00:00Three powerful swamps are crossing the Pacific Ocean, with experts pointing to unusually warm waters
00:05linked to a historical Niño event as a key factor behind their development.
00:10Hurricane Lowell struck them to Category 5, the highest level on the hurricane scale, as it moved the westward.
00:16It was followed by Category 4, Hurricane Carina.
00:19Meanwhile, tropical storm Mary intensified into a hurricane Wednesday night,
00:24according to the United States National Hurricane Center.
00:27Mary was located about 600 kilometers southwest of the southern tip of Baja California,
00:32with maximum sustained winds of around 130 kilometers per hour.
00:37The National Hurricane Center said hurricanes Lowell and Carina are expected to pass well away from the Hawaiian Islands.
00:45El Niño is a climate pattern that warms large areas of the Pacific Ocean.
00:49Warmer ocean waters can provide more energy and moisture to developing tropical systems, helping storms strengthen.
01:01Precisely regarding El Niño, the United Nations Climate Agency warned of its potential devastating impact on communities and economies,
01:09issuing a call to action to save lives and protect livelihoods.
01:13El Niño will deliver a major blow to communities, economies, and supply chains across the globe.
01:21So many sectors will be affected.
01:24Agriculture, trade, fisheries, health, energy, transport, water resources, disaster management, to name but a few.
01:35We are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods and extreme weather.
01:42We expect these impacts to multiply and cascade as El Niño intensifies.
01:48We have the forecast, the foresight to save lives and protect livelihoods.
01:54Today, we are issuing a call to action.
01:57The science is clear.
01:59We have the knowledge and tools to prevent El Niño-related hazards becoming a crisis.
02:06Let us join together and ensure that we leave nobody behind.
