00:00I don't want to talk to you, I don't want to talk to you. I'm eating this.
00:05What's the matter?
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most disturbing,
00:11unexpected, and or terrifying ends in horror films.
00:15Some spoilers ahead for the following movies.
00:20Number 50, The Barn Victims, 28 years later, The Bone Temple.
00:25The demonic Jimmy and his followers rove the countryside with a bloodlust
00:28when they take over a farm.
00:30The cult leader orders his underlings to spend some extra time with the survivors.
00:34Then old Nick did speak to his favorite son, whose name was Jimmy Crystal.
00:39And he said unto Jimmy,
00:42You are now, Sir Lord, Jimmy Crystal, and you shall be my right hand.
00:4828 years later proves yet again that humans might be the most dangerous part of any post-apocalypse.
00:53Without focusing on the infected,
00:54these characters show just how cruel people can be under a leader with unchecked power.
00:59It is a supremely disturbing sequence that makes you want to close your eyes and cover your ears.
01:04You spend the rest of the movie waiting for the man's comeuppance
01:07before he meets his fate in a ceremonial way.
01:10I can't hear his voice anymore.
01:13Number 49, Ashley and Ashlyn, Final Destination 3.
01:17The victims in every Final Destination film test the limits of fate.
01:21No drinks in the room this time.
01:22In this scary sequence, Ashley and Ashlyn tempt death with their journey to a tanning salon.
01:27Little do they know that the surrounding environment is setting them up for their last appointment.
01:32As the temperature rises, both characters realize they're in a dire situation.
01:36Anybody who hates a hot day will be shaking in their boots watching this scene.
01:40A few degrees won't hurt.
01:42The two don't realize that the beds will soon become coffins,
01:45sending flames and unbearable conditions their way.
01:48It is certainly a concept that makes us reconsider this kind of hobby altogether.
01:53Number 48, Dan, Frozen.
01:55In what should have been a fun weekend on the slopes,
01:58three skiers realize they are trapped on a lift.
02:01Hello?
02:03Somebody help us, please!
02:06Somebody!
02:07Hello?
02:09What seems like an easy fix turns into a deadly set of circumstances.
02:13Joe, Parker, and Dan run through every possible escape plan.
02:17Their failed schemes force them to take drastic measures that'll have you biting your nails.
02:22In this key scene, Dan's dramatic exit begins with a serious fall.
02:26It's not enough to injure his legs, either.
02:28Once the wolves smell him, this poor character becomes food for wild animals.
02:33Frozen lets you sit in the horror of this survival plot twist to make things even worse.
02:37No!
02:41Number 47, The Mandrakas Kids.
02:44When a stranger calls.
02:45It's not always what you see that terrifies you the most.
02:48In this classic setup, a babysitter starts to answer prank phone calls that turn sinister.
02:53Have you checked the children?
02:55Robert, I don't think this is very funny.
02:59Bobby?
03:03Who is this?
03:04Jill Johnson keeps answering in the hopes that it will stop or that the police will come to help her.
03:10She is completely unaware of what's happened to the children she's supposed to watch.
03:14After learning that she has an unexpected visitor, Johnson tries to save herself.
03:18Listen to me.
03:19You traced a call.
03:20It's coming from inside the house.
03:22Our squad cars are the way over there right now.
03:24Just get out of that house.
03:26We come to realize later that the kids were long gone by that point.
03:30With such a horrifying premise, when a stranger calls starts things off with a bang that likely inspired a whole
03:35sub-genre of horror movies.
03:37Number 46, Derry, Jeepers Creepers.
03:40While he might have made some dumb decisions, he did not deserve to go out like that.
03:45Derry and Trish Jenner end up on a road trip from hell in this scary film.
03:48Once they encounter the Creeper, they become entangled in a game they never signed up for.
03:53What the hell was he doing?
03:56Dumped something down that pipe.
03:58Wrapped in a sheet.
03:59The third act builds to a climax where Justin Long's character hangs in the balance.
04:04In a kinder movie, the male lead would survive after a thrilling escape or some last-minute action.
04:09Don't you be a hero!
04:11I have everything the same inside you! Take me!
04:13Jeepers Creepers chooses to punish the loyal brother by sending him off with the winged demon.
04:19In this cruel finale, the antagonist shows that nobody is safe.
04:24Number 45, Big Bob, The Hills Have Eyes.
04:28There's nothing more ominous in a horror movie than getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.
04:32When the Carter family ends up in the desert, they struggle with more than food, supplies, and exposure.
04:37You walk out six or seven miles and get back.
04:39I'll walk out as far as the old geezer service station.
04:41But you can't get there and back before dark.
04:44It's only 15 miles back.
04:46Sweetheart, I'll get there about sundown.
04:48A group of killers begins to stalk the heroes and kidnap Bob.
04:52After some brutal work by the villains, the older man ends up crucified before being engulfed in flames.
04:57We can't imagine a worse way to spend your vacation.
05:00When his fellow travelers find him, he's much too weak to recover.
05:04It is such an awful death and aftermath that you almost cannot fathom it.
05:08I need some water.
05:09I need some water. Would you get it, please?
05:11Number 44. Everybody.
05:13The menu.
05:14Julian Slowick goes all out with his fancy meals, picking off his dinner guests until the smoldering finale.
05:21Ralph Fiennes' chef chooses to incorporate the foodies into his final dish.
05:25You represent the ruin of my art and my life.
05:31And now you get to be part of it.
05:35Part of what I hope is my masterpiece.
05:38As the victims accept their fate, they become part of a s'mores experiment with a fiery end.
05:45It's even more unsettling to watch everything slowly burn up around them.
05:48Dressed in marshmallows and chocolate, the customers become ingredients in a dessert for the ages.
05:53I love you all.
05:55We love you, chef!
05:57Their involuntary costumes only add insult to injury.
06:00While parts of this film might have been darkly funny, this conclusion takes our breath away.
06:06If you're eager for more off-the-menu moments in pop culture,
06:09head over to WatchMojo's 24-7 livestream for more excitement.

06:16We must embrace the flame.
06:19Number 43.
06:20The Marauder.
06:21Evil Dead Rise.
06:22Beth and Cassie face off against the Marauder in the climax of Evil Dead Rise,
06:26forcing the heroes to confront their worst fears.
06:29It's coming!
06:31Bridget, Ellie, and Danny combine into a monster that looks to be a formidable villain.
06:36In a parking garage, the heroes fail to escape before their enemy foils their plans.
06:40Beth must save one of her family members from the clutches of pure evil.
06:44With the help of a chainsaw, she forces the three-headed creature into a wood chipper.
06:49Three-eyed guys!
06:52There is more than enough blood for several horror movies in this scene alone.
06:57When one head remains,
06:58the main character decides to perform a finishing move worthy of this gory series.
07:03Number 42.
07:05Paul.
07:05The Blob.
07:06For the remake of a 1950s B-movie classic,
07:09this version of the titular ooze doesn't skimp on the brutality.
07:12The alien substance spreads around a California town with disastrous effects.
07:17I'm at the Arborville Hospital, and an old man's just been killed down here.
07:20You said killed?
07:21Yes, sir.
07:23You sit tight, I'll be right down.
07:25Paul becomes one of the early victims,
07:27coming into contact with the Blob at the hospital.
07:29Consuming an entire body,
07:31the villainous entity does a number on the helpless character.
07:34It absorbs the guy with some detrimental changes to his body chemistry.
07:41The plot might make viewers expect killer jello from outer space,
07:45but it's much more gross than that.
07:47This scene shows you that a campy horror movie can also give you nightmares.
07:52Number 41.
07:53Remick.
07:53Sinners.
07:54After wreaking havoc on a party,
07:56this vampire sets his sights on the last survivors.
07:59I want your stories.
08:01And I want your songs.
08:03And you're gonna have mine.
08:05He and his army have lured out,
08:07attacked, and bitten plenty of the cast by that point.
08:09Smoke and Sammy fend off Remick long enough for the sun to come up.
08:13With the dawn creeping over the horizon,
08:15the villain gets flash-fried with his followers.
08:18The spectacular effects make it look like an excruciatingly painful way to go.
08:22With all of the awful schemes he's gotten up to,
08:25the antagonist still generates a shred of sympathy with this death.
08:29It's such an impactful moment to cap off such a hectic night.
08:32Number 40.
08:34Rhodes.
08:34Day of the Dead.
08:35In this entertaining sequel,
08:37Rhodes is the military commander who pushes people around
08:40and encourages his men to be terrible.
08:42I make the deals around here.
08:45Not you.
08:46The few remaining heroes have to endure his rants,
08:49speeches, and his grim outlook on life.
08:52It's only fitting that he meets his death in a surprising and violent way.
08:56Chased down by undead captive Bub,
08:58the antagonist survives a few gunshots before he's truly cornered.
09:09He then meets his match as a swarm of the undead take him down,
09:13with the results being particularly gruesome.
09:15You might even be scarred for life after watching the man lose his guts.
09:19Number 39.
09:20Laura.
09:21Smile.
09:22Not wasting any time.
09:24This horror movie starts with a chilling opening.
09:27Laura Weaver tries to describe her growing distress to therapist Rose Cotter.
09:30I'm seeing something.
09:34Something no one else can see except for me.
09:39I know how insane that sounds.
09:41I do, but it's...
09:43This thing, I can't explain it.
09:45During the meeting, the patient is inconsolable and starts writhing on the ground.
09:49You're practically stunned at this point, wondering how it'll all turn out.
09:53Weaver appears with a creepy smile on her face, creating the unsettling visual that haunts the rest of the film.
09:59Her last act shows that she's been completely taken over by an elusive and villainous force.
10:04The smile filmmakers create such a strong image here, forcing viewers to reconsider what other horrible things can happen next.
10:11She was convinced that some sort of evil presence was haunting her.
10:17Number 38.
10:18Doctor in the Elevator.
10:20Damien.
10:21Omen 2.
10:21This series about a demonic child likes to send people off in dramatic style.
10:26For the second film, Damien goes to a hospital after a class field trip gone wrong.
10:31There's something here that I just don't understand.
10:33One of the doctors in charge realizes that the child might be more different than the others.
10:38With some vital information to leak, the medical professional boards a hellish elevator.
10:43The character can't do much to save himself after the machine breaks down.
10:46That is where the work of the devil comes in to shake things up.
10:50After a sudden drop, the victim survives only to face the strength of a falling cable.
11:02It is among the more outrageous and gratuitous shots in horror history.
11:06Number 37.
11:08Deaths on the Hill.
11:09The Long Walk.
11:10While this intriguing premise starts like a contest, it quickly devolves into a deadly game of endurance.
11:16The teenagers walk into the night as they reach a steep incline.
11:26Not only do they have to deal with the hill, but the contestants also have to maintain a constant speed.
11:31This feels like one of the most dire scenes in the entire journey considering the difficulty.
11:35With everyone's life on the line, one misstep could be their last.
11:39No, no, no, no, no.
11:40Don't slow down.
11:41Do not slow down.
11:43Keep moving.
11:44The soldiers do not waste time dishing out warnings and taking out the walkers.
11:48As the numbers dwindle, each gunshot rings out with a terrifying flash.
11:53And you can practically feel the survivors' heartbeats.
11:56Number 36.
11:57Jill Tuck.
11:58Saw 3D.
11:59Like every death scene in this series, this one comes with the promise of some disgusting results.
12:04The bear trap kill in Saw 3D is no different.
12:08I'll be looking for you.
12:10Mark Hoffman finds himself in a position to exact revenge on Jill Tuck, with the latter trying to ruin his
12:16life.
12:17Hoffman sets the device before a countdown helps to ramp up the suspense.
12:20Once it goes off, the trap gives new meaning to the idea of a jawbreaker.
12:25The vicious death still makes us squeamish as we consider the same fate.
12:28After so many sequels and spinoffs, this franchise doesn't disappoint with its signature moments and ruthless finishing moves.
12:36Game over.
12:38Number 35.
12:39Allie.
12:40Terrifier 2.
12:41Built around some infamous kill scenes, the Terrifier series relishes the opportunity to push audiences to the limit.
12:48The sequel decides to give this character one of the more epic deaths of the franchise.
12:52Aren't you a little old to be trick-or-treating?
12:58Wait a minute.
12:59Aren't you that guy from the costume shop?
13:02You are.
13:03What are you doing here?
13:05Following a failed attempt to get candy, Art breaks into Allie's house to continue his chaotic murder streak.
13:10This leads to some sharp and cutting moments to say the least.
13:14After conducting some amateur surgery, the clown brings back some bleach and salt to make everything more diabolical.
13:27Many of the more unsightly details will likely leave a bad taste in your mouth.
13:32If you really love these kinds of films, this particular sequence captures your imagination in a terrible way.
13:38Number 34.
13:39Nick.
13:40Bone Tomahawk.
13:41Combining the look of a western with some horror elements, Bone Tomahawk gives viewers a jolt of extreme violence.
13:48How many of them do you think there are?
13:49It won't matter.
13:50You have no chance against any number of them.
13:52Sheriff Hunt and his rescue party head into dangerous territory as they search for a group of cannibals.
13:57Once he and other heroes become prisoners, they witness Deputy Nick's extended death without being able to stop it.
14:04Nick.
14:04Wake up.
14:05Don't do this.
14:06Don't do this.
14:07Please.
14:09Nick.
14:11Wake up.
14:12The director forces viewers to see the long and painful process.
14:15Nick's screams are one thing, but the body horror certainly makes you want to look away.
14:20It is a ghastly series of visuals that makes any other cowboy movie look tame.
14:25Number 33.
14:26Father Damien Karras.
14:28The Exorcist.
14:29While trying to exorcise a demon, Father Lancaster Marin and Father Damien Karras must dive deep to save Regan McNeil.
14:35I cast you out.
14:38The older priest suffers a heart attack and leaves his younger partner alone with the possessed girl.
14:43Karras then grapples with the villain, pleading with the antagonist in one final confrontation.
14:48The weight of the entire plot hinges on this compelling and vicious fight.
14:52As the religious man gets taken over, he makes his last sentient choice to launch out of a window.
14:59It is a harrowing drop that shows how far he's prepared to go to save McNeil.
15:03For this classic horror movie's climax, audiences discover the brutal reality of an exorcism.
15:09Number 32.
15:10The Elevator Massacre.
15:12The Cabin in the Woods.
15:14Discovering that they're being watched, the heroes of The Cabin in the Woods enter the facility where a secret organization
15:20conducts their tests.
15:21You shouldn't be here.
15:25This should have gone differently.
15:27Ended more quickly.
15:30I can only imagine your pain and confusion.
15:33Marty and Dana find themselves with no other option than to hit a shiny red button.
15:38With that simple act, the two let out a wide array of monsters, creatures, and other horror movie villains.
15:44The shocking climax features more blood than you might have imagined possible.
15:48As the antagonists explore the facility, they find more staff members to feast on with reckless abandon.
15:54This entire sequence could be considered the film's most over-the-top moment, if not for the very end.
16:01Kill him.
16:02Number 31.
16:03Gladys.
16:04Weapons.
16:05With her wig and clown makeup, Aunt Gladys became something of a sensation after her debut in Weapons.
16:10I told you she's just fine.
16:12Don't worry.
16:15Alex.
16:17Now don't be rude.
16:20Why don't you sit down at the table because I'm making dinner?
16:22Her menacing plans unravel as amateur investigators discover her hiding place.
16:27After turning the tables on the villain, a group of kids turns Gladys into a target.
16:31The ensuing chase blends terror, dark humor, and extreme violence.
16:36Once the children knock down the antagonist, they do not waste time tearing the evil woman apart.
16:42There are a few quick shots that push the limits of good taste.
16:48Finally receiving her comeuppance, the witch turns into a complete mess that will ruin your appetite.
16:54Number 30.
16:55Tina.
16:56A Nightmare on Elm Street.
16:57In this scene, Tina makes one of the more common mistakes in horror films.
17:01She investigates something in her dream despite the possible dangers ahead.
17:06Please God.
17:07This is God.
17:15As the viewer, you're probably thinking that she should go back inside and lock the door.
17:19The tension is palpable as you fear the worst.
17:22In a haunting image, Freddy appears with his signature blades.
17:26It's even more frightening knowing that she can't run away.
17:29Get me!
17:36In the real world, the character writhes around in bed before being slashed and bloodied.
17:41The shot of her going up the wall is even more horrifying.
17:44Once again, A Nightmare on Elm Street makes you worry about ever going to sleep again.
17:49Nancy said they'd had a fight.
17:51It wasn't that serious.
17:53Maybe you don't think murder is serious.
17:55Number 29.
17:56Everyone in the Car.
17:58The Mist.
17:59Defying expectations.
18:00The Mist is a Stephen King adaptation that doesn't mind giving you a bummer ending.
18:04While the survivors contemplate their future, they realize that their chances seem slim.
18:09They decide to make a bold choice to avoid the enemy creatures.
18:16It's one thing for these characters to die this way, but the eventual reveal makes it all the more heartbreaking.
18:22A tense moment leads David to realize that he should have waited longer.
18:25Come on!
18:27Come on!
18:28Come on!
18:30Not only does the hero have to deal with his actions, he has to live on knowing that he made
18:34an irreversible mistake.
18:36Leaving the protagonist shattered, the conclusion asks deep questions before scaring the audience with real-world implications.
18:58Some bullies think they can get away with anything.
19:01In this case, Brandon doesn't know what Megan's reaction will be.
19:04The frightening doll grabs the kid's ear before making him run.
19:07Let go!
19:08You need to learn some manners, Brandon.
19:11You know what happens to bad boys that don't mind their manners?
19:15They grow up to be bad men.
19:18Stalking him through the trees, the robot causes Brandon to freak out and fall down a hill.
19:23He then ends up in the way of an oncoming car.
19:30It's a sudden and disturbing scene that reminds you of the enemy's true power.
19:34Even with everything he had done to Katie, his death still feels a bit cruel.
19:39It also comes with the perpetual fears of large vehicles and homicidal machines.
19:44Obviously, what happened is a terrible, terrible tragedy.
19:49But just know that that boy is in a better place now.
19:58In this remake, filmmaker David Cronenberg goes the extra mile to show you what a human fly could be.
20:04The hero, Seth Brundle, becomes crossed with an insect and suffers the consequences.
20:14His deformed self crumbles until it's hard to watch.
20:17Not only is he creepy on his own, he also receives a brutal send-off.
20:22The only person who understands him ends up putting him down, armed with a gun.
20:27She does so knowing that things won't get any better for the scientist.
20:35It's a multi-layered and grisly scene that makes you wonder what you'd do in the same situation.
20:40With unbelievable makeup, this movie goes to extreme lengths to show you scary images.
20:58Even in the daylight, Ari Aster proves that he can make a scary movie.
21:01The main crew visits a Swedish commune where odd rituals take a violent turn.
21:06Jumping from a cliff, the village elders put their bodies on the line for tradition.
21:12It's a shocking moment that foreshadows the rest of the trip.
21:15Not only do they fall from great heights, they can be finished off by other means too.
21:29It's a distressing and harrowing surprise that makes you anxious for the rest of the film.
21:34If you don't like heights, this scene will be even worse for you.
21:45Number 25, Neil Howey, the Wicker Man.
21:48Through many twists and turns, Sergeant Neil Howey finds himself the victim of a pagan cult.
21:54They end up trapping him and putting him inside the titular structure.
22:07Having been rendered helpless, the hero can only suffer as he's burned alive.
22:12It's a distressing scene that depicts a cruel punishment.
22:15Not only that, the slow-burning fire takes its time before consuming the structure.
22:28We can't imagine that there are many worse ways to go out.
22:31It's even worse knowing that the locals think highly of the ceremony.
22:35With the witnesses celebrating, this decidedly evil death comes with some powerful imagery.
22:48Number 24, Keith, Barbarian.
22:51Underneath an Airbnb, Keith disappears into the maze-like basement.
22:55Keith!
23:01Come up here, Keith!
23:03He then re-emerges after Tess finds him in a tunnel.
23:06While he might be safe for a moment, the main villain has other plans.
23:10Only a small amount of light picks up the horror behind the two characters.
23:14Ready to take charge, the mother grabs the man's head and slams it in gruesome fashion.
23:19This only makes the audience more unsettled in a cramped and darkened space.
23:23With so many mysteries left unsolved, this twist might be too much for some people to watch.
23:29What?
23:30Someone bit me.
23:37This all leads to a cliffhanger, leaving you in a state of abject terror.
23:42Tess, we have to come this way!
23:43Someone's dead!
23:45I'm not going back!
23:48Number 23, The Guards.
23:50The Silence of the Lambs.
23:52Waiting for the perfect moment, Hannibal Lecter outsmarts his prison guards.
23:56He subdues both of them in a particularly violent way.
23:59One gets handcuffed while the villain bites the other's face.
24:10Lecter relishes in the kill, throwing a baton around like he's conducting an orchestra.
24:15The result brings about one of the film's better twists.
24:18Outsmarting the authorities, the evil doctor escapes their clutches by taking a new face as a disguise.
24:24Both disfigured bodies are left behind while the wanted man rides away in an ambulance.
24:28Lecter's guard, Sarge.
24:30Prisoner is missing.
24:31Boyle's gun is gone, Sargeant.
24:33Repeat, Lecter's missing and armed.
24:36Not only is his breakout full of gross surprises, the murderer rides off to terrify more people.
24:42I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner.
24:48Number 22, Passengers, Ghost Ship.
24:51At the start of this horror movie, ship passengers enjoy music and dancing.
24:55This all changes when someone decides to adjust a metal cable.
24:59When the equipment breaks, it slices through the dance floor.
25:11It's a disgusting and bizarre image, leaving viewers stunned as they see the carnage.
25:16You might have to look away once you realize the movie doesn't hold back.
25:20It's such an awful way to die, but it also happens so quickly.
25:24To let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go, let
25:30it go, let it go.
25:31Without much time to react, the victims suffer a terrible death at the hands of a razor-sharp obstacle.
25:36You might think twice about ever dancing on an ocean liner after this one.
25:43Number 21, Dick Halloran, The Shining.
25:46When things go wrong at the Overlook Hotel, Dick Halloran returns to investigate.
25:51Anybody here?
25:52The audience likely wants him to turn around and avoid the chaos.
25:57With Jack Torrance loose in the building, you worry for Halloran as he walks into a trap.
26:01The character walks down a hallway before an intense jump scare.
26:09Torrance throws out his axe, taking care of the innocent man with a swift blow.
26:14The slow burn movie builds to a scary moment before taking care of another victim.
26:18Frightening in every sense.
26:20This eerie scene from The Shining lingers long after it's over.
26:30Number 20, Jupe and the Spectators.
26:33Nope.
26:34Jordan Peele's third horror film contains his scariest death sequence yet, and that's saying something.
26:40Jupe runs a theme park called Jupiter's Claim, and he hopes to exploit the alien for profit and fame.
26:46He puts on a show for dozens of visitors, who all hope to catch a glimpse of the predator.
26:50So as I said, in just under an hour, the Star Lasso experience is going to change you.
26:59Well, they get a far more personal glimpse than they were expecting.
27:02The alien swoops down and devours everyone, and they are slowly digested alive.
27:08The sequence is horrendous, utilizing realistic screams of panic and claustrophobic cinematography to its advantage.
27:15Their remains are then poured over the Haywood house.
27:19It is an unforgettable visual ripped straight from a nightmare.
27:30Coming nearly 20 years after the original, The Exorcist 3 is a worthy follow-up, with one doozy of a
27:37jump scare.
27:37Tell the press that I am the Gemini, Lieutenant.
27:44Final warning.
27:45In the movie's most famous sequence, viewers watch a nurse do her rounds in a hospital.
27:50It's a very domestic scene, and it lulls audiences into a false sense of peace and security.
27:56About the time we ask ourselves, why are we watching this?
27:59A cloaked figure appears from a locked door and chases the nurse off-screen.
28:08It's a brilliantly staged scene, featuring a static camera and nearly a minute of silence before it suddenly zooms in
28:15with an awful screech.
28:17The contrast is pulled off amazingly well, and is sure to give viewers a chilling jolt of adrenaline.
28:24Number 18. Glenn Lance. A Nightmare on Elm Street.
28:27Johnny Depp made one heck of a movie debut, and he went out in a geyser of blood.
28:32Depp plays Glenn Lance, the boyfriend of protagonist Nancy Thompson.
28:37The point is that everyone has a bad dream once in a while. It's no biggie.
28:41Yeah, next time you have one, just tell yourself that's all it is, right while you're having it, you know?
28:44Once you do that, you wake right up. At least it works for me.
28:48Glenn falls asleep watching TV and becomes another victim of Freddy Krueger,
28:52who warps reality itself and pulls Glenn into his own bed.
28:56What happens next we can't even show here, but it sure leaves one heck of a mess.
29:01The image of the blood geyser is unforgettable, and one of the most iconic in horror movie history.
29:07But what makes this death scene work so well is that it leaves a lot to the imagination.
29:12Where was Glenn taken?
29:14What did Freddy do to generate that obscene amount of blood?
29:18Maybe it's best that we don't know.
29:20What the hell did that to Tennant?
29:23I don't know.
29:25What's the coroner got to say?
29:27It's been a giant puking since he saw it.
29:29Number 17.
29:30Timothy Young, Saw 3.
29:32It's really saying something that in the dozens of gruesome deaths that this series is known for,
29:37this is the one that has us turning our heads in disgust.
29:40A man whose life also changed the day your son died.
29:48That day he made a terrible mistake.
29:51Timothy Young hit and killed Dylan while driving drunk, and was targeted by Jigsaw in response.
29:57He's placed in the rack, a malicious device that slowly twists his limbs.
30:02Actor Oompo Kuwaho does a fantastic job conveying the unimaginable pain that Timothy is going through,
30:07and those snapping sounds are enough to make anyone wince.
30:10Fantastic acting mixes with vulgar sound design and a depraved imagination
30:15to create one of the scariest horror movie deaths of all time.
30:26Number 16.
30:27Beth O'Brien, The Descent.
30:29This claustrophobic horror movie from Neil Marshall concerns Sarah Carter,
30:33a woman mourning the loss of her husband and daughter.
30:36Oh, come here.
30:38Let me look at you.
30:41Everything's going to be fine.
30:42Better.
30:43It's going to be great.
30:44To help get her mind off the tragedy, Sarah goes spelunking with her friends, including Beth O'Brien.
30:49The group is accosted by a band of bloodthirsty creatures inside the cave,
30:53and when Beth accidentally scares Juno, she is struck in the neck with a pickaxe.
30:58Juno flees in a panic, but the grievously injured Beth is later found by Sarah,
31:03who euthanizes her with a rock.
31:05It's an extremely difficult scene to watch, with Beth bloody and weakened and begging Sarah to end her life.
31:11Both the performances and the makeup are top-notch, conveying a palpable sense of panic.
31:24Who knew that John Landis of Animal House could direct one of the scariest movies of the 80s?
31:29An American Werewolf in London starts with Jack and David being hunted on the Yorkshire moors.
31:44After a false jump scare gets the audience on edge, Jack is attacked and brutally mauled by the werewolf.
31:50Where are we going?
31:51I don't know. I'll tell you when we get there.
31:52Okay, because...
31:56You really scared me, you shithead.
31:58Are you going to help me up or what?
32:02What makes the scene so horrifying is its realism.
32:05Jack's blood-curdling screams are full of convincing pain and fear,
32:10and his body is completely torn to shreds, leaving his corpse a bloody mess.
32:15The scene plays on our primal fears of large and dangerous creatures,
32:18and it's arguably one of the scariest animal attack scenes, supernatural or otherwise, in movie history.
32:24Number 14. The Highway Pile-Up. Final Destination 2.
32:28An entire generation of people grew up fearing logging trucks, and it's all thanks to this movie.
32:34Oh my god. What?
32:37There's going to be a huge accident. We're all going to die. I just saw it.
32:40Each final destination begins with a scene of carnage, and this one involves a highway pile-up.
32:46A large log falls off the truck and slams into a police car, killing state trooper Thomas Burke instantly.
32:52All hell then breaks loose, with people getting crushed by motorcycles, run over by transport trucks,
32:58and blown up in cinematic explosions.
33:00What makes this scene work so well are not the gruesome visuals, although those certainly help,
33:06but the relative realism.
33:08This scene is just exaggerating a very real fear into cinematic language.
33:12There's going to be a huge pile-up. I saw it. There were bodies everywhere. There were logs. I saw
33:21it. It just happened.
33:22Number 13. Frank Cotton. Hellraiser.
33:25With a title like Hellraiser, you know you're getting into some pretty gnarly territory.
33:29We just didn't initially know how gnarly.
33:32Oh, no tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.
33:37Frank Cotton is a hedonist who meets his end at the hands of the Cenobites.
33:41They attack him with chains, all of which pierce themselves into his skin, and, well, it's not pretty, let's just
33:48say that.
33:48Props have to be given to the makeup department here.
33:51The visuals of Frank's demise are absolutely grotesque, and they're not ones to leave the mind anytime soon.
33:58In fact, this death scene is an all-time horror classic, known far and wide for its terrible brutality.
34:05I'm going to live and you're going to help me, yes?
34:07Yes. They'll never find us. Not in the whole wide world.
34:15Number 12. Katie Embry.
34:17The Ring.
34:18Crafting a memorable opening scene is an art form, and The Ring has one of the all-time best.
34:24It follows Katie and Becca, two teenage girls who gossip about a spooky urban legend.
34:28Your phone rings. Someone knows you've watched it. And what they say is, you will die in seven days.
34:39Turns out it's not such a legend after all. Katie has already watched the tape, and is subsequently killed by
34:45an unseen force.
34:46The entire scene is a masterful bit of tension building.
34:50We, along with the characters, slowly begin to realize that the legend is real, and that these girls are in
34:56incredible danger.
34:58And by keeping the death off-screen, it allows our wicked imaginations to flourish.
35:03That is, until we see the aftermath in a jump-scare edit for the ages.
35:08I saw her face.
35:10Number 11. Keith Jennings. The Omen.
35:13It doesn't get any better than 70s horror.
35:15Not only were these films constantly breaking new ground, they also still hold up incredibly well to this day.
35:21It's not a child.
35:22How can he know that? Maybe he's wrong.
35:25It's insane.
35:27I won't have anything to do with murdering a little boy.
35:30He's not responsible.
35:32I won't do it.
35:35While attempting to retrieve a pair of discarded daggers, Keith is decapitated by a pane of glass,
35:40and his head spirals in the air before landing by his feet.
35:44The suddenness of the death, the gore, and the eerie music combined to make this one of the most memorable
35:50death scenes in cinema.
35:51At the time, this was one of the most violent things ever seen in a mainstream Hollywood film,
35:55and it helped pave the way for a wider acceptance of violence and gore.
36:02Number 10. Casey Becker. Scream.
36:06Why do you want to know my name?
36:07I want to know who I'm looking at.
36:11Scream helped revitalize the slasher.
36:13And this scene in particular was a major reason for the renewed interest.
36:17The opening of the movie famously sees Drew Barrymore's Casey Becker taunted by a mysterious and creepy caller.
36:22Some kind of joke?
36:24More of a game, really.
36:29Can you handle that?
36:32Bloody.
36:33The calls begin rather playfully before spiraling into depravity and horror as Casey's boyfriend is murdered,
36:39and Casey becomes the subject of malicious taunts.
36:42Oh, God!
36:44I wouldn't do that if I were you.
36:46Where are you?
36:46She's then stabbed to death and hung from a tree for her parents to see.
36:50The progression of the phone calls,
36:52the sense of isolation and hopelessness that the scene conveys,
36:55and the violence of the murder all combine to create one of the most memorable opening sequences
36:59in horror movie history.
37:04Number 9, Kirk, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
37:08Hello?
37:13Is anybody home?
37:14Casey's death might have reinvigorated the slasher genre,
37:17but Kirk's death arguably started it.
37:19After entering a creepy house,
37:21Kirk is suddenly taken out by Leatherface
37:23in one of the most surprising and scariest deaths in horror.
37:26Leatherface scares both Kirk and the audience by coming out of nowhere,
37:30and the sheer brutality of the hit and Kirk's twitching body leaves you reeling.
37:36The scene ends with Leatherface slamming the door,
37:39serving as an ominous exclamation point to the horror we just witnessed.
37:43It's both shocking and shockingly realistic,
37:45and it helps set the grim and violent tone
37:48for one of the most controversial movies ever made.
37:53Number 8, Dr. Copper, the Thing.
37:56While underappreciated in its day,
37:58The Thing is now rightfully regarded as a classic,
38:01and it's all thanks to astonishingly creative scenes like this.
38:05I've got to breathe in!
38:06One time attack.
38:10Get him in here, and bring the others.
38:12Copper is the resident doctor,
38:14and it's up to him to treat the dying Norris.
38:17Unfortunately for him,
38:18Norris has recently been assimilated by The Thing.
38:21During the medical procedure,
38:23Norris' stomach suddenly opens up,
38:25becomes a giant mouth with sharp teeth,
38:28and chomps down on Copper's arms.
38:30Copper quickly dies of blood loss,
38:32and the other characters,
38:34not to mention the viewers,
38:35are left in a completely flabbergasted state of mind.
38:38When it comes to the greatest scenes in horror cinema,
38:41it's hard not to think about the man-eating stomach.
38:44Number 7, Charlie Graham, Hereditary.
38:48Ari Aster's film gets a lot of love within the horror community,
38:51both for its frightening bits of horror,
38:52and its heavy themes regarding depression and grief.
38:55My mom died a week ago,
38:57so I'm just here for trying it.
39:01I have a lot of resistance to things like this.
39:04Both are encapsulated in the death of Charlie Graham.
39:07Charlie goes into anaphylactic shock,
39:09and leans her head out the car window to get some air,
39:12only to slam into the telephone pole.
39:14The shocking death is completely unexpected,
39:17and the reactionary performance from Alex Wolfe
39:20is nothing short of superb.
39:22As if watching him in denial isn't painful enough,
39:25viewers are then treated to the unspeakable aftermath,
39:28and the pained shrieks of Charlie's grieving mother.
39:30And I just want to die!
39:36It is one of the most memorable death scenes of the modern era,
39:40thanks to some stellar acting and creative editing.
39:43Number 6, Judith Myers, Halloween.
39:46We watch from the perspective of an unknown assailant,
39:49as he stalks two teenagers from outside the house.
39:52We are alone, aren't we?
39:54Michael's around someplace.
39:56We're then forced to witness the brutal murder of the woman
39:58through the eyes of her killer,
40:00making us feel complicit in her death,
40:02almost as if we're the ones carrying out
40:04this horrible display of violence.
40:08The movie then goes in a completely unexpected direction,
40:11when the killer is revealed to be
40:12the six-year-old brother of the victim.
40:14The shot of the emotionless Michael
40:16standing amidst his shocked and horrified parents
40:18is now an iconic piece of horror imagery.
40:21It showed us that psychopaths can be anywhere,
40:23and be anyone.
40:25Michael?
40:30Number 5, Georgie Denbrough, It.
40:33Hiya, Georgie.
40:34Now this is how you open a horror movie.
40:37While this scene was one of the miniseries most famous,
40:39the 2017 film turned the horror up to 11.
40:43Pennywise is made much more animalistic,
40:45as he gleefully toys with Georgie,
40:47staring at him with violent hunger in his eyes
40:50and drool on his chin.
40:51It's immediately clear that something isn't right.
40:54You know, aside from there being a clown in the sewer.
40:56And then,
40:57he proceeds to bite Georgie's arm off
41:00and drag him into the sewer
41:01as the young boy attempts to crawl away,
41:03crying for help,
41:05sans arm.
41:06It's a terrific and terrifying establishment
41:09of the brutality of Pennywise.
41:15Number 4, Heather, The Blair Witch Project.
41:18I'm scared to close my eyes.
41:21I'm scared to open them.
41:23Love it or hate it,
41:24there is no denying that this film
41:26has one stunner of an ending.
41:28Heather and Mike are separated
41:29while investigating a creepy-as-all-hell house
41:32in the middle of the woods.
41:33Judge.
41:35Judge.
41:36Judge.
41:38Heather eventually finds Mike facing a wall
41:41before she's attacked from behind
41:43by an unseen force.
41:44The events leading up to the death
41:46are scary enough,
41:47like the abandoned house
41:48and Josh's far-off cries.
41:49But it's the images of Mike in the corner
41:51and Heather dropping the camera
41:52that really stick in our minds.
41:54It's a bleak ending,
41:55and its refusal to answer questions
41:58makes it all the more unsettling.
41:59It leaves you and your imagination
42:01to fill in the blanks.
42:08Number 3, Chrissy Watkins, Jaws.
42:11What's your name again?
42:12Chrissy.
42:14Where are we going?
42:16Swimming.
42:17Chrissy's death is arguably
42:19the best opening scene
42:20in horror movie history.
42:22Susan Baccellini's acting
42:23is simply superb,
42:24as she successfully sells
42:26every last scream,
42:28gasp, and plead.
42:34Steven Spielberg also made
42:36a fantastic decision
42:37in never showing us the shark.
42:39We watch in sheer horror
42:41as this woman is dragged around
42:42by an unseen entity,
42:44again allowing our imaginations
42:46to run wild.
42:52The scene also ends
42:54on a spectacular note,
42:55as the horrifying music
42:56abruptly ends
42:57as Chrissy is dragged under mid-scream,
42:59leaving us with the seemingly peaceful
43:01and calming sounds of the ocean.
43:03We knew better, though,
43:05and it made us
43:05never want to go swimming again.
43:08Number 2, Marion Crane, Psycho.
43:11Alfred Hitchcock certainly knew
43:13how to craft a scene.
43:14Marion's death is perhaps
43:15the most famous death scene
43:17in movie history,
43:17and it helped to usher in
43:19a new era of violence in cinema.
43:21The violence was unlike anything
43:22seen in film at the time,
43:24and the piercing music
43:25and frantic editing maximized
43:26the effectiveness of the horror.
43:31It bombards the viewer
43:33from every sense and angle,
43:34and it makes us feel
43:35as if we're being attacked ourselves.
43:37While Halloween put us
43:39in the mind of a killer,
43:40Psycho puts us in the mind
43:41of the killed,
43:42and it's one of the most horrifying things
43:45you could possibly imagine.

44:13And with this one scene,
44:15sci-fi horror was changed forever.
44:18In it,
44:19Kane gives birth to an alien,
44:21and it's one of cinema's
44:22most disgusting and scariest moments.
44:27The way the scene progresses
44:28from jovial dinner
44:29to unimaginable nightmare
44:31is genius,
44:32and the effects of the alien
44:33bursting out of John Hurt's chest
44:35are still effectively revolting today.
44:38The fast-paced editing
44:39and genuine shock of the actors
44:41help place us in the surreal moment,
44:43while the practical effects
44:44make it feel oh-so-very real.
44:47It's now rightfully regarded
44:48as one of the most memorable
44:50movie scenes of all time,
44:51and arguably the scariest.
