00:00So I think the Commanders could be the worst team in the NFL.
00:03It's hard to project them with the worst record
00:06because the Browns quarterback situation is so dire
00:09that the team could surrender at the trade deadline
00:11while the Cardinals' schedule is so brutal.
00:15Relitigating what the Commanders did after reaching the NFC Championship game in 2024 is tricky.
00:20It's easy to condemn the Laramie Tunsil and Debo Samuel trades,
00:24but those moves made sense at the time.
00:27The Commanders got so little besides Jaden Daniels from the 2024 draft
00:31that the seeds of decline may have already been sown.
00:36Damn.
00:37That's brutal.
00:38He's theorizing they could be amongst the worst teams in the league.
00:42I acknowledge that Deboa had them at 7.7 wins.
00:45I want to know the cavalcade of the 32-year-old acquisitions
00:48because one of the things that we talked about was in this offseason,
00:52especially with the defense, they got younger and faster.
00:55So the acquisitions were not 32-year-olds in the offseason.
00:59Well, he's going through the...
01:00I mean, he's listing a lot of...
01:02He's listing Marcus Mariota.
01:04Terry McLaurin turns 31 in September.
01:06So he's being a little liberal with that age.
01:10Yeah, I mean, the free agent acquisitions were, by and large, younger guys.
01:15Stephon Diggs, who was a late pickup, older.
01:18But I don't know this cavalcade of 32-year-old acquisitions.
01:23He mentions Fabian Moreau, 32.
01:26Dietrich Wise, 32.
01:28Who's on the PUP list.
01:29Yeah.
01:29Andrew Wiley, 32.
01:31Like, there's his backups.
01:33They're naming backups.
01:34But those are also guys that are re-signing.
01:37Right.
01:38I'm just giving you his list.
01:40He's just being negative, man.
01:41The reality is, I have not double-checked it,
01:44but I heard they still, you know,
01:45last year they were the oldest team in the league.
01:47Yeah.
01:47And they're still one of the oldest teams in the league.
01:50I think I heard second oldest team in the league.
01:52I don't think that that's accurate.
01:53It might be, but I thought I saw a list
01:55and I saw the bottom three or four
01:56and they weren't amongst them.
01:57Okay.
01:58I mean, it might change after the cut-down date.
02:00Yeah.
02:03I'd have to look at average age for all the NFL rosters.
02:05Yeah, I mean, I don't think it'd be that hard to figure out.
02:07I think that's a stretch to say
02:08they'd be the worst team in the league.
02:10Could I see a scenario where they had a record
02:13much like they had last year?
02:15Yeah, I could see that scenario,
02:16especially if Jaden went down.
02:17Well, that's what would have to happen, though.
02:20I mean, if he stays healthy for 17 games,
02:22they're not going to win five games.
02:24It's hard to imagine,
02:26but they're currently dogs in all but like four or five.
02:31And again, we don't know how the season will play out.
02:33Yeah.
02:33I mean, that's why I've been so negative about it.
02:37I don't think they're going to threaten the playoffs
02:40unless Jaden just puts his cape on and plays incredible
02:44despite all of the BS around him
02:47and he's able to stay healthy,
02:48which is somewhat hard to imagine.
02:51Last year was so trauma-inducing, traumatizing,
02:55just seeing him just continually go down with random things.
03:01It's just I can't get it out of my brain.
03:03Yeah.
03:04You're scared to death.
03:05You got residue in there.
03:06Like, I've been in a lot of car accidents, thank God.
03:09The worst one was when I was T-boned in the vet.
03:12That one was my worst one.
03:13But most of them have been relatively minor.
03:16Yeah.
03:18When I wake up from a nap
03:21and see my wife tailgating some car,
03:22I freak out.
03:23I've been traumatized.
03:24That's a funny sequence.
03:26You're just sleeping in the car.
03:29And then as soon as you wake up,
03:30you're backseat driving immediately.
03:33Backseat driving.
03:34I understand it.
03:34I'm screaming.
03:35I'm like, oh, my God.
03:36They have the brake lights on.
03:38We're going to get another freaking collision.
03:41That's kind of funny.
03:42Has she had car accidents?
03:44She hasn't had car accidents.
03:46So she has the clean track record,
03:48but you're grilling her.
03:49She's hit two bicyclists, just to be fair.
03:52Well, that is pretty...
03:53Yeah, like crosswalks.
03:55Crosswalk-type situation where you're at the light,
03:57and in her defense, it's like...
03:59They cross one.
03:59Yeah, no, who knows?
04:00It's just bad communication between the two.
04:02Look left, look right, look left.
04:04Did you see the video of a kid on a Lime scooter here in D.C.
04:09that was going through a crosswalk on an off-ramp heading to,
04:13I think it was one of the 95s, 695, 295.
04:17I saw it.
04:18He's going through it.
04:19He's doing what he should be doing.
04:20He's riding his scooter in the crosswalk,
04:22and a car from two lanes over cuts across traffic and clips him out.
04:27Well, just clips him.
04:28Luckily, he was okay.
04:29But, yeah, it didn't run, didn't stop.
04:31Yeah, I didn't see that.
04:33Can you imagine hitting somebody on a scooter,
04:36and then just peeling out and not stopping?
04:40Mm-hmm.
04:40I did not see that.
04:41That's insane behavior.
04:42I can't believe how many cars in the morning don't have working either headlights or taillights or brake lights.
04:51That's the cop in you.
04:53You're looking to pull the boat over for something.
04:54I couldn't believe this.
04:55There was a car last week that had no lights on.
04:58Yeah.
04:59Oh, I've seen that many times on the drive into work.
05:02Like on the BW Parkway.
05:03The headlights weren't on.
05:04The taillights weren't on.
05:05The BW Parkway especially, which is already dark.
05:07Okay?
05:08At like 5 in the morning, it's butt dark.
05:10And then you've got a car with no exterior lights.
05:13I mean, how do you drive?
05:15How do you drive with no lights?
05:17How do you do that?
05:18Here's how.
05:19At 4.30 in the morning.
05:20You're pushing around a beater, and you're just lucky it's still running.
05:23You're just happy.
05:25I just think people are just unaware.
05:28No, you got to.
05:29A lot of times these people don't have their lights on.
05:32And then if you flash your lights at them, they go, oh.
05:34And then they turn the lights on.
05:36Okay, maybe if one of their lights isn't working.
05:38But if none of your lights are working, when you start your car,
05:40you can't see five feet in front of you, you know your lights are off.
05:44But also, that car is clearly a fossil.
05:46Because now cars, the lights come on automatically.
05:49You should keep it on auto, though.
05:51The car should be illuminated.
05:52I'm sure it's a 15-year-old car, but I just couldn't believe it.
05:54But back to this conversation.
05:55Can you see a scenario where they're the worst team in the league?
05:581-800-636-1067.
06:01It is Open Line Thursday, brought to you by Window Nation.
06:04Search for new windows and doors.
06:05Search windownation.com.
06:06Their windows are measured to fit the first time.
06:08And installed by experts to last.
06:10Window Nation for your home, because it's where you live.
06:12The only scenario that I can see where they're the worst is
06:16the offensive line disaster is as advertised,
06:19where they're finishing 31st, 32nd in the league.
06:23Jayden gets hurt early, misses the majority of the games.
06:26And Marcus Mariota is the starting quarterback for this team.
06:30Then I can see a scenario where they finish with three or four wins,
06:33which could be amongst the worst records in the NFL.
06:37Well, if they have three or four wins,
06:39Dan Quinn's going to be spending a lot more time in his Hawaii house.
06:45Like, he can't survive that.
06:47That's unsurvive.
06:48I agree.
06:48He has less wins than last year?
06:50I agree with you.
06:51I don't think that that's a likely scenario.
06:53JP, it would have to be multiple injuries, not just Jayden.
06:57And it would have to be, like, all the defensive signings cratering,
07:01and they just don't improve on that side of the ball.
07:04But there's a possibility that the defensive signings don't live up to the hype.
07:07True.
07:07I mean, I think some of us lauded the Marcus Lattimore deal.
07:13Thought that Marcus Lattimore was going to be a productive player here in Washington,
07:18that he would be a difference maker.
07:19Now, these, can you find our reactions to the Lattimore deal?
07:21You know, I'm afraid to see what mine was.
07:24Well, he was a complete bust here.
07:26I was the highest on him.
07:29So it was the first one to call him out.
07:30That's the first time I saw him play with us.
07:32So if Owe...
07:34I hope my blush on him was bad.
07:35If Owe gives you, you know, six sacks this year,
07:38and doesn't force many fumbles, and is not a difference maker,
07:42well, then it could end up being a disaster.
07:45Right.
07:45If Sonny Stiles proves to be a guy who's a project,
07:49then it could be a disaster.
07:51But I think they're likely...
07:52I have them at eight wins.
07:53I think they're likely to bounce back and play better this year.
07:56I don't have complete faith that Jaden's going to play 17 games.
08:00I think it's hard to have that faith.
08:02You should have your mom pray for Sonny Stiles.
08:04Make sure he's, like, Defensive Rookie of the Year.
08:06Yeah, but that's...
08:07Have a throw in an extra prayer.
08:08No, but the top prayer is keep Jaden healthy.
08:11That's the top.
08:11That's the top.
08:12But the secondary prayer...
08:13Well, secondary prayer is the offensive line.
08:16Tertiary prayer is Sonny Stiles.
08:19Sonny Stiles.
08:19D-Roy.
08:21The D-Roy.
08:22Over your guy, Caleb Downs.
08:23Yeah, over Caleb Downs.
08:24I think that...
08:25I would bet against that.
08:26I probably wouldn't bet on it.
08:28I would bet against that.
08:28That's where the prayers come in to help.
08:30Yeah.
08:30I think Sonny Stiles is going to take a while to...
08:33You know, I think in three years, we got a real shot.
08:35Man, I hope he lights up Saquon Barkley in week one.
08:38I hope he just...
08:39Well, but he's got to show you signs that he's on that trajectory.
08:43Yeah, he needs a flash.
08:44Absolutely.
08:44He needs a pop.
08:45He needs a pop.
08:46I mean, he can't just go out there every week and go and just have, you know, three tackles.
08:50Now, you know, and allow guys to...
08:52I don't know.
08:53Does he have a good day if he has three tackles, but he's in coverage and kind of nobody catches
08:56any significant ball on him?
08:58I mean, maybe that's a good day.
08:59You can have a good game.
09:00I mean, in context, you know, context matters.
09:03You can't just throw out the numbers.
09:05But generally speaking, if you're a middle linebacker and you end up with three sacks,
09:08it's not great.
09:08But all that being said, Sunday, when they take on the Eagles, I want to do this at least
09:14two or three times while I'm watching Sonny Stiles.
09:16Whoa.
09:16Like, ooh.
09:17Yeah, yeah.
09:18Or, whoa, ooh.
09:21Like, I want a few of those moments.
09:23You want to have...
09:25I need a few.
09:26We're going to be at Honor Brewing together.
09:27Right.
09:28Should we have, like, a Sonny Stiles drinking game?
09:32Absolutely not.
09:33I mean, I have to be responsible.
09:34We can get an Uber.
09:38You're going to leave your car out there.
09:39Your car, sure.
09:40We'll figure it out.
09:41We'll workshop that, Jason.
09:43Just bang out for these calls.
09:44I know we're late.
09:45I just want to bang out a couple calls.
09:46Let's go real quick.
09:47Jermaine Bowie.
09:48Jermaine, what's up?
09:50Hey, what's up, guys?
09:51What's up, Jermaine?
09:52I know you guys were saying if we start off 0-3 that it's going to be a tough...
09:58Historically, you're pretty much cooked if you go by history.
10:02Yeah.
10:02If you look at our schedule, our schedule is front-loaded.
10:06We've got tough games the first eight games.
10:08But if you look at the back nine, they're not that tough.
10:11We can actually go...
10:13If we beat who we're supposed to beat, the Giants and the Colts in the first eight games,
10:16we can go 2-6 and maybe even go 8-1 if you look at the schedule.
10:20Yeah, we've done that kind of thing before, but you can't bank on that.
10:23You know, you can't bank on that.
10:25That's what we did in 2012, right?
10:27We started out 3-6.
10:28Is that where we were?
10:293-7?
10:30Code red.
10:30Yeah, it was a code red game or whatever.
10:33I would agree, though.
10:34I mean, Bengals at home, at zone, at Tennessee.
10:37Houston's going to be tough because of their defense.
10:39It's definitely softer on the back end.
10:40Atlanta at home, at Minnesota.
10:42I mean, yes.
10:43Definitely softer on the back end.
10:44Not world beaters.
10:45Yeah.
10:45All right, don't forget, Dave Richard will join us at 8 to give you that fantasy football advice
10:50you need for your last-minute drafts.
10:51And Grant Paulson, one of the hosts of Grant and Danny, and also one of the hosts of tonight's
10:56evening with Adam Peters at the Arlington Draft House.
10:59He'll join us coming up at 845.
