It’s never too late to change your mind. There could be a church full of people waiting to hear you say, “I do,” but if you decide it’s a bad situation, you can totally bail. That’s the message of Ashe’s “Stop the Wedding,” the lead single off her forthcoming fourth studio album, The Girl Of Your Dreams. In this episode of Verified, Ashe reflects on the real-life inspiration for the lyrics and reveals which TikTok videos built around this song hit the hardest.

00:00We fall into the trap of believing we're trapped.
00:03You at any moment of your life get to change your mind.
00:07I heard Oprah saying, even if the people are in the church, even if they're waiting for
00:12you to walk down the aisle, you can change your mind.
00:22This song takes you on an insane rollercoaster, and I just thought if we can pull this off
00:29and people like it, this puts me in my own sort of singular category.
00:50I journal a lot, and I thought how cool it would have been if one of my notes from my
00:58future self found me on that day of my first wedding.
01:02I just started to paint this picture of me.
01:05I remember the room I was getting ready in and feeling like I should not go through with this.
01:11And what if I actually did get a secret note for myself?
01:16Would I have changed things?
01:18Would I have not gone through with it?
01:19And I love the, it feels so sinister.
01:22He thinks he's velvet smooth, a fallin' for the act.
01:26I'm in the other room and seein' through the cracks, the voices in my head.
01:31I screamin' no, don't.
01:38This is definitely an unraveling of the illusion of this perfect guy.
01:43There's that saying of when people show you who they are, believe them.
01:48And I was not believing what was in front of my eyes.
01:53There were these little cracks and things and all these red flags that I was choosing to ignore.
01:58I wish I would have had a wake-up call sooner.
02:02You don't have to waste your night and wear your heart out.
02:08The warning signs are flashin' now.
02:11Stop the wedding, ooh, stop the wedding.
02:18Even though the table's set, the guests are waiting.
02:22You can burn the dress and run away.
02:26Stop the wedding, ooh, stop the wedding.
02:33I think the TikToks that have sort of hit the hardest are the ones about, I wish my mom had
02:40this song.
02:41That's been really brutal, cause same.
02:44This sort of realization of, gosh, like even if you love your dad, but don't love him as a husband.
02:51Ugh, that just, that's really wrecked me.
02:54Because it gave the song a completely new life.
02:59You've been such a good girl.
03:03Talking like you should girl.
03:07Keep avoiding disappointing in your white satin heels.
03:11But you know how you really feel.
03:14I'm such a people pleaser, always.
03:16I like to think that I've outgrown it.
03:18I totally have not.
03:19I really needed someone to tell me, it's okay to leave.
03:23Even if he wasn't the villain in my story.
03:26Which by the way, he is.
03:28I think the advice I would give is, you don't need an excuse.
03:32If it's not right, and you know it's not right, you don't have to form yourself to anybody else, ever.
03:40And you have every right to say, this isn't for me.
03:45And I'm gonna, I'm gonna go.
03:49Stop the wedding, stop the wedding.
03:54If your heart is dreading, hands are sweating.
03:58While the sun is setting, you'll be getting out.
04:04The bridge is where the whole scene starts changing.
04:09Like, with the sun setting, I'm picturing the curtains changing on stage.
04:15And this feeling of, it's now or never.
04:18I feel like the character in this story is, I'm gonna stay and be in this thing that I know
04:26is wrong.
04:27Or I'm gonna run.
04:28And so, I love that it repeats.
04:31Because there's this building herself up.
04:34Like getting the bravery to do it.
04:36And then the waste your life.
04:39And I'm just picturing her running through the doors.
04:43And that is definitely my favorite part.
05:06If my heart was set, I'll never break.
05:09And you can burn the dress and run away.
05:12Stop the wedding, ah.
05:16Stop the wedding, ah.
05:19The real reason why I changed those lyrics at the end was we always try to protect ourselves.
05:29And choose the safe route.
05:32Trying to escape the idea of breaking your heart.
05:36But the actuality is, if you wanna live a life worth living, you're gonna have to take the risk.
05:43It is worth setting the bomb on your life.
05:46It will be better.
05:47It gets better.
05:49But you're probably gonna have to break your heart in the process to get there.
05:54Shout out my manager, who called off her engagement.
05:58Not recently.
05:59The wedding was planned?
06:01Yeah.
06:01Stopped the wedding a month before.
06:04That's so crazy.
06:05I forget that.
06:06Of the wedding spirit.
06:06Yeah, you're gonna have to tryj Mistake in that.
06:06The wedding coming back and travel,
