00:33C'est parti !
01:00The host country Mongolia and the United Nations have appealed to 197 delegations gathered here in Ulan Bator to use
01:07more than 400 scheduled events to find really tangible solutions for land degradation because recent wildfires and heat waves around
01:14the world show us that the climate change is accelerating.
01:17COP17 set sights on action plans for land restoration and finding funds to support them, but also raising awareness that
01:25many acute problems like migrations are actually the result of land degradation.
01:29Once your land is degraded, you will not be able to plant and you will have both food and water
01:36security, but you will have also migration and displacement.
01:39So here the people are not given the choice whether they're moving from their land, yes or no, but they
01:45don't have what to sustain their livelihood and what to make it resilient.
01:48The convention estimates that inaction on land costs the world almost 900 billion dollars a year, while investment in healthy
01:56land could generate up to 1.8 trillion through food production, water provision and carbon storing.
02:02Yet, the investment so far remains modest.
02:05And if you look at how much money goes into artificial intelligence for that matter, it is the same amount
02:11that goes into climate financing, $2 trillion a year.
02:15But when you double click on climate financing, less than 3% goes to land and water. It is way
02:22under invested.
02:24And here this white paper actually puts forward the reasons why businesses can actually invest into soil and water, but
02:31you bring returns.
02:32Every dollar invested into soil will give you at least $4 to $30 in exchange.
02:37The Ministerial Dialogue on Innovative Financial Mechanisms brought together some of the large financial institutions such as the World Bank
02:45Group, Development Banks of Asia, Africa, the Islamic World, European Investment Bank, GEF and the Climate Fund.
02:52They announced $1.3 billion of financing for land restoration and drought resilience across 23 countries on five continents.
03:00Several countries, including host Mongolia, announced new platforms for attracting private investment into land.
03:07One billion tree plantation initiatives has been done by Mongolian president and it is really successfully going on. Offering all
03:17these corporate companies that you can invest like 1% of your taxable income for this range lands or the
03:26green transition, you know, for the countries. And you can decide and you can implement the project by yourself, not
03:32involved from the government.
03:35Even if cops, including this one, fall short of reaching illegally binding global plans, they are considered to be successful
03:42as they bring countries to present national agendas and make pledges.
03:46In Riyadh, we have 35 initiatives under Riyadh Action Agenda. And we continued after that in 2025, in 2026. And
03:55we came here to Mongolia. And now we have 200 or to be exact 198 initiatives under Riyadh Action Agenda.
04:04During 12 days in Ulaanbaatar, alliances were forged, like the one between China and the League of Arab States, who
04:11made a joint five-year plan of cooperation to restore land. Countries shared experience in fighting desertification.
04:38In the green zone of COP17, open to the general public policy met real life. The people could come, meet
04:46experts, scientists, scholars, and scholars.
04:47city planners, even school projects, and learn how desertification influences their lives. Also, get a glimpse of Mongolian rich culture
04:56and tradition.
