00:00You know, Boomer, it's easy to be Monday morning quarterback
00:02on conversations like this with Sam Darnold,
00:04but are you surprised at all on what you've seen the last two years with him?
00:10I mean, if you count the playoffs, Boomer, he's 31-6.
00:14I mean, with two different teams, he goes to really two great organizations
00:19that know how to utilize his ability in Minnesota,
00:22and then he goes to Seattle.
00:24Hell, he was even starting that way when he was in San Francisco
00:26for that little time there with Kyle Shanahan.
00:28Are you surprised Monday morning quarterback-wise?
00:33I mean, you know, after the fact.
00:35When he was here as a rookie, he was 20 years old,
00:38and they gave him the starting job, and that's insane.
00:41And, of course, Jet fans and fans in general just don't have any patience anymore.
00:45Remember, Patrick Mahomes sat for a year.
00:47We all know about Aaron Rodgers sitting for three and a half years
00:50or four years, whatever it was.
00:51I mean, the position is the hardest position in all of sports to master.
00:55That's why Geno Smith, after all these years, has finally come back
00:59and has been a serviceable, competent quarterback.
01:03Sam, I think, finally found his calling.
01:06He went to quarterback school in San Francisco,
01:08played under Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota, which I thought was terrific.
01:11You know, Minnesota made the wrong decision.
01:13They should have never let him go.
01:15And I think it's one of the reasons why they fired their GM,
01:17because he was so in love with J.J. McCarthy,
01:20who's turned out to be an unindicated disaster here early in his career.
01:23But it just goes to show you that, you know, if you're a good guy,
01:27keep your head down.
01:28Don't make it about yourself.
01:30Continue to learn.
01:31Be the physical presence that you were in college.
01:34Eventually, when you grow into it, you can really be a success.
01:38So I'm not going to sit here and say that I'm overly surprised,
01:40but I think he had Kevin O'Connell,
01:43and he also had Clint Kubiak as an offensive coordinator.
01:46And I think Clint's going to do a great job in Vegas,
01:48and I think this will be a real interesting year now
01:51with the new guy calling plays out there in Seattle.
01:54And with the loss of their running game,
01:56and they're going to be relying on rookies,
01:58we'll see a little bit more, I think,
02:00pressure on Sam to really perform
02:02and be the reason that they're winning,
02:04not the reason that, you know, he's keeping things going
02:07and they're leaning on their defense and running game as much.
02:10Boomer, I think I could ask you this question about Darnold, too,
02:13because when you're a player that's drafted into a place like Cincinnati,
02:19like the Jets, who haven't won in a lot of years,
02:23it's a lot of pressure.
02:24How tough was it for you coming out
02:27and going into that situation in Cincinnati
02:30where, hey, dude, you got beat up your first couple years there.
02:33I mean, and then you had to overcome that,
02:35and then you turn out to be an MVP
02:37and you take that team to a Super Bowl.
02:39How tough are those three years for a quarterback
02:42when you are put in those untenable situations,
02:45like a Cam Ward, say, in Tennessee?
02:48You know, I was 23 when I got drafted,
02:50and I had Kenny Anderson there for two years in front of me,
02:53and I had Turk Schoenert, and I had Sam Weish,
02:56a former quarterback as a head coach.
02:58So I was in the right place at the right time,
03:00and things worked out really well for me.
03:02Sam Darnold was not in the right place at the right time.
03:06Cam Ward may not be in the right place at the right time.
03:08Jaden Daniels may not be in the right place at the right time.
03:12You know, the guys like Jaden Daniels, C.J. Stroud, Cam Ward,
03:16all these guys have immense pressure on them to perform this season.
03:20There is no question about that.
03:21And, you know, watching all three of those guys
03:24and watching them take a step back,
03:26now some of them have been injured because they, you know,
03:29they play the game differently than the way we played when I played.
03:32So I would say there's immense pressure on all of these guys.
03:36And, you know, Cam Ward especially because he came out
03:39and he was the number one overall pick.
03:41There were high expectations.
03:42He doesn't back down.
03:44You know, he says some really stupid comments as well,
03:46just because he's young, and this is the way young talk these days.
03:50He's got to learn to temper his negativity as well,
03:53and hopefully Brian David will get the best out of him,
03:56much like he got the best out of Josh Allen in Buffalo.
03:58See you later.
03:58See you later.
03:59Bye.
03:59Bye.
