00:02I will read a statement, but I will not take any questions.
00:10It's just the statement in itself that has value.
00:15I warmly congratulate Navi Pillai on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
00:22For decades, she has been a champion of international law and human rights
00:26and a steadfast, independent voice of justice amid some of the most historic international legal cases of our time.
00:34From her work in South Africa, defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against the oppressive apartheid regime,
00:41to a role as an international judge and president at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda
00:46on cases relating to international crimes, including the genocide in Rwanda,
00:52to a tenure as United Nations I Commissioner on Human Rights,
00:56and to chairing the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
01:02She has shown that the force of law must prevail over the law of force
01:07and that defending human rights is the surest safeguard against injustice.
01:12In its citation, the Nobel Committee reminded the world that peace must be built on lasting principles,
01:18not the will of the powerful.
01:20Today's prize is a tribute to all those working to uphold and defend international law,
01:26the rule of law and human rights, and secure peace, justice and human dignity.
