00:00Hey, Shabbat Shalom, brothers and sisters. Welcome back. I thank you again for joining me today.
00:04Today I want to do a book review, and this book, I wanted to do a book review, and it
00:08kind of
00:09slipped my mind for a little while. Other projects, other things, I'm doing research and all, but
00:13anyways, the book's right here. I'm going to do it, and I hope you guys are interested in
00:18find your copy. Anyways, this book is called King and Messiah as the Son of God,
00:24Divine, Human, and Angelic, Messianic Figures in Biblical and Related Literature. Now, the
00:30two authors in this are married scholars, I call them probably the power couple. This
00:38book blew my mind. Adela Yarborough Collins and John J. Collins. Adela, her expertise is
00:44the New Testament, while her husband's John is the Old Testament, so it goes like bread
00:50and butter, I guess. This book here, when I bought it, I already had underlines and highlights,
00:58things like that in it, but 2008 when this book was copyright, the copyright of it, the
01:07book has 261 pages. It's got a table of contents here, the preface, abbreviations, introduction.
01:16Chapter 1 is the king as the king as son of God, which Caesar, talking about Caesar. Number
01:252 is the kingship in Deuteronomistic and prophetic literature. 3 is Messiah and son of God in Hellenistic
01:35period. Number 4 is Messiah and son of man. Number 5, Jesus as Messiah and son of God in the
01:42letters of Paul. Number 6 is Jesus as Messiah and son of God in the synoptic gospels. Number
01:507 is Jesus as son of man. Number 8 is Messiah, son of God and son of man in the
01:57gospel and
01:58revelation of John. Then you've got a conclusion. You've got a bibliography right here, index of
02:04modern authors, and you've got an index of scripture and other ancient literature. So they're not
02:10just going, of course, they're not going by just the Bible alone. They're just other ancient
02:15documentation. That's what they got there. I could read this preface for you real quick.
02:22This book is, this book had its origins in the speaker's lecture delivered at Oxford in May
02:28of 2006. Originally, there were six lectures, three by John J. Collins and three by Adela Yarborough
02:35Collins. We have each written an additional chapter. John's new chapter is chapter 2 and
02:41Adela's is chapter 8. We would like to thank the Oxford faculty for their extraordinary hospitality
02:48in that occasion, especially Chris Rowland, Hugh Williamson, John Day, John Barton, Robert
02:56Morgan, Chris Tuckett, Paul Joyce, Christine Joines, Sue Gillingham, Marilyn Adams, Martin Goodman,
03:09Gaza Vermesh, and Allison Salvosin. We also benefited from the sessions with the Oxford
03:18biblical faculty after the lectures. Martin Goodman, John Muddyman, and Chris Tuckett each
03:25presented a thoughtful and helpful critical response. In gratitude for their hospitality and
03:31intellectual and social fellowship, we dedicated this book to the Oxford faculty, which has got
03:39abbreviations right here. I'll just, I'll show you the first pages, another full page of abbreviations
03:46on that, of course. But yeah, this book blew my mind. I didn't realize that Caesar was
03:55technically termed a son of God. And when Yeshua started going around and word got around that he, you
04:01know, after, after a while, you know, son of, son of God or even, even the son of, son of
04:07David
04:07was a threat because, you know, David, the line of David had a kingship, you know, it was like he
04:15had a
04:16rightful place as a king. And of course, you know, Caesar and Rome wouldn't like that, but son of God
04:21also would be really disrespectful. And one wonders, is that why in the gospels at times that, uh,
04:29Jesus, Yeshua, Jesus said, uh, don't tell anybody about this? Don't tell who I am. Was that what he, what
04:36he's
04:36worried about? I mean, because he had a certain, maybe he had a certain timetable. He had to do certain
04:42things, but if this was let out earlier, he probably couldn't fulfill his mission as adequately as he was, you
04:52know, Yahweh wanted him to. Makes you wonder about that. But yeah, I got this book. I remember I got
04:58this book cheap. I can't remember the price of it on Amazon and, uh, it's barely got some wear and
05:03tear
05:03on it, but like I said, it's got, uh, underlined, underlined things and sentences, paragraphs, uh,
05:11highlights had, uh, did have a marker somewhere. I just can't find it, but it had like a little tab
05:17must've fell in the book. But yeah, this book, uh, says, uh, Adela Yorbro Collins is Buckingham
05:26professor of New Testament criticism and interpretation at Yale university. Among her
05:31other books is cosmonology and, uh, can't read that word smudged in Jewish and Christian circles.
05:40John J. Collins is Holmes professor of Old Testament criticism and interpretation at Yale
05:47university. It's many other books include the Bible after Babel historical criticism in a postmodern
05:54age. That's Erdman's of course, uh, Erdman publishing companies, the one that did this book. Uh, then he's
06:01got some, uh, he's got some people commenting on it, giving it good praise and everything. Uh, I could
06:07read one from Chris, Christopher Roland Queens college, Oxford says here the combined wisdom of Adela and
06:17John Collins is here brought to bear on the study of messianism, its origins in history and its role
06:24in the emergence of Christian theology. Their, uh, grasp on the subject and their intellectual
06:30breadth will make this book a standard reference point for the study of messianism for years to
06:37come. And that's, uh, there's a couple other ones, but I didn't want to get into that too much.
06:41I mean, I'll let you, you get the book, read it yourself. I think this is a excellent book that
06:48will make you think it will make you think because like I said, I didn't know. Caesar said he was,
06:54you know, a son of son of God, Yahweh, whatever son of God, but, but it did open my eyes
07:01and
07:01everything. And I hope you get it. Got it on amazon.com. Check it out. Comment below. If you've,
07:07you know about this book, read it or anything, let me know your opinion on it, how you, how you
07:13responded after reading it. And, uh, that's all I have to say right now. I thank you guys again for
07:18joining me. Uh, hit me up, give me a big thumbs up, hit that notification bell and, uh, please
07:25subscribe. I got more content. Check out my other com, uh, content and let me know on that if
07:31something piques your interest. Anyways, that's all I have to say right now till we meet again,
07:35brothers and sisters, peace out and shalom.
