00:01German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Sunday morning to
00:08the sound of sirens and explosions, as Russia had warned foreign nationals and diplomats against
00:14traveling to the city due to the risk of airstrikes. The previously unannounced visit is a show of
00:21support for Ukraine and aims to strengthen energy and defense cooperation between the two countries.
00:26According to German government sources, thousands of intercepted drones will soon be delivered to
00:32Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia launched 135 drones over Ukraine in overnight attacks, according to
00:40its armed forces. Kyiv's mayor said on Sunday morning that a bridge had been hit by at least
00:45one Russian drone, leaving two people injured. Elsewhere in the country, in the frontline region
00:51of Sumi, at least one person was killed and 16 were injured in Russian attacks, including guided
00:57bombs. A UN spokesperson said that some 15,280 civilians had been killed and injured in Ukraine
01:05during the first eight months of the year, while Russia's Defense Ministry has also claimed
01:12to have intercepted and destroyed 559 Ukrainian drones.
01:21Up to 500 schools across France will remain fully or partly closed on Monday,
01:27following a wave of protests by secondary school students, the education minister has said.
01:33Edouard Geoffrey said security conditions had not been met for schools to reopen,
01:38adding that 24 schools had been burned or ransacked since the protests began.
01:44Students are protesting over teacher absenteeism, long school days and dilapidated facilities.
