Algerian president seeks to impose death penalty on arsonists

Algeria declared three days of mourning after wildfires killed 12 people and injured dozens. Authorities said 46 fires remained active, with 54 people hospitalised for burns, including six in critical condition.

00:00Algerian President Abdelmajid Taboun has ordered changes to the criminal code,
00:04saying he intends to reinstate the death penalty for arsonists after deadly wildfires.
00:21The president also declared three days of national mourning after fires in northern eastern Algeria
00:27killed at least 12 people and injured dozens.
00:33Interior Minister Saeed Saeed confirmed five deaths in Zizel, four in Bajaya, and three in Tizi Aoudzou.
00:41He said 54 people were receiving hospital treatment for burns, including six in critical condition.
00:47Meanwhile, Algeria's Civil Protection Agency said 46 fires remained active out of 193 recorded in the previous 24 hours.
00:57Three major highways were also closed because of fires.
