02:22d alford to jordan hancock if there even is one and i asked d alford about it after practice and
02:29you know about the team having that faith in him the confidence in him about his ability to be able
02:34to do both and he said he had to play three or four games in a row on the boundary
02:38last year and
02:40that's really interesting right so yeah they feel good about it and yeah like i said when this all
02:45happened on sunday i think the key as you point out bulldog might be jordan hancock if you need a

02:50alford in a pinch to go outside you still feel okay with what you have at the nickel so really

02:56that flexibility to have the backup guy be able to do that allows you to feel comfortable if that's
03:01needed and that allows you then to keep another guy around the roster and you know they kept 10
03:06offensive linemen a lot of times they only keep nine that was another spot
03:09um where they did something like that so there was just they didn't keep a fullback though this
03:14time and just this time around i just felt there was some really interesting numbers based on how
03:19it had gone the last few years alford by the way had an interception against the bills in the bills
03:26lost to atlanta last year and a sack in that game weren't we talking about someone else yesterday

04:14i went a little too far in saying like he's probably had more good games in the nfl than palmer

04:19but it might be right to say that although he hasn't had a prolific career either neither guy has
04:24um what did you get today from anyone on what kind of role you think they have in mind other

04:31obvious you know not that it's official but you know punt returner and then do you think there
04:35might be a chance i mean there should be a chance but what kind of odds you'd put on his
04:41being any
04:43kind of relevant on offense so yeah i we didn't get anything as far as you know what the actual
04:51role
04:51is other than hey i mean even joe brady said he just met the guy today right so you know
04:56he's gonna
04:56we know he's a punt returner we know he provides some speed he can play on the offensive side
05:03i just don't know mike if there's enough numbers there for him to really see the field unless there's
05:07injury it was really a slot guy he's five foot seven that's kalil shakir's role i think they really
05:12you know they're gonna have shakir on the field a lot we know skylar bell can play in the slot
05:16and you'd have to elevate him anyway to to get those snaps to be on the offensive side you elevate

05:21sure he can play but you're probably doing it for the special teams you're probably doing it
05:25for the punt return role i'm looking back right now at his snap counts throughout his career
05:30offensive snap counts for a season he's only been over 40 percent one time 45 percent back with the
05:36arizona cardinals in 2022 otherwise he's generally mid to high 30s um offensive snap count and that's
05:42not nothing but i just don't know if there's opportunity here to get on the field um when you
05:48have the five guys who are pretty much spoken for in that role you know that that leaves me when
05:52we
05:53talked about this earlier in our show sale uh i said i'm not sure i'd be comfortable if his only
05:59role is punt return does that warrant i mean we're initially here we'll be talking about call-ups
06:05but like if he were going to be their main punt returner i you know you only get three of
06:10those
06:10so you're gonna have to find a spot for him if you want to have him in that role and
06:15i feel like with
06:16sam franklin as a specialist only on special teams already squatting on a roster spot i'm not sure how
06:23comfortable i am i feel like if dorch can't find a way to be on the field for a half
06:28a dozen snaps or
06:29something like some some package of plays that i have a hard time dressing him as my punt returner
06:34if that's all he's gonna do maybe i don't know i think they think it's important enough yeah they
06:39would do it i mean but then you only get but then you can't do it after three as you
06:43point out right
06:44and you have to figure out what you're gonna do i mean joey andreessen's kind of like that too he's
06:48on the he's on the team a lot because of special teams i mean how much is he going to

06:52he's really not going to play unless there's an injury to someone as you point out sam franklin

07:28say kalil shakir is returning the first punt week one i'd probably change that now i think greg

07:41clearly they targeted this guy for a reason yep and i i think the reason is because they
07:47aren't really comfortable right now with what they have at punt returner especially because
07:51kalil shakir is still banged up and didn't practice again today right yeah shakir's never
07:56i i understand the security of it uh no question but like if i'm if i'm you know joe brady

08:03brandon bean or whomever i don't want kalil shakir returning punts he'd be matters too much to
08:08the offense so you know mostly he's there as like a he's he's safe and you know you might think

08:17can protect himself but i don't know man it's just it's a lot i think for him to be back

08:22and you know considering how important he is to the offense so i don't think that's ideal i think
08:27they're still even with dorch i i i love that they claimed him and i want to take a look

08:34think in the end i'm gonna have a hard time if if that's all he's gonna be asked to do

08:40know who knows maybe that'll vary week to week too you know because if he's dressed he's he's up
08:44for three games and he does well in that role then maybe they put him on the 53 and they

08:49goes find you know snaps here or there whatever uh for him on offense yeah you know d alfred speaking
08:57him just triggered my memory he also has some punt returnability he had uh he had done a few
09:03years ago look at let's see 20 punt returns back in 2023 not a ton of extensive work but they

09:36that was really interesting was he said he was surprised like he was not expecting to be in the
09:40position he was in like he if you watch like one of the things last night that was happening
09:44yesterday from sunday to yesterday was how many lions fans were mad like i was seeing online lions
09:50fans mad at brad holmes or general manager how did you let greg dorch out of the building
09:54you should have kept my 53 housing out of the practice squad they released their practice squad
09:58at one open spot and people like oh yeah that's greg dorch suddenly he signs the bills and lions fans
10:02are mad so i asked him about that and i'm like hey lions fans seem pretty upset like about you

10:06you expect it he said he was not expecting that and i think i got the feeling talking with him

10:11that kind of led him to say like i don't want to stay here now because he felt like he
10:15deserved a spot
10:15he didn't get it i referenced that earlier dorch it's two things i think at once it's um he's kind
10:24of a cult hero type player like he's it the name doesn't roll off the tongue he wasn't drafted he's
10:29one of these guys that has produced some when he was with arizona but um is maybe somebody that's
10:35often overlooked the other part of it is detroit for as good as their offense might be and has been
10:41they're pretty thin like they they have stars up top at receiver and of course jameer gibbs at
10:48running back but i mean i don't know who comes after those guys with them isaac tesla is probably
10:53the next name and so i bet a lot of lions fans think they really need somebody like this
10:57that has had some production in the nfl and the lions decided it wasn't worth it to them so
11:04probably a combination of things there the um the bill's got some players back we don't have any sort
11:10official injury status or statuses yet but um you saw guys who've been out on the field
11:17yeah we did um very surprised like for us the immediate to go out there and see conor mcgovern
11:23out on the field and he was practicing today talked to them after and said were you surprised
11:27like no i told you guys i'd be ready for week one well it's before week one so i was
11:30a little surprised
11:31you know um so he was out there and so was key on coleman he returned terrell bernard who earlier

11:37day uh they they who at brady or being one of them said that he had been being nicked up
11:43and you
11:43know just you get shaq thompson in the building and he's been a bit banged up a little bit um
11:49you know so that's that's good and then and i was the other one oliver was back joe and dreesen

11:55back and cj gardner johnson was back cj gardner johnson was the other one that i didn't expect after
11:59kind of you know just going through everything the last week or so and um yeah they were out there
12:05now not everybody was out there we still didn't see several players most of them were working off
12:10to the side with trainers um khalil shakir and ty johnson jalen kilgore and jude bowery were all in
12:16that boat and then i saw um jordan hancock i didn't see him i think he somebody told me saw
12:22him on the
12:22exercise bike along with javon solomon so those what one two three four five six guys hancock bowery
12:29shakir johnson kilgore and solomon all did not practice but the other guys yep they were all back and
12:33that's obviously good news and good to see yeah gardner johnson was another guy that bean sort
12:37of sounded like yeah he's just like i'm hopeful you know we don't basically you know just let the
12:43door open that it could go either way so i'm encouraged that he was back at practice too
12:47because i was sort of expecting him not to be from the way bean sounded before practice began
12:52yeah me too and um on trail bernard obviously we know he's dealt with some injuries and then when you
12:56when you do bring in shack thompson you're kind of wondering like what's going on here right and
13:00for him to be back at practice that's that's good news and good to see obviously right and yeah
13:04shack thompson that also happened after our show even last night uh as it turned out and very rude
13:10of the bills that's that's i know um i don't want to say not surprising like what what what i
13:15feel
13:16like happened there is that was something we were talking about through the spring and once we got to
13:21the summer and it didn't happen it's sort of like just left over there as much as we talked about
13:25linebacker um but i think shack thompson like good good for them that he still wanted to come
13:32back here because i think he he helped them last year for sure and joe brady goes back with shack
13:38thompson to carolina his days just like you know brandon bean would but not as long and man brady's
13:43like this guy just like he he's just so great to have in the building i mean he just wants

13:47football all the time and both brady and being acknowledged they had been talking with shack
13:51thompson for a while and you know he's not the kind of guy i would have brady say uh bean

13:55something like he's this point of his career you know don't put your body through everything that
13:59you know camp and preseason have to offer but they do have to ramp them up still so i just

14:04what they do with them like i don't know you look at the roster and like is he i don't

14:09having shack thompson just sit as a backup right i mean he's on the practice squad he probably he gets
14:13elevated if there's an injury but it feels like bernard and caleb b larms or and dorian williams are
14:18your starters or whatever one of them is not going to be joe andresen is there um so it's great

14:24in the building i just wonder what the long-term plan is here with with shack thompson well we better
14:29get stops if we're gonna you know use a guy only for punt returning bulldog right i mean we're gonna
14:34have to quote for some punts make sure it pays off right instead of being a team that just sort

14:39gets run on a lot and has trouble getting off the field on defense so what is your just general
14:46attitude about what they'll be on defense we've talked a lot about how different it is new
14:50coordinator new players and certain players who aren't new maybe playing new roles or even
14:56changing their their body type and that kind of thing how do you how confident are you that it's
15:01all going to work i'm can't sit here and say i'm super confident it's going to work i think it's

15:07to be a wild ride and fun and interesting um i think a lot of times it will work in
15:11a lot of ways i
15:12think a lot of times they're gonna you're gonna have moments where you're like oh that kind of
15:15didn't happen the last few years and what i mean by that is and i've been pretty consistent on saying
15:19this and i'm going to keep saying it i think this defense is going to make more big plays more
15:23critical plays than we've seen in years past i also think they're going to give up more big plays
15:28and more critical plays because sean mcdermott's defense was based on being safe being fundamentally
15:33sound keep everything in front of you make the other team work don't get beat deep and generally that
15:38was the case they were amongst the league leaders every single year except for like one that he was
15:43the bill's head coach maybe two in like 20 yard pass plays allowed and you know explosive plays
15:47allowed now they did give up some in the run game we know that but mostly in the past game
15:51um but but
15:53they also a lot of times didn't come up with the critical big play when you need it especially in
15:58the playoffs obviously i just think this team is going to go after that more they're going to be
16:02more aggressive they're going to blitz a lot more from different places and they're going to live
16:07with the risks of that i think jim leonard's fine with that he's going to be more risky and you

16:11why jim leonard's going to be fine with that because i think that joe brady's fine with saying i have

16:16allen and if we have some plays that don't go our way in defense i can still outscore the other

16:20offense uh last thing of course you're very active on social media you're promoting all kinds of

16:31complimenting yourself about something like tua did or didn't do no i have to tell you i i do not
