00:00how are you i'm all right yeah i'm all right yep uh i was uh you know listening to dan
00:06campbell
00:06driving in and uh i like that he was fired up yeah there's some significant stuff set in there
00:12and we of course as we always do pulled a few cuts and uh we'll go over it uh today
00:18at 11 30
00:18he is fired up so i'm kind of fired up i like i look i like coaches when things aren't
00:24going right
00:24that they speak with a conviction uh and and a convincing one then you can understand why he's
00:30a head coach um and as aiden said to us yesterday and hutchinson who i thought was really good
00:35yesterday said over and over again look guys these are just words we have to do it but and then
00:40he'd
00:40speak to his conviction to do everything he could on his behalf um and we'll talk with golf uh today
00:48at 10 30 jared golf of course uh for our weekly conversation you know i mean we've got we've
00:54we've got some teams in crisis mode here and um you know who's gonna work it out you know the
01:02maybe nobody maybe everybody but you know i want i want the people in leadership positions to speak
01:09with a conviction that they they can fix it uh and a convincing one and you know sometimes you don't
01:14believe people and sometimes you do and uh we'll see how it plays itself out but um yeah yeah that
01:21was
01:21such a bad weekend i feel like that weekend left left scars i hope we can recover as a sports
01:28community it's just awful absolutely awful and we spent most of yesterday talking about what was the
01:37hot story it was the lions and michigan and michigan state a are are problematic too um and in the
01:44world
01:44of college football has changed a lot right i mean there's there's a very real thing called the
01:49signetti effect kurt signetti uh turned around indiana immediately and he did sort of a college
01:59football version of the russian five in that he raided the sunbelt which doesn't sound like it would
02:04be that lucrative but there were good players in that league and he took his from james madison and
02:09a couple others from other sunbelt schools that had developed and had you know turned themselves into
02:14pretty good college football players and he's he did something that really nobody else had done
02:21and kind of like when the red wings started raiding russia and europe and we're you know with the four
02:27of that and uh really really scored big signetti did it with taking players from a you know it wasn't
02:35it's a lower d1 but it worked and and so it's created that in the playoff i thought this was
02:41really
02:42interesting for michigan and michigan state fans who are who are mad um rest assured you have
02:47company chris vanini senior writer from the athletics said sunday thoughts this is on twitter
02:52it feels like half of college football is having an existential crisis so many people want to fire
02:57their coach even some with good records and some with a new coach feels like we're in an unhealthy
03:03cycle in a weird place almost nobody can sustain anything dan wolken a college football writer for yahoo
03:09said nil equals parody parody equals inconsistency inconsistency equals losses losses equal unhappiness
03:15unhappiness unhappiness equals fire everyone it's probably not a reasonable take in ann arbor and
03:23east lansing at this point given it's year one of coaches but these two coaches i mean whittingham
03:27and fitzgerald have their hands for whittingham it's it's a little bit feels like they've they've
03:33maybe miscalculated what they can do offensively and with fitzgerald it's just a it's a long way to go
03:38talent wise well it is and you know with michigan state what's frustrating for me as a spartan is
03:45each week you're you're seeing somebody else star for another team or make a play for another team
03:49and you'll hear the michigan state transfer and it's like if michigan state were only able to hang
03:55on to their own players and i'm sure plenty of schools do this right with michigan state it just
04:00seems uncanny that every week i'm seeing other players on the field that have michigan state ties
04:05and here it is are going to go face their their former quarterback on saturday which doesn't bother
04:09me terribly but it's just it's just another one of these these players but watching nick marsh make
04:14plays for indiana hurts and stinks and we were watching you know keon coleman do it after he left and
04:19jeremy bernard do it with after he left and these are you know two high draft picks and all this
04:24and
04:24you know it's it's tough but it's it's it's the world we live in and for michigan state trying
04:31to navigate through that with it with a coaching change and um yeah the signetti effect is real
04:37uh he changed it right away and you'd like to see it or believe that any school can do it
04:44but
04:45they're not doing it like he did it you know he he got all the players from his school and
04:51around as
04:51you said so there's familiarity with it i think with other coaches coming in there's a different
04:57approach you're trying to do a scatter shot from anywhere in the country to do it and they're
05:02finding out they're not having that same success other schools will do it if they can have the
05:06coach and you get the bump from the coach bringing in his own players i mean you can argue michigan's
05:10best players right now are the coaches that that whittingham brought with them one on offense
05:15yeah uh that that's how that's worked out for him but i mean you look at a school like
05:19northwestern and how they've turned things around their coach is above 500 since he took over for
05:25for uh fitzgerald and it's not like they have a who's who of players there it's northwestern but
05:32they played indiana real tough they've got a couple of wins now convincing win over over penn state
05:37i mean so it can happen and it's so i i get why there's frustration all over the board
05:44yeah and in the case of michigan it sounds like kyle whittingham has made more of a okay we got
05:50to go back to more of a downhill rushing attack they came in they've tried to run the offense that
05:54they ran at utah this is my perspective to be honest i haven't talked to anybody and it about
05:59it yet um i'll be in the building this week but and they're making more okay what we're trying to
06:06do
06:06isn't working and whether or not it's it's you know too late i guess we'll find out it's a good
06:10week
06:10to make some changes because it's a bye week and you got extra time to work on stuff but you
06:15also
06:15got to deal with the fact that you know the most there's a bunch of stunning things because kyle
06:22whittingham teams that i watched in utah were not sloppy they didn't commit a ton of penalties uh
06:28they they were more like iowa waiting for you to make a mistake and then capitalizing than they are
06:33this this looks awful uh offensively defensively jay hill has come in and done a great job
06:39um now it's up to coach beck the offensive coordinator and that entire staff to it sounds
06:46like they're gonna pivot but even if you pivot you gotta you know and maybe they shouldn't have
06:51tried to force this offense on this group um but you know uh you still have time to turn it
06:59around
07:00um but it's a matter of doing it 248-539-9797 wolverine fans spartan fans if you want to get
07:07in
07:08on this um we will talk with jared goff today at 10 30 let's get to your open line calls
07:13we go to
07:14richard in detroit hello richard hey guys are you guys really delusional yes dan campbell every day
07:22dan campbell wasn't serious that was just all hype what are you talking about
07:28well what do you mean what am i talking about you guys let me make three points first off
07:34you guys keep talking about trading for people brad holmes is not going to give up draft picks
07:40and i i don't know how you get these guys on the show you know you should have asked dan
07:45campbell if he gets dizzy when hutch does his spin move i mean really what are you talking about
07:52you're unhappy with us richard is that it you don't like doug and i
07:56stick up for the fans instead of sticking up for the coaching staff and the lions i see i mean
08:01my
08:01gosh we don't have a scheme we don't have the players to do the scheme so so the coach is
08:06terrible
08:06coach be fired gm should go need to change quarterback the coach hires him the coach has
08:12input explain to me guys is this how it works the the gm drafts guys hires guys gets guys and
08:19says
08:19okay coach i got you a bunch of players go out and work your magic or do they have input
08:25and say
08:25this is a scheme we want to run these are the type of players we need go out and get
08:30the players
08:30to run this scheme well richard i mean i guess i don't know you might not like the way we
08:35put it i
08:35don't know that we have necessarily because for instance i have had some pretty harsh things to say
08:40about brad holmes i'm not happy with what brad holmes has done here of late and you know it took
08:45me a while to get off that position but richard i want to make sure and and you you don't
08:50need to
08:50understand this or even care but one of the ways that i operate is if i have a criticism of
08:56a coach
08:57a player a general manager i want to be able to back it up with facts to their face and
09:03so i'll wait
09:04until the information presents itself before i'm like in fire everybody mode we've talked about how
09:09kelvin shepherd is is feels like he's on a short leash and should be um so i don't i don't
09:16if you
09:17don't like the way we have to say it that's fine you know you then then you can say what
09:21there's a
09:21reason why we open up the phone lines and let you call up you know why they hired shepherd because
09:27dan
09:28campbell and brad holmes wants a yes man they don't want anyone going against why would that be
09:33why would they do that yeah if that doesn't seem counterintuitive to being a better football team why
09:38would you hire somebody just going to agree with you because an experienced defensive coordinator
09:45would say guys what we're doing is not working we need this guy at this position we need to go
09:51out
09:52and get him he would expose them for what they're doing wow why can't you guys like that because
09:58richard i don't agree with it yeah i disagree i don't think that there's any way that they are not
10:02doing what they think is right for their organization i think that everything they are
10:09doing richard they are doing for what they think is right for the organization and trying to win
10:15and it might be failing at this point but i don't think they hired kelvin shepherd to be a yes
10:21man
10:22and on top of that that would imply that they're happy with what's going on i think here's why i
10:29think
10:29kelvin shepherd was hired because i'll answer his question i think they liked the direction the
10:34defense was going under aaron glenn i think they liked that approach and they brought in kelvin
10:38shepherd who was part of that staff and thought that this might be a nice continuation of that it's
10:45been a couple years for season two here and it it doesn't look all that impressive and things might
10:51be afoot because of it they've changed things up before was anthony lynn a yes man was john morton a
10:59yes
10:59man is that is that why i'm sorry they're not coaching here anymore so i don't think they hire
11:05guys to be yes men i think they hire coaches to be competent and be good and if they're not
11:09going to
11:09get the job done they'll pivot and change 248-539-9797 thank you for the phone call richard it is
11:17carson anderson jared goff at 10 30 here on 97 one
11:20you
