00:00I guess, I guess it's pretty pathetic.
00:05It's more than I've got.
00:08Well, keep it for me. Maybe it'll bring you good luck.
00:11Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at movie mysteries whose answers fans still continue to speculate about.
00:17We've included films that fail to answer these questions during their runtime,
00:21so movies where creators may have provided clues outside of the film still count.
00:25She was my world, and you took her from me.
00:33Number 20. Who is Sophie's real dad?
00:36Mamma Mia. We can dance, we can jive, we can even have the time of our lives.
00:41But we can't get over wondering who Sophie's dad is.
00:44Sophie's dad. I have to tell you, he is here.
00:49I know. I invited him.
00:52By the end of the film, everyone realizes the mystery has brought them all closer together.
00:57Because of this, Sam, Bill, and Harry are all happier being one-third of Sophie's dad than risking losing her
01:02altogether.
01:03Sure, it's a heartwarming turn, but that doesn't make the underlying mystery any less burning.
01:07You know, I have no clue which one of you is my dad, but I don't mind.
01:13After all, the film dangles the truth before us all the way until the climax.
01:17And while the overall message of love and acceptance has its own charm,
01:21fans have still spent nearly two decades debating and speculating over who it really could be.
01:33Number 19. What caused the time loop?
01:36Groundhog Day.
01:37When it comes to the film's central mystery, most wonder how long Phil Connors was stuck waking up to Sonny
01:43and Cher.
01:43But whether it was 10 years or 10,000, the real question is, why was he trapped in the time
01:48loop in the first place?
01:57While theories have ranged from it being a lesson for Phil to become a better man to him being trapped
02:02in purgatory,
02:03the movie never reveals what triggered the loop.
02:05Hey, they're chasing us. Come on, make it fun.
02:07And although it's fun watching him sculpt ice statues or punching the daylights out of Ned,
02:12this nagging question has always remained out there.
02:15As far as this mystery goes, it really has got us here, babe, that's for sure.
02:19That is a great sign.
02:20No, it's not.
02:21Don't listen to this man.
02:24It's too early.
02:27Number 18. What is the man's name?
02:30The Dollars Trilogy.
02:31Even if you haven't seen this trilogy, you're almost certainly aware of Clint Eastwood's gunslinger as one of cinema's most
02:37recognizable characters.
02:39Many even find it difficult to separate Eastwood from the man with no name,
02:42making him an essential part of the filmmaker's public persona.
02:45And yet each film actually gives him a different alias, including Joe, Manco, and Blondie.
02:51Hey, Joe, I prepared the wagon the way you asked me to.
02:55We're sitting out in the back here with two empty coffins.
02:58None of those names, however, are confirmed to be genuine.
03:01And the trilogy never reveals who he really is.
03:04We don't even know for sure if it's the same character or three different drifters with the same appearance and
03:09personality.
03:09I've never seen him before.
03:11His name is, uh, Manco.
03:14So, do we feel lucky?
03:16Not when we're still stuck wondering what the man's name is after six decades and counting.
03:21Come back!
03:23Wait, Blondie!
03:24Listen, Blondie!
03:26Number 17. How did the three seashells work?
03:29Demolition Man.
03:30Not many people would wonder about using the bathroom after being thawed out.
03:33But after watching Demolition Man, that is an important question to have.
03:37Here, humanity apparently evolved far enough to replace toilet paper with three small shells.
03:43I don't know if you guys know it, but you're, uh, you're out of toilet paper.
03:49Paper?
03:50Did you say toilet paper?
03:53Oh.
03:54They used handfuls of wadded paper back in the 20s.
03:59The characters seem to have fun messing with John Spartan, never explaining how it works.
04:03You got this little shelf with three seashells on it.
04:07He doesn't know how to use the three seashells.
04:11Screenwriter Daniel Waters gave a simple and TMI explanation.
04:15His friend, who was using the toilet when he called, told him about a bag of seashells that he used
04:20for decoration.
04:21Speaking with Ain't It Cool News, Sylvester Stallone gave an equally icky suggestion, saying, quote,
04:26Without being too gross, imagine how chopsticks work and use your imagination from there.
04:31With this in mind, we're probably just better off not knowing instead.
04:35So much for the seashells.
04:37Number 16.
04:38What was the Flash warning Batman about?
04:40Batman vs. Superman, Dawn of Justice.
04:43By this point, abandoned and repurposed DCEU projects can fill up a whole universe of their own.
04:48But the one that still plagues most fans' nightmares, no pun intended, is the vision of the Flash.
04:58Just when Bruce Wayne's dreams couldn't get any stranger, the speedster suddenly bursts through a portal.
05:04If his job was to be as frustratingly cryptic as possible, then job well done.
05:09Because Bruce understands none of Barry's message.
05:16While later films and comments from Zack Snyder have indicated it was connected to the nightmare timeline,
05:22the DCEU itself simply swept it under the rug.
05:25So, as far as the series is concerned, Bruce probably overreacted after having a bad dream.
05:39Number 15.
05:41What happened to the briefcase?
05:42Ronin.
05:43Remember the last time you chased people across Europe,
05:46manipulating and killing for a briefcase whose contents are never revealed?
05:49If you're Sam from Ronin, you most definitely do.
05:52What's in the case?
05:53That information isn't necessary.
05:55Is it heavy? Is it explosive? Is it chained to some unlucky bloke's wrist?
05:58Throughout the film, everyone around the protagonist risks their lives in a spiraling turn of events.
06:04All for a prize we know nothing about.
06:06Keeping the audience in the dark is what makes the briefcase so compelling,
06:10as viewers can feel just how high the stakes are.
06:12Greg ain't coming in unless he can figure out a safe exchange.
06:15He knows they'll kill him for the case rather than pay him for it.
06:19But this also turns the conclusion a bit disappointing.
06:22The film itself seems to wink at the audience,
06:25deliberately keeping us in the dark right past its final moments.
06:28This wasn't the first time viewers were perplexed about a mysterious briefcase in the 90s,
06:32but more on that later.
06:34It wasn't a case.
06:37I don't remember.

06:49Why did you say that name?
06:51It's his mother's name.
06:53It's his mother's name.
06:55Number 14.
06:56What's in the box?
06:57Barton Fink.
06:58We're not talking about the what's in the box that you might be thinking of.
07:02Keep that for me till I get back.
07:04It's just a lot of personal stuff, but I don't want to drag it with me.
07:08And I'd like to think it's in good hands.
07:10This box comes with a warning not to open it,
07:13something the titular character honors.
07:15Much like the later, more famous box mystery in Seven,
07:18some fans have speculated it might contain a character's head.
07:21See the idea, man?
07:23Tell us where the heads are.
07:24Maybe they'll go easy on you.
07:25Other theories include the box symbolizing Barton's guilt,
07:28writer's block, or the film casting a larger surreal shadow over the audience.
07:32Anyone familiar with the Coen brothers' style
07:34knows the directors rarely linger on their films past their runtime.
07:38Although a box office disappointment,
07:40the mystery of the box has kept Barton Fink in cinematic conversation
07:43over three decades since its release.
07:45What's in the box?
07:48I don't know.
07:52Isn't it yours?
07:58I don't know.
08:00Number 13.
08:01What happened to Riggan?
08:02Birdman.
08:03While we do see the protagonist taking to the sky earlier in the movie,
08:07it was revealed to be part of his overactive imagination.
08:10You see, this is where you belong.
08:15By the end, though, either his thoughts have broken beyond the confines of his mind,
08:20or Riggan may have actually mastered the art of flight.
08:22After stepping out the windowsill, the main character disappears from view.
08:26But does his daughter react with horror?
08:28Nope.
08:29Instead, Sam has a look of pure elation,
08:31looking up at the sky with a smile.
08:39We never learn if all of this was literal or part of the film's symbolism.
08:43Even so, it opens more questions than answers,
08:46as most fans aren't sure what triggers the kind of reaction Sam portrays.
08:50Are you laughing?
08:52Yeah.
08:52What's so funny?
08:55I can't smell them.
08:57Number 12.
08:58Is either man the thing?
09:00The thing.
09:00If you thought you had trust issues,
09:02then wait till you watch this John Carpenter sci-fi horror.
09:05After the Antarctic base is destroyed,
09:07final survivors, MacReady and Childs, are left in the freezing wilderness.
09:11The problem?
09:11Neither can be certain whether the other man is the titular alien.
09:16Are you the only one who made it?
09:19Not the only one.
09:21The film leaves us with a haunting visual of the pair's final exchange,
09:24with no option but potentially dying next to the monster that started it all.
09:29Fire's got the temperature up all over the camp.
09:34Won't last long, though.
09:37Neither will we.
09:38Even decades later, fans continue to analyze and scrutinize every frame to look for answers.
09:43So, are the men who they say they are, or is the thing hiding in plain sight?
09:48We'll leave it to you to see what happens.
09:50Why don't we just wait here for a little while?
09:59See what happens.
10:01Number 11.
10:02What is the narrator's name?
10:04Fight Club.
10:04In a movie as out there as this one,
10:07it's surprisingly easy to overlook that Edward Norton's character goes entirely unnamed.
10:12And this is how I met...
10:14Tyler Durden.
10:15With the film so obsessed with uncovering the mystery behind who Tyler Durden is,
10:18the narrator's own identity gets lost in the mix.
10:21Then again, that may well be the point,
10:23as his identity crisis is ultimately what the story is all about.
10:26What did you just say?
10:27What is wrong with you?
10:28What did you just call me? Say my name.
10:30Tyler Durden. Tyler Durden, you f***ing freak. What's going on?
10:33Still, that doesn't mean we can't be curious about who he is
10:36and why his name remains conspicuously absent.
10:38Maybe, apart from not talking about Fight Club,
10:41one of the hidden rules is not asking about his name.
10:44This is impossible.
10:45No.
10:46This is crazy.
10:47People do it every day.
10:48They talk to themselves.
10:50They see themselves as they'd like to be.
10:52They don't have the courage you have to just run with it.
10:56Number 10.
10:56How Much Was Real?
10:58American Psycho.
10:59Plenty of movies are shown through the lens of an unreliable main character.
11:02Although we considered choosing the 2019 Joker as well,
11:05American Psycho has seniority.
11:07Killed a lot of people.
11:09Some escort girls in an apartment uptown.
11:13Some homeless people, maybe five or ten.
11:14The film follows Patrick Bateman, a materialistic psychopath who commits several murders and other crimes throughout the course of the
11:21film.
11:21Because I had dinner with Paul Allen twice in London.
11:25Just ten days ago.
11:27No, you...
11:31Didn't.
11:32However, at the film's end, Bateman's lawyer tells him he recently had dinner with one of his victims in London,
11:37and a realtor tells him that the apartment he killed the man in supposedly doesn't belong to him.
11:42A notebook Bateman's assistant finds is full of graphic drawings and other disturbing content,
11:47theoretically leading to the possibility that Bateman is imagining at least some of his violent outbursts.
11:53I'm just a happy camper.
11:55How much and which ones remain ambiguous decades later.
11:59Number nine.
12:00What was in the FedEx box?
12:02Cast Away.
12:02This film follows Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee who survives a plane crash on a deserted island for several years.
12:09The air got to it.
12:10The air got to it!
12:12While on the island, Chuck makes use of items he finds in the packages he was transporting when the crash
12:17occurred.
12:18However, he leaves one of these parcels unopened,
12:20eventually delivering it to its intended recipient at the film's end.
12:27FedEx!
12:29But we never learn what's inside the box that Chuck went to such lengths to deliver.
12:33A prominent theory is that it contained divorce papers,
12:36considering the ranch scene at the beginning and end of the film has one of the names missing from over
12:40the entrance.
12:41The director, Robert Zemeckis, once joked that it contained a satellite phone.
12:45Number eight.
12:46Bob's Whisper.
12:47Lost in Translation.
12:48Aren't you gonna wish me and have a good fright or something?
12:51Following the brief friendship and romance of two married American strangers in Tokyo,
12:56Lost in Translation initially sees Bob and Charlotte part ways with an unsatisfactory conclusion to their time together.
13:02Hey, you.
13:05However, Bob spots Charlotte on his way to the airport and approaches her,
13:09whispering something to her before kissing her goodbye.
13:16Was it a bittersweet reflection on their time together?
13:19Or maybe he told her to look him up in the States.
13:21Whatever he said, the ambiguity allows for many interpretations,
13:25all of which can be tailored to our own opinions on how their romance should turn out,
13:29which kind of makes it perfect just the way it is.
13:32Number seven.
13:32Who was V?
13:34V for Vendetta.
13:37V for Vendetta follows a masked vigilante slash freedom fighter slash terrorist known only as V.
13:42While his true identity is a mystery, some things are known about the man.
13:47I've discovered several cellular anomalies in his blood that I've been unable to categorize.
13:51The mutations seem to have triggered the abnormal development of basic kinesthesia and reflexes.
13:57He was once imprisoned, and experiments were performed on him that gave him superhuman strength and endurance.
14:02He was kept in room five, denoted by the Roman numeral V.
14:07A fire there also heavily disfigured him.
14:09Some suggest he was once a member of the ruling fascist party.
14:13In 2002, I fell in love with a girl named Christina.
14:17That year I came out to my parents.
14:19Others suggest he was assigned female at birth,
14:22citing the story Evie finds in a cell about a lesbian actress named Valerie as being V's own story.
14:27But the end of the movie tells us it doesn't matter.
14:30V is anyone and everyone being oppressed.
14:33What I am is a man in a mask.
14:35Well, I can see that.
14:36Number six.
14:37How much of Verbal's story was true?
14:39The Usual Suspects.
14:41It all started back in New York six weeks ago.
14:43The bulk of this neo-noir crime film is told in flashback by Verbal Kent,
14:47a criminal who describes the circumstances that led him and his colleagues onto a boat where a drug deal went
14:52horribly wrong,
14:53leaving most of the people there dead.
14:55I came clean.
14:56I told it like it happened on the boat, so what if I left out how I got there?
14:59By the film's end, it's clear that Verbal changed some of the names and contents of his story,
15:04drawing them from words he saw in the room around him.
15:06But was he merely changing the surface of what occurred,
15:09or did he obscure or lie about everything that happened?
15:12Soze looks over the faces of his family.
15:17Then he showed these men of Will what Will really was.
15:21Granted, most of what they did in public probably happened,
15:24but in private, we'll never know.
15:25It may not be the greatest trick the devil ever pulled, but it's certainly up there.
15:30If there really is a Kaiser Sosa, he's going to come looking for you.
15:32Number five.
15:33The Joker Scars.
15:34The Dark Knight.
15:35You want to know how I got these scars?
15:38Yes, yes we do.
15:39The Joker in The Dark Knight is a complete mystery to both the characters and the audience.
15:43He's like a storm that drops on Gotham with no concrete goal other than to sow chaos
15:48and demonstrate that everyone is just like him.
15:50However, the Joker tells several stories about the origins of his facial scars.
15:54He sticks the blade in my mouth.
15:58Let's put a smile on that face.
16:02In one, he claims his father gave them to him.
16:04In another, he claims he did it to himself.
16:06The mystery of how he got them will never be resolved.
16:09And that's kind of the point of his character.
16:11I stick a razor in my mouth and do this to myself.
16:17And you know what?
16:19She can't stand the sight of me.
16:21Batman is defined by his past, which motivates his present.
16:25While the Joker doesn't care where he came from.
16:27Just like he doesn't care about anything else.
16:30You know how I got these scars?
16:31No.
16:32But I know how you got these.
16:39Number four.
16:41Is Cobb still dreaming?
16:42Inception.
16:45Something, isn't it?
16:46Sticking with Christopher Nolan's oeuvre,
16:48Inception is perhaps the director's most mind-bending work.
16:52Right, so what happens when we die?
16:54We drop into limbo.
16:55Are you serious?
16:56Limbo?
16:56It follows a team of criminals who usually extract information from others' dreams,
17:00Attempting to implant one instead.
17:03This one was hers.
17:04She'd spin it in the dream and would never topple.
17:08Just spin and spin.
17:09The team's leader, Cobb, seeks to perform the job so he can return to his children in the States.
17:15Androids!
17:16How are you?
17:17How are you?
17:18How are you?
17:19At the film's end, he does.
17:21But he also sets a top spinning.
17:23This top will keep spinning if he's still dreaming.
17:26And while Cobb walks away without seeing it,
17:28The top does wobble before the film ends.
17:31Many have theorized that Cobb is still dreaming,
17:33Citing his absent wedding ring and the children still being young,
17:36Despite his long absence as evidence.
17:38But the ending remains deliberately ambiguous.
17:41Number three.
17:42Is Deckard a replicant?
17:43The Blade Runner franchise.
17:45Rick Deckard is a Blade Runner,
17:46A hunter of rogue synthetic replicants or androids.
17:49That much is clear.
17:51You're reading a magazine.
17:52You come across a full-page nude photo of a girl.
17:54Is this testing whether I'm a replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard?
17:58Just answer the questions, please.
17:59But it's been theorized that Deckard is a replicant himself,
18:02Having been tasked by humans to hunt his own kind without even being aware of it.
18:11This is supported by his recurring unicorn dream,
18:14And finding an origami unicorn left at his apartment by his partner.
18:17You might think Denis Villeneuve's sequel would clear this up,
18:20Given that Deckard is still alive and replicants have a limited lifespan,
18:24But he also apparently had a child with a replicant,
18:26Though we suppose they could have crossbred.
18:28Even the director and star have had disagreements,
18:31With Harrison Ford claiming Deckard is human,
18:33While Ridley Scott believes him a replicant.
18:36Number two.
18:36The photo.
18:37The Shining.
18:42Although almost everyone knows the plot of The Shining,
18:45Namely that the caretaker of a remote hotel, Jack,
18:47Goes crazy and tries to murder his family,
18:49The movie remains a dense enigma.
18:51The film concludes with Jack freezing to death after getting lost in the hotel's maze.
19:08However, a final shot inside the hotel shows a party from the 1920s with Jack front and center.
19:14Director Stanley Kubrick stated that Jack was the reincarnation of a previous caretaker.
19:18This aligns with the ghost of the previous caretaker telling Jack that Jack has always been the caretaker.
19:24However, others have theorized that everyone in the photo has been absorbed into the history of the hotel by the
19:29dark force that haunts it.
19:32Before we continue, be sure to check out WatchMojo's 24-hour live stream.
19:36All of your favorite videos in one place, 24-7.
19:39Always on, always live.
19:41Are you not entertained?
19:43Number one.
19:44What's inside the briefcase?
19:46Pulp Fiction.
19:47What is it?
19:50Is that what I think it is?
19:51This anthology crime movie follows a group of interconnected criminals.
19:55Mm-hmm.
19:57This is a tasty burger.
20:00One of the storylines follows Vincent and Jules,
20:02two hitmen who work for crime lord Marcellus Wallace,
20:05who are tasked with retrieving a briefcase.
20:07The case is only opened a few times,
20:09and while its contents are never named or explained,
20:12a golden glow appears to emanate from within.
20:15We happy?
20:17Vincent?
20:20We happy?
20:21Yeah, we happy.
20:24Essentially, it's just a MacGuffin, a plot device.
20:26However, that hasn't stopped much speculation as to what it could be.
20:30According to co-writer Roger Avery,
20:32it was originally meant to be diamonds,
20:34but this was scratched.
20:35The theories range from valuable objects like gold or even radioactive material,
20:40to more arcane items like the Holy Grail,
20:42or even Marcellus Wallace's soul.
20:44Do you want to continue this theological discussion in a car?
20:47Whatever it is, it's beautiful.
20:49What other movie mystery lives in your mind rent-free?
