00:00 Researchers from University College London are calling on the government to up their
00:05 game when it comes to anti-smoking efforts. This is because recent data suggests that
00:11 the decline in smokers seen in England over the past few years has slowed, with some believing
00:16 this is due to younger age groups taking up the habit.
00:21 A few different contributing factors to the problem have been suggested, including loneliness
00:27 and poor mental health which were exacerbated by the pandemic. There are also concerns that
00:33 some of the negative rhetoric around vaping has turned people away from e-cigarettes and
00:38 onto tobacco products.
00:41 Previously the government had set a target for England to be smoke-free by 2030, with
00:47 additional funding being provided to stop smoking services. Wales also hopes to be smoke-free
00:53 by 2030, with Scotland hoping to follow suit by 2034.
