SNP candidate Katie Loudon on polling day for Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election

The Scotsman speak to SNP candidate Katie Loudon on polling day for Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election.  Voters are going to the polls in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election.  The seat was vacated after former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier was ousted in a recall petition.  Ms Ferrier was kicked out of the SNP for breaching Covid regulations by travelling between London and Glasgow after testing positive for the virus.  SNP candidate Katy Loudon goes up against Labour’s Michael Shanks in what is thought to be a two horse race.

00:25 We're outside St Charles Primary in Newton Farm today at one of the polling stations.

00:30 I'm here today to remind people that if they are coming along, please make sure you bring

00:34 your voter ID with you, photographic ID, and the polls are open to 10 o'clock today as

00:40 I'm looking forward to tonight, it's going to be good fun.

00:41 I love an election count.

00:43 I've been getting lots of messages, people telling me to rest.

00:46 People were messaging me at midnight last night saying get some sleep.

00:49 I said well maybe if you'd stop messaging me, I could.

00:52 But it's been a busy day, it's been a lot of fun.

00:55 We're going to be out campaigning all day here.

00:58 We've got a lot of teams out at the moment and I'm out myself.

01:00 It's good fun.

01:01 We'll be campaigning right up to 10 o'clock, absolutely, because it's so important to make

01:06 sure that people are getting the message to come out, making sure they've got their voter

01:11 ID, they're being reminded.

01:12 So we'll be doing that as much as we can today.

01:14 It's going to be about turnout.

01:16 It's obviously not a particularly nice day today, so we're making sure that people know

01:20 to come along.

01:21 The First Minister has been fantastic all the way through this campaign.

01:24 He's been very, very supportive.

01:26 He's given us a lot of help.

01:28 He's been out sharpening the doors.

01:29 I was out with him just a couple of days ago, so it's really great that he's going to be

01:32 here again this afternoon.

01:33 I'm feeling positive.

01:34 As I say, it's a wee bit rainy and I'm a wee bit tired, but in terms of the reception we're

01:40 getting when we're out speaking to people today, it's great.

01:43 Votes holding up.

01:44 At the end of the day, I'm confident that I'm the best candidate for this job.

01:48 I'm the only candidate that's offering the real cost of living support that people need

01:52 just now, and we know that's what's important to people.
