05:44And in the name of the Lollipop Guild, we wish to welcome you to Munchkinland.
05:54What an adventure.
05:56You are so enthralled by the magic of it.
05:58It's impossible to watch the end of it without crying.
06:02It touches something so profound in us.
06:06It touches the child.
06:08That's what it does.
06:09And we want her to get back.
06:11More than anything else, we want her to survive and get back.
06:16And she does.
06:17There's no place like home.
06:23There's no place like home.
06:26There's no place like home.
06:29There's no place like home.
06:31There's no place like home.

08:25La historia de Philip Larkin
08:27There was a lot of wild, loose sex in Hollywood in those days.
08:30And it was part of the package that you were being paid a fortune.
08:35And we don't have to admire it or like it, but it went on.
08:43Going into L.B.'s office was like walking into the throne of God.
08:48And there he was, beyond that big white desk with buttons.
08:50If he pressed them, all the studio would implode.
08:52Louis B. Mayer was a paragon of virtue in his own mind.
08:59But he also chased young actresses around the desk, around his office.
09:05And Judy was not the least of them.
09:08Because he's the boss, he thinks he could do anything that he wanted to.
09:12That's not nice.
09:14And a lot of men think like that.
09:17They think, well, I'm the big shot. You do what I say.
09:21He would tell her, darling, you sang from the heart.
09:24Then he would clamp his hand on her breast to show her where her heart was.
09:28And this went on for four years.
09:30And finally she got up the courage to say to him,
09:33Mr. Mayer, don't you ever do that again.
09:36If you want to tell me where I sang from, just point.
09:39I always had the impression that Judy thought she was not attractive.
09:53Because she'd always talk about how attractive the other young stars were at Paramount.
09:58She said, gosh, I see Lana on the screen.
10:01And I said, boy, if I could ever look like that.
10:03Louis V. Mayer, highly insensitive man.
10:07She said about him, when he cries, he cries ball bearings.
10:12And he called her his little hunchback.
10:16And oh, God, that's a terrible thing to say to a young girl vying with the likes of Ava Gardner.
10:21And so anyway, there she was, growing up in a world where those were the values.
10:26And women are judged by that.
10:28This was a studio that could claim with justice that they had some of the most beautiful and most talented women in the world.
10:37I think that in their company, Judy felt gauche, awkward, stumbling, not appealing, not sexy, not attractive, not beautiful.
10:46Long, slim legs, and her body pasted on that.
10:49And she wasn't the Hollywood glamour type.
10:53She had those huge, huge, big, soulful brown eyes.
10:58And they always looked troubled and concerned and worried.
11:02And, worst of all, frightened.
11:06She was like the deer caught in the headlights, just held there looking for someone who would, quote, understand her.
11:16We became very good friends.
11:26And I became her sort of big brother, in a way.
11:30But then meanwhile, a tragic thing happened.
11:33I went out, had a date with Lana Turner, and got married.
11:36And Judy had a big breakdown.
11:39I didn't realize that she was kind of had a crush on me, you know.
11:42She was 16, and I was all of 29.
11:45And I said to her one day, what happens?
11:49Well, you know, why don't you come by?
11:51She said, Artie, you know, I like Lana, but it's like sitting in a room with a beautiful vase.
11:57She was right, because Lana was an airhead.
12:00She was a beautiful ornament.
12:01Judy had married David because she wanted to get away from her mother, partly.
12:20She was in love with him, too.
12:22But she also wanted to have children.
12:23And she became pregnant.
12:25No scandal involved.
12:26Proper time had elapsed.
12:28She was a married woman.
12:31But her mother thought it would ruin her career.
12:34And it gives some indication of her relationship, Judy's relationship with her husband, David,
12:39that she had her mother tell David that she was pregnant.
12:43And her mother came back from talking to David and said,
12:46Judy, you can't have this baby.
12:49And Judy said, why not?
12:50It's mine.
12:51I've got to have it.
12:51And her mother very condescendingly said, at the right time, Judy, you can have all the
12:57babies you want, but not now.
13:00David and I have decided.
13:03The very next day, the three of them drove to an abortion clinic outside Los Angeles,
13:09and the pregnancy was terminated.
13:10We'll see you then.
13:28Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer.
13:31Bop, wop, whop went the wheels.
13:35Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings.
13:37Música
14:07No, it's here.
14:37Well, certainly it's dark in here with the lights off.
14:44It certainly is.
14:47It's a measure of the tenderness in Minnelli, I think,
14:50that he saw that Judy became stronger
14:56if she was trying to help a child.
15:00That's a kind of genius to see that.
15:02Have yourself a merry little Christmas
15:08Let your heart be light
15:14Next year all our troubles will be out of sight
15:23Judy is so perfectly placed in the film,
15:28and you'd have to say I think it's because Minnelli understood her so well.
15:33He clearly loved her.
15:35You know, I mean, look at the way she's photographed.
15:37Just ravishing.
15:39I mean, you know, I'm gay and I think she's ravishing.
15:41Stormy weather
15:46Since my man and I ain't together
15:55Keeps raining all the time
16:02Minnelli, he was more messed up psychologically and emotionally than she was.
16:08But she loved him.
16:09He was an older man.
16:10She liked the older man until late in her life
16:13because they offered some stabilizing factor.
16:18Minnelli adored her, but he was homosexual.
16:23And he couldn't, I think, satisfy her.
16:27She was an intensely insecure, needy, sexual person.
16:31All the time
16:35You're dying
16:38Back to the boat!
16:52Back to the boat!
16:52Back to the boat!
16:53Back to the boat!
16:55Back to the boat!
16:56Back to the boat!
16:57Goodbye!
16:58Goodbye!
16:59We've got to be here!
17:00We were there on the set at 6 o'clock in the morning
17:03ready to do the first scene
17:06and Judy Garland, she wasn't ready.
17:10She was in her dressing room trying to get herself together
17:12because she wasn't feeling well
17:14and we're waiting and waiting
17:16and Mr. Minnelli was biting his fingernails
17:19He was a nervous wreck
17:20and then it was like 6 o'clock in the evening
17:25so Mr. Minnelli said, everybody go home.
17:28I'll call you when she's ready.
17:31We were home for three weeks before she got herself together.
17:38She became paranoid
17:47That's a product, by-product of amphetamines
17:50and hallucinated on the set
17:53I'll never forget the time that Dr. Buckley and I
17:55jumped over the fence of her house
17:57and walked in
17:58and the place was just a shambles
18:00and I said to myself, is this my Judy?
18:07And we went into the bedroom and there she was
18:09She was naked
18:10and Dr. Buckley covered her up
18:13and he started looking around the room
18:16for the pills
18:18and sure enough, they were sleeping pills then
18:21Yes, I think by then she was taking a great many pills
18:25She would come in late
18:27and had to be jollied into getting ready
18:30and you couldn't
18:32when you look at that movie
18:33you can't see a single trace
18:36of any difficulty she's having
18:38She's so fantastic
18:39Like the flag
18:41By the Caribbean
18:43By the Caribbean
18:45Or Caribbean Sea
18:50Judy would not hear that Vincent might be gay
19:15and she would say
19:18Oh, it's just his artistic temperament
19:20Well, she discovered the truth
19:23Judy came home unexpectedly from the studio
19:26and walked into her bedroom
19:30and discovered Vincent with a man
19:32She ran down the hallway to her bathroom
19:35broke a glass
19:38cut her wrist
19:39and that, as far as I know
19:42was their first suicide attempt
19:44Hollywood is a terrible tragedy
19:57for a young woman to grow up in
19:58Some people never recover
20:00Most don't recover
20:01I don't know of one single Hollywood star
20:06who became
20:07who got married and stayed married
20:09and had a reasonable life
20:11Forget your troubles
20:14Come on, get happy
20:15You better chase all your cares away
20:18Shout hallelujah
20:19Come on, get happy
20:20Get ready for the judgment day
20:23The sun is shining
20:24Come on, get happy
20:26The Lord is waiting to take your hand
20:29Shout hallelujah
20:30Come on, get happy
20:31We're going to the promised land
20:34We're heading across the river
20:37Wash your sins away in the tide
20:39It's all so peaceful
20:42On the other side
20:45Forget your troubles
20:46Come on, get happy
20:47You better chase all your cares away
20:50Shout hallelujah
20:51Come on, get happy
20:53Get ready for the judgment day
20:55The clown with his pants falling down
21:09Or the dance
21:10That's a dream of romance
21:12Or the scene
21:14Where the villain is me
21:16That's entertainment
21:19It was the most exciting night of theatre
21:23that I can remember
21:27I remember her last number that she sang
21:30was Somewhere Over the Rainbow
21:32Somewhere over the rainbow
21:39They are high
21:43She went down to the footlights
21:44and sang Over the Rainbow and cried
21:46There was a teardrop all over the theatre
21:49Everybody was crying
21:51I was crying too
21:52It was something that was really extraordinary
21:59That audience exploded with something that was beyond audience enthusiasm
22:05They had their arms raised
22:06Tears running down their cheeks
22:08It was like being at a religious revival
22:10That was her appeal
22:11People would say, bless you, Judy
22:13Bless you
22:14And God knows
22:15You get to believe that
22:17You believe that you're some kind of an icon
22:19But I remember one night
22:26She said to me
22:27You saw the show the other night
22:29And you were ecstatic about it
22:32And I said, yeah, I was
22:32But then she said, well, the next time you saw it
22:35You were a little disappointed, weren't you?
22:37I said, well, yeah, I guess I was
22:39Why?
22:40She said, I said
22:41Because you were doing the same thing over and over
22:43And I realized that
22:44What you did was so emotionally communicative
22:49That it pulled me in
22:51Then I realized it was an act
22:53A great thing about my mother was her
22:56She was so intelligent
22:57And terribly sensitive to other people's thoughts
23:01And to other people's feelings
23:05About what they needed from her
23:06And one time I said
23:08She was laughing at something
23:11I said, why do so many people think you're unhappy, Mama?
23:14And she said, because they need to
23:16She knew exactly what she was doing
23:18You know, one thing you've got to remember
23:20Which is a tiresome word
23:21Because it's used so glibly now
23:23But Judy was a genius
23:25And, you know, I can't remember who said it
23:30But the thin paper between genius and madness
23:34Is really as thin as cigarette paper
23:36There was a little spot of trouble
23:46Just in front of the stage
23:47But it could be a dangerous situation
23:50A policeman ran across the stage
23:52And calmed everybody down
23:53Nobody even noticed it
23:55She gets back to the dressing room
23:57Judy is screaming
23:59I want that fucker fired, she says
24:02I want him out of here
24:03I never want to see his ugly face again
24:05It's that cop who ran across the stage
24:08He got between me and my audience
24:12And she's incensed and inconsolable
24:15Everybody had to love Judy
24:19And if there was one person
24:21Who got in the way of everybody loving Judy
24:24The whole effect was spoiled
24:26Cause it's so loud
24:29All alone
24:31By myself
24:34From now
24:39Working with Judy Brown was a little like life on a roller coaster
24:47The downside was that she was inexhaustible
24:51She demanded a lot
24:53This woman was never allowed a childhood
24:55This woman would stand in front of an audience of 20, 30, 40, 50,000 people
25:00They had a full evening of enjoyment
25:02And they then went home
25:04And they left this little woman
25:06And they were through
25:08Their evening was over
25:09But she was still up there somewhere
25:11And that's why she got so lonely
25:13And so frightened in the middle of the night
25:14Cause she suddenly was alone
25:16We went to the Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel in New York City
25:30And have a nightcap
25:32And it was a very conservative group of people all around us
25:36We were at a table in the center of the room
25:38And she said to me
25:39Are you Tony Bennett?
25:42I said yes
25:43She said
25:44Am I Judy Garland?
25:47I said yes
25:48She said
25:49No one is paying attention to us
25:52I said you know you're right
25:54I said this is a very cold room
25:56All of a sudden this woman came in
25:59Who was the lead opera singer from the Metropolitan Opera
26:03This big heavy woman
26:04A Wagnerian singer
26:06You know
26:06Big bosoms
26:07And hundreds of pounds on her
26:09And everybody stood up
26:13And gave her a standing ovation
26:14And Judy fell right off the chair
26:17On the floor
26:18Just piling the floor
26:19She couldn't believe it
26:20One night I took her to see Tony Bennett at the Coconut Grove
26:33Tony Bennett came on
26:35And we had wine of course
26:37With our food
26:38And by two thirds of the way through Tony's act
26:42She was fast asleep
26:43With her face down
26:44And at the end of his act
26:46Tony Bennett as always closed with
26:49And I left my heart in San Francisco
26:50He leaned forward and put the microphone
26:53Under Judy's face
26:54Now from a deep sleep
26:56I put one leg up on the chair
26:58She got her second leg up on the chair
27:00Stood on the table
27:01And brought the house down
27:03Tore the roof off the building
27:05When I come home to you San Francisco
27:07I mean it was just
27:08That break in the voice
27:10Everything
27:10Nothing he had done in an hour and a half
27:12Came close to what she did in 16 drunken bars
27:15Bless her heart
27:17That's what she was
27:19It's just magical
27:20Just once in a lifetime
27:24There's one special moment
27:30One wonderful moment
27:35She was a funny lady
27:38Great sense of humor
27:39She was born with a gift of laughter
27:42And the whole world is mad
27:45And I think that was her credo like mine
27:47Yeah I think I fell in love with her
27:50Almost immediately
27:52As I recall
27:54Yeah
27:55I knew it was not going to be easy
27:58As a matter of fact
27:59I remember talking to Freddie
28:00And I said
28:01You know Freddie
28:02I'm really stuck on this girl
28:03I said
28:04It looks like we're serious
28:06He says
28:07Serious?
28:08He says
28:09Nobody marries Dorothy
28:10There's one special moment
28:17The only man who could handle her
28:20Was Sid Luft
28:23But by the time Judy got to him
28:25She was already an alcoholic
28:27And addicted to drugs
28:29Now that he couldn't handle
28:32I did not get along well with Sid Luft
28:34We met
28:35And he said
28:36Don't worry about a thing
28:37Pal
28:38I'll be there
28:39I'll be in there
28:40I'm going to help you
28:40And I'm going to
28:41You know
28:41I'll talk to Jude's for you
28:43I said
28:44I'll tell you what
28:44Pal
28:44You're her husband
28:45And I'm her producer
28:46I will never come to your house
28:49Don't come into my studio
28:51And that was our first meeting
28:53And Judy laughed
28:56And she said
28:57Perfect!
28:59You want to have bells that'll ring
29:01You want to have songs that'll sing
29:03You want your sky a baby blue
29:06You gotta have me go with you
29:08Hey you fooled you
29:11Why so cool you
29:13When I'm ready
29:15It was a very important film for her
29:17You don't see it on the screen
29:19You don't see the apprehension she had
29:20But she was under a bit of a strain in that
29:25Knowing how important this picture would be
29:27The night is bitter
29:29The stars have lost their glitter
29:32The winds grow colder
29:36Suddenly you're older
29:39And all because of the man
29:44That got away
29:46She gives a wonderful performance
29:52But a performance that's
29:53In a way rather frightening
29:56Because you see her almost on the brink of destruction
29:59You know
30:00I mean
30:00She's very close to the edge in that film
30:02And you can feed it
30:03You can feel that something's got to give
30:05And her life and career did
30:07Eventually
30:08I hate me
30:09Because I've failed to
30:13I have
30:15I don't know
30:19What's going to happen to us
30:21No matter
30:24How much you love somebody
30:29How do you live out the days
30:33The biggest premiere in Hollywood history
30:38For Warner Brothers' A Star Is Born
30:40Brings out hundreds of film notable
30:42And here's the star of A Star Is Born
30:44Judy Garland
30:45A Star Is Born, you know
30:47Was going to be the moment in her life
30:50The great peak
30:53Having climbed Mount Everest
30:56And gotten to the top at last
31:03She was nominated
31:09And she did not win
31:12And that
31:13Did her in
31:15I think it was the beginning of her downfall
31:19And the beginning of the disintegration of her marriage
31:22And a lot of things
31:23Because she
31:23She was crushed by it
31:26Because once you have geared yourself
31:29For something like that to happen
31:31That way
31:32And it's that big
31:34And then
31:35It doesn't happen
31:37It's horrible
31:38I forget the name of the critic
31:40But his column was
31:43He loved the picture originally
31:46But his column was
31:48A Star Is Shorn
31:50And he was furious
31:52And he wrote a column about cutting the movie
31:55And from that review alone
31:58The grosses of the picture fell off terribly
32:01And instead of being a successful movie
32:05It was not successful at the box office
32:08It was a flop
32:09The film was cut shortly after it had opened
32:13And that's why it was for a long time very difficult to get the full version
32:18We still don't have the full version
32:20But there is a restored version
32:22And it is a famous disaster
32:26And of course it was effectively
32:28The end of Judy Garland's movie career
32:32She made some films later
32:34But they were of a quite different kind
32:36I could go on singing
32:40Till the cars come home
32:46One of the most memorable things about that film
32:50Was there is a scene
32:52Which I believe was scripted
32:54But somehow went slightly into ad lib
32:57Between her and Dirk Bogard
32:58In which she talks about her fears for herself and the future
33:05And it is terrifying
33:08Because she is almost predicting
33:11The last decade of her life
33:13In that scene
33:14I sing for myself
33:16I sing when I want to
33:17Whenever I want to
33:18Just for me
33:19I sing for my own pleasure
33:20Whenever I want
33:21Do you understand that?
33:22Yes, I do understand that
33:23Just hang on to that, will you?
33:24Hang on to it
33:24Well, I've hung on
33:25To every bit of rubbish
33:27There is to hang on to in life
33:28And I've thrown all the good bits away
33:31Now, can you tell me why I do that?
33:33No, no, I can't tell you why you do that
33:34But I can tell you this
33:35You are going to be late
33:36I don't care
33:38That is the actual woman saying the actual truth
33:42Acting it brilliantly
33:45And being it
33:47Which is a very different thing
33:48But she was also capable of being one of the
33:51I think one of the most profound actresses
33:54That we have
33:55Or we have
33:55She knew exactly it was a playing scene
33:58But it was her
33:59And it was about her
34:01Just in time
34:04I found you
34:07Just in time
34:09Before you came
34:13My time
34:14Was running low
34:19She looked up as I came in
34:23And I felt very young
34:25And very inexperienced
34:27And in total awe of her in a way
34:29Freddie said
34:30This is Norman Jewison
34:31She looked at me
34:31And she said
34:32Oh God
34:33I really want to talk to you
34:34But if you'll just forgive me
34:36I just have to make one phone call
34:38And she called
34:40The White House
34:41All of a sudden
34:42She had
34:43President Kennedy on the phone
34:45She said
34:46This is Judy Garland calling
34:47And she said
34:48Mr. President
34:49I just wanted to wish you
34:50A happy birthday
34:51And she
34:52Said
34:53Somewhere
34:53Over the rainbow
34:56Body
34:57She sang
34:59Eight bars of
35:00Over the rainbow
35:01To the President
35:02Kennedy
35:02And
35:03And then she said
35:04Happy birthday
35:05Mr. President
35:06Hung up
35:06And she turned
35:07And she said
35:07Now
35:08About that special
35:09You know what we mean
35:13Let there be bluebirds
35:17A lark and a duck
35:20But first of all
35:23Please, please, please, please
35:25Let there be lark
35:27Taking up speed
35:31Taking up a little speed
35:32They had a circular railroad track
35:35And they had two boys
35:36On one of these cars
35:38That do this
35:38I wish I knew the name of that
35:39But I don't
35:40Judy and I were sitting on it
35:42They would take us around
35:43While we were singing
35:44They were so nervous
35:45At rehearsal
35:46They started going faster
35:47And faster
35:48And
35:49It
35:49It slipped off the tracks
35:51And went right into the audience
35:53There was no one
35:53Nobody in the audience
35:54It was just
35:55Metal chairs
35:56You know
35:56And all of a sudden
35:57We just
35:58And we crashed into
36:01About 50 chairs
36:02And we just sat there
36:03Laughing
36:04Historically
36:05I'm going to
36:05Kansas City
36:07Kansas City
36:09Here I come
36:10They got some crazy little woman there
36:15And I'm gonna get me some
36:17The first time Judy ever got upset on stage
36:20We were at CBS
36:22And she started complaining about the lights
36:24Or something
36:24Because this energy just built up in her
36:26And so I didn't know what to do at that point
36:29Because I
36:29I was somewhat nervous
36:32And so I started to sing
36:34Over the rainbow
36:34And she turned like an animal
36:38And said
36:39What are you doing?
36:40And I said
36:40I just thought if you were gonna produce
36:42I'd sing
36:42And boy was she mad
36:45She stormed off
36:46And she went in this
36:47Candy striped trailer
36:49That we'd put on the side of CBS
36:50And this is her dressing room
36:51And so I thought maybe I'd gone a little far
36:54So I got in there
36:55And I got on a coffee table
36:56And I held a match under the sprinklers
36:58And she said
36:59What are you doing?
36:59You fool
37:00And I said
37:00If you don't apologize to me
37:01I'm gonna drown you
37:02She said
37:03I apologize to you?
37:04You fool
37:04I said
37:05I'm gonna drown you
37:06She said
37:06No, no
37:07Get down from there
37:07So I got down
37:08And I said
37:08We'll see that it doesn't happen again
37:10And she chased me down the hall
37:12She pulled a lamp out of the wall
37:14Chased me down the hall
37:15It was gonna hit me with a lamp
37:17And we just both sat down in the middle of the hall
37:19And just laughed hysterically
37:20And she was back on stage
37:21The whole thing took maybe about two minutes
37:23And they could not believe
37:24They thought
37:25Well, there goes the shoot
37:26It was just playing
37:28It was just breaking that
37:29White, hot, coiled steel
37:32That built up in her stomach
37:33Once
37:34Just one laugh
37:35One laugh would do it
37:36And she loved to laugh
37:38I love body jokes
37:44Any joke that dealt with even mild flatulation
37:50Put Judy under the table
37:52It was a joyous time for me
37:56Right up until I was fired
37:58Dear, when you smile at me
38:05I heard a melody
38:07It haunted me
38:09From the start
38:11Something inside of me
38:16Started a symphony
38:18Sing with the strings of my heart
38:23We did five shows in six weeks
38:25On budget, on time, on schedule
38:27And never did a retake
38:28And she was a live performer
38:30What happened was
38:32When CBS said
38:34They wanted to fix it
38:35They wanted to make her the girl next door
38:37Because they were not in show business
38:38They were in advertising
38:39And so when they began to pick at her
38:42And say, no
38:42Judy, do this
38:43Don't touch people so much
38:45Don't
38:45Don't get so frantic
38:48And so
38:48Then she became nervous
38:50Then they
38:51One day
38:51The thing that fell apart
38:52Was when they came in
38:53And they said
38:54Judy, we know what we have to do
38:55To fix the show
38:55And here's a woman
38:57And here's a woman
38:57Who had seen audiences
38:59And they'd run the show
39:00And she'd seen the reaction
39:01And she started this movement
39:04I wasn't aware the show needed fixing
39:07And you just saw
39:08This wonderful, playful little nymphette
39:12Starting to become the animal
39:13We'd heard of
39:14And she then could grind you out pretty good
39:17The network canceled the shows
39:18Through bad reviews and bad ratings
39:21Now they're masterpieces
39:24Now anytime anybody looks at them
39:26They realize
39:26God, what did we do?
39:28You know, they were great
39:29I must tell you though
39:30I was dead against it
39:32I didn't think that Judy
39:34Should be on television
39:36Once a week
39:37I thought maybe a few specials a year
39:41But not a series
39:43It led to her downfall
39:46In my opinion
39:47And at the end of that series
39:49She was broke
39:52It's a very seductive life
40:09People throw things at you
40:10You know
40:11And you get the idea
40:12That you're something very special
40:13And the fact is
40:14You really are
40:15But not for any reasons
40:17That make any great sense
40:18It wasn't very easy for her
40:20I think she coped with it marvelously
40:22But inherently
40:23Basically Judy
40:24Was the mess
40:25And that's all I can say
40:27Loving her
40:28That she was
40:29But not because of the situation
40:32I know other people
40:33Who had just as much put out with
40:35From Hollywood
40:36Who didn't become
40:37Quite such a mess
40:38She didn't know how many millions of dollars
40:40Judy Garland made for different studios
40:42Record companies
40:43Composers
40:44Publishing houses
40:46She didn't have any of it
40:48She said
40:48You know
40:49No one's ever given me money
40:50Ever
40:51You know
40:51I've never seen money in my hand
40:53Ever
40:54So I went to the promoter
40:56And I said
40:57Do you want to knock Judy Garland out?
41:00I said
41:00Give her some cash tonight
41:01Instead of a check
41:03So he gave her
41:04Five thousand dollars in cash
41:06And I went to her dressing room
41:09And she was jumping up and down
41:10Throwing the money up in the air
41:12They're writing songs of love
41:28But not for me
41:32The lucky stars above
41:36But not for me
41:39With love to leave
41:43If you hadn't been an actress
41:44What do you think you might have wanted to be?
41:47Happily married
41:48Do you think it's possible to be an actress
41:51And be happily married?
41:53Well, I don't think anybody who married me thought so
41:56But I think it's possible
41:58Well, they know that I'm Judy Garland
42:01When they start to go with me
42:02And then the minute they
42:03Sort of get tangled with me
42:07They say
42:08You know how difficult it is to be
42:11Well, why didn't they think of that
42:13Before they, you know
42:14Took me out the first time?
42:16Though I can't dismiss
42:18The memory
42:21Of his kiss
42:24I got a call from Judy
42:27And she said
42:28I'm at the St. Regis Hotel
42:30And I'm being beaten up right now
42:33I said, oh my God
42:35I said, I'm on stage
42:36So my ex-wife said
42:39Call Frank
42:40He was down in Florida
42:42I told him the situation
42:44I said, I'm going right on stage
42:45It's my opening night
42:46I said, Judy Garland's in trouble
42:48At the St. Regis
42:49He says, I'll call you back
42:51In 15 minutes
42:52And in 12 minutes
42:53Judy Garland called me back up
42:54And she said
42:56I have about 500 policemen
42:59Outside the hotel
43:00And five Jewish lawyers
43:02In my suite
43:03She says, I've asked for help
43:05But this is ridiculous
43:06And he called me back up
43:08Sinatra called me back up
43:09In 15 minutes
43:10And he said
43:12Is that all right, kid?
43:15Judy's life was
43:16So demanding
43:18So insistent
43:19There was telephone calls
43:21At 3 in the morning
43:22At 4 in the morning
43:22At 5 in the morning
43:23Cables, letters
43:25Intensive, intensive
43:27I, I, I
43:28Suddenly destroyed
43:30Your whole existence
43:31Because Judy didn't believe
43:33That anybody else
43:33Had a life of their own to live
43:35Certainly without her
43:37And therefore
43:38If you had a film to do
43:39Or a book to write
43:40Or a composing
43:42Or whatever you were doing
43:43Didn't matter to Judy
43:45As long as you were on tap
43:46Night and day
43:46We couldn't
43:47We couldn't
43:47In the end
43:48I think I speak for a lot
43:49Of her friends
43:49Not all
43:50But we couldn't
43:50Take the stress of it
43:52We had to get on
43:54And live our own lives
43:56When someone is
43:57Going down that
43:58Steep incline
43:59She loses
44:03They lose people
44:04Along the way
44:05I don't think
44:06That necessarily
44:07They, they're lost
44:09In their hearts
44:10It's just that
44:12That
44:13Sometimes it's easier
44:15Not to
44:15Not to have to deal
44:16With something like that
44:17We had to go
44:18And she lost us
44:20And we did
44:21Turn our backs
44:21And we did
44:22Yes, we did walk away
44:25She said that
44:27Everybody
44:28I remember her once
44:28Saying to me
44:29Years before I thought
44:30It would ever happen to me
44:30She'd one day
44:32Gosh, yes, I do remember
44:34She'd one day
44:35You'll walk away from me
44:37And you'll have your back to me
44:38You won't walk away
44:40Facing me
44:41Nobody ever does
44:42She had a date with death
44:44I mean, that sounds
44:45Melodramatic and cruel
44:46And crude
44:47But I really
44:47I think that was it
44:49And what
44:49She was 47 when she died
44:51Well, I think if you'd been there
44:53All the way
44:54You'd have said
44:54God, how did she last that long
44:56You know
44:57Yeah, I think that
44:58The things that were best for her
45:02She could not abide
45:04She needed to destroy them
45:05And that sounds impossible
45:07And it is until you meet
45:11A real self-destructive personality
45:13And I think that's what she was
45:15My dear
45:18My high notes won't come out tonight
45:21All right
45:24In a couple of minutes, really
45:27She went out
45:29She started
45:30Kind of satirizing
45:33Her singing
45:33And then she made
45:35A couple of lewd remarks
45:37In the middle of the song
45:38And a lot of people
45:39Started walking out
45:42And her famous clack fans
45:46Came to the foots of the stage
45:48And said
45:49No, no, Judy
45:49No, no
45:50And funny enough
45:52And I have to get
45:54A little emotional about this
45:55When I even speak about it
45:56She came down
45:58And kind of crashed down
46:00On the floor
46:01And started singing
46:03Somewhere Over the Rainbow
46:04And she sang it to perfection
46:06And had the people
46:09Just wrecked with emotion
46:11Some were, you know
46:14So disenchanted
46:16Others realized
46:18How great it was
46:19And it was after that
46:21That I think about
46:24Six weeks later
46:25You know
46:25She
46:26She died
46:27It's funny
46:43I'm just realizing this
46:45At this very moment
46:46But
46:47There are certain people
46:53When they leave
46:55Your life changes
46:56And it would definitely
46:59Happen with her
47:00I'll never have
47:02That much fun again
47:15Embrace me
47:20Embrace me
47:20My sweet
47:22Embraceable you
47:25Embrace me
47:29You irreplaceable you
47:34Don't be a naughty baby
47:40Come to Papa
47:42Come to Papa
47:42Come to Papa
47:44Do
47:45My sweet
47:49Embraceable you
47:55Come to Papa
47:57A gegeben a назвans
47:59That much fun
48:07It would definitely be a
48:08rien as she
48:09I am
48:09I am
48:10I am
48:11I am
48:12I am
48:12You are
48:13I am
48:14I am
48:14You are
48:15I am
48:16You are
