00:00When it comes to Manchester and food there are a lot of different ways that you could go about it.
00:03Manchester tart has the city in the name. Things like black pudding and rag pudding are really
00:08important to places on the outskirts like Bury and Oldham. One food in the north that'll never
00:12go out of date is pies. Now I've been to my fair share of football matches both in the north and
00:17in the south and one thing that I can tell you is that in the north you'll be offered a pie.
00:21In the south it's more likely to be a pasty or something else equally rubbish. Here in the north
00:26we take our pastry seriously and in Manchester we've got lots of great people doing wonderful
00:31things with meat, veg and pastry. Now I'm going to go to one of the best which is the Great North
00:36Pie Co. Co of course means company and let me tell you the branch here they are in great company
00:42being based here at campus. There's an Elle's Pizza, a Yum Cha and we're in the middle of the
00:47gay village too. So let's get down to the store and give it a try. So I'm at the Great North Pie
00:52Co now and look at the menu. It's very very small and the reason for that is they want to do not
00:58very much but very very well. I'm going to get their 14-hour braised beef and ale pie which has
01:04Manchester Union Lager which is just another way that they're tying themselves in with the local
01:08community. Now the importance of locality to the owners Neil and Sarah Broomfield cannot be
01:14overstated. They set up this business at their home in Cheshire a couple of years back before
01:19setting up a proper stall in Altrincham market and since then they've gone strength to strength.
01:23This really is their big step into the restaurant world. Usually I'm not a pea guy which is I know
01:31a bit of an insult in the north but these peas look crazy good so I'm going to give those a try.
01:36Chips, some amazing thick gravy and the pie and mash looks spectacular. So let's tuck in.
01:43Oh my mum's going to be so proud of me.
01:51There's really nice flavour in there and you get a nice contrast of sort of
01:55full peas and mushy peas as well so there's a nice contrast of textures.
01:59When you get to the pie that ethos of not trying to be the biggest but trying to be the best
02:03at what they do really really comes across. A small menu with a small range of pies but
02:07each of them brilliant. Just have a look at this. Let's try the pie.
02:14The meat is so flavourful, so tender, so soft. Pastry is flaky and it's this perfect little
02:21platform that the meat can just dance on top of. I'm gonna have to stop filming guys and I'm gonna
02:27enjoy this but I'll get to you at the end. Now while I wolf my way through this amazing meal
02:32just a little bit on their company themselves. As I say they started as an independent business,
02:36did really really well in a bunch of pie competitions and now they're here. It's an
02:40amazing testament to what can be done with passion, desire and really good produce.
02:46That's me done, very full and I've not even finished my chips. I'm not sure I'll need to
02:52eat again today but what a remarkable meal, what a remarkable company.
02:56So thank you to the Great North Pie Co and thank you for watching Manchester World.
