00:01The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is cancelling its planned exhibit
00:06honouring British designer John Galliano,
00:09following fierce backlash over his past racism and anti-Semitism.
00:14The exhibit had been planned as the May 2027 Spring Costume Institute show,
00:19launched by the annual Met Gala,
00:21where Galliano's famed designs are regularly worn by the world's biggest stars,
00:25including by actress Zendaya when she co-hosted the event in 2024.
00:30The cancellation was announced after a number of donors and political leaders
00:34had come forward to express their opposition to the nine-month exhibition.
00:39Galliano has long been recognised as one of the fashion world's biggest talents
00:43for his flamboyant designs.
00:46He was at the pinnacle of that world for years as creative director of Christian Dior,
00:51but was fired from the post when a series of racist and anti-Semitic comments
00:55from 2010 and 2011 surfaced and went viral,
00:59leading to his conviction in an anti-Semitism trial in France.
01:03He made a comeback in 2014 when he was hired by Paris fashion house Maison Margiela,
01:09where he remained for a decade.
01:11Galliano, now 65, has apologised often for his outburst,
01:16claiming he had suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction.
01:20Many Jewish leaders have accepted his contrition as genuine too.
01:24He was to become only the third living designer to be the subject of a solo show
01:29at the Met's Costume Institute.
