The ancient ‘Major Oak’ tree in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire has died, after its first spring with no leaves. The tree is thought to be up to 1,200 years old, and according to legend it sheltered the outlaw Robin Hood, but has been in decline for some years. The RSPB, which manages the woodland, attributes this to factors including huge numbers of visitors treading on the ground around the tree, and recent heatwaves and droughts. #majoroak #sherwoodforest
