Just weeks before September 11th, 2001, one of the men chosen to hijack a plane and crash it into Washington… changed his mind.
He booked a one-way ticket back to Germany. He wanted out. Unlike the other hijackers, Ziad Jarrah was still deeply connected to the life he was supposedly preparing to leave behind.
He had a woman he loved. He regularly visited his family. He talked about getting married, having children, and building a future after finishing flight school. And on the morning of September 11th, just hours before boarding United Airlines Flight 93, he called his girlfriend… and told her he loved her three times.
Yet somehow, the man who had apparently been ready to abandon the entire plot weeks earlier still walked onto that plane. And shortly after 9:28 AM… he took control of it.
So what happened? How does a wealthy, well-educated young man, once described by those closest to him as fun-loving, ambitious and obsessed with aeroplanes, become one of the 19 men responsible for the deadliest terrorist attack in American history? And perhaps even more disturbingly… if Ziad Jarrah really did want out… what convinced him to come back?
