Hiroshi Sugimoto’s third solo exhibition at Lisson Gallery in New York, Unnatural Habitat, marks a return to the city that shaped his practice over fifty years. The show revisits his Diorama series, begun in 1975 after he first photographed lifelike displays at the American Museum of Natural History. It includes early works such as Polar Bear (1975), later images, recently rediscovered negatives, and photographs made in 2025. Four new color diorama photographs printed on washi paper appear as folding screens, or byōbu, giving the images sculptural presence. The exhibition examines perception, artifice and pictorial depth, coinciding with a 2026 presentation at the Singapore Art Museum and preceding the reopening of the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden designed by the artist.
