00:17scott heads or tails heads it is a tail i will receive let's go all right now this is a
00:27michigan
00:27michigan state version i am speaking for michigan and gator is speaking for michigan state the ground
00:34rules have been established doug you are first kyle whittingham what are you most looking forward
00:40to seeing under his watch and his influence onto the program quiet season quiet season off the field
00:46very quiet silent even off the field uh but kyle whittingham teams at utah well conditioned and the
00:53players have talked about their improved stamina uh stamina they are disciplined as you look at
00:59historically kyle whittingham utah teams are usually in the top third often in the top 20 in the country
01:04and penalties committed good play in the trenches has been a staple of kyle whittingham's teams
01:10and the question is will it all translate from day one he's brought some players with him uh michigan
01:16wasn't a particularly highly penalized team a year ago so you would think that that's going to
01:20continue but they're introducing a lot of new stuff so they're going to be a lot of kids with
01:24their heads swimming a little bit but um yeah fundamentally solid well conditioned
01:31and completely all of their their news is made in the sports pages that's that's what i want to see
01:37from day one and kyle whittingham team gator for you and pat fitzgerald what are you looking forward
01:41to most at michigan state i think what we're all excited about is that michigan state will finally
01:46have some defensive identity i mean pat fitzgerald was a stud linebacker at northwestern back in the
01:51day when he went to northwestern to coach that team was tough to play against they would you know
01:56get in a slog and it was uh it's it's something would be welcomed here for the spartans attention
02:01to detail is something else that he's known for uh that's going to be great that means that you're
02:06going to be fundamentally sound so hopefully there are fewer mistakes i think things get simplified
02:11and it's it might be a little monotonous and boring to watch at first but i don't care if it
02:17means it's a you're going to get to lower scoring games and a chance to win that's what they need
02:21and
02:22it may be above all else you've got a coach who's got something to prove and he's a coach that
02:27is not
02:28afraid to show emotion which is something that has been missing from michigan state for a long long time
02:33i like that out of pat fitzgerald sounds like you both said boring in your answers but boring but good
02:39in a good way right yeah uh gator which transfer do you think will make the biggest impact this
02:45season for mmsu for the spartans i think it's gonna be the running back transfer from yukon cam edwards
02:50this is a guy who in three years had over 3 000 scrimmage yards and 30 touchdowns including over 1200
02:56yards rushing last season to go with 15 scores uh hopefully this will give a similar lift to what
03:03kenneth walker gave when he transferred into michigan state from white forest obviously that
03:08re-generized re-energized and revitalized michigan state uh for a short period of time
03:14but it was a fantastic season i don't know if this season is going to be as good as that
03:18one was
03:18but cam edwards can be very good for this team bunch of candidates here for michigan uh chris bracy
03:24at safety has been very impressive came over from memphis twitchy and makes plays in the secondary
03:30but it feels like the runaway answer for this one is wide receiver jj buchanan who came from utah
03:35at times during fall practice he's been unguardable the 50 50 ball the contested catch
03:40kyle winningham says he's good as anyone he's ever been around he's got size he can run he can jump
03:46he's tough he can block he competes in all aspects of the receiver position and the hands man the hands
03:54he's got great hands so i think jj buchanan will be the top transfer coming in this year
04:01wide receiver for michigan and depending on how you feel about it this is a question all college
04:05fan base is going to be asking themselves every year because of the transfer portal and nil and
04:09all that stuff and just new landscape of what kind of impact these new players can make right away on
04:13your team yep all right doug what area does your qb most need to improve on in 2026 so the
04:20new
04:20offensive coordinator um jason beck has said some really interesting things one of them is don't
04:26try and be superman okay you just let the game come to you uh they like his decision making so
04:32far
04:32through fall camp uh they talk about every rep of every practice gets graded and they want him to
04:39be focused in on everything but they also want to let him play too they want him to be too
04:43mechanical
04:44they think he has a better pocket presence kyle winningham keeps talking about the clock in his head
04:48and there were times last year where bryce would kind of break down and throw off the back foot
04:55they say in practice he's not doing it and they've got him standing in the pocket delivering the football
05:03the way you're supposed to but they all admit becca said it winning emis said it we'll see what happens
05:08when we go live it's one thing to do it in practice you got to do it on game day
05:13but uh he feels better
05:15about his offensive line and his pass catchers so um but we'll see we'll see when he hits the field
05:20for alessio milivojevich michigan state i think it's about pocket awareness he was sacked 16 times
05:27last season and he did not play the full season also had minus 59 yards rushing hopefully better
05:35pass protection is going to help out but it really it's going to be the experience that he has because
05:39it was kind of a baptism by fire last year when he was thrown i was thrown out there but
05:43he survived it he actually completed 64 of his passes he had 10 touchdowns and only three picks
05:49he clearly has arm talent there's a lot to like with this guy and he's very tough which i know
05:54that
05:54pat Fitzgerald's going to like um but a year under his belt now that he's got that out of the
06:00way
06:00i i think it's going to bode well for him plus he knows that he's the starting quarterback there's
06:05not competition for that he is the guy so i think there's plenty of room for him to improve
06:09and that experience is going to be the biggest factor sometimes in college football you can
06:13hide your quarterback play with the style of football you play you know are you trying to
06:17enforce on the other team i don't think so with michigan mission state those two guys are going
06:21to be focal points of the team and they're going to i think decide on how good they'll be in
06:25the
06:25conference this year all right what position group do you think makes the biggest step forward
06:31gator from msu this year i think we're the spartans is going to start with an offensive line it's not
06:35just because that's what i want to make the biggest impact but i think it has to they've got
06:40a bunch of transfers out there four seniors and a sophomore on that offensive line they're led by
06:45the transfers ben murkowski and trent fraley uh fraley for no dak state and uh murkowski comes from
06:52uh yukon and murkowski is thought of as being a very very nice pickup in the transfer portal one of
06:57the
06:57best offensive linemen out there that should help anchor that spartans offensive line it has got to be
07:03better i mentioned earlier about needing to protect the quarterback uh milivojevich was sacked 16 times
07:08well you know they the quarterback position overall was sacked a ton last year they've got to be better
07:14at protecting the quarterback and i think having these uh three high profile transfers plus they
07:19have a fourth who's starting that was a transfer before and that sophomore that's going to help out
07:24and hopefully uh they'll open up some lanes in the running game for for the aforementioned cam
07:29edwards to just run wild for michigan uh the offensive line will also be improved the michigan
07:35fan shield which uh should feel pretty good about that but there is a position that last year really
07:39undermined this team with drops bad routes and even tipping plays and that's wide receiver uh micah
07:46simon is a super energetic young coach andrew marsh was a freshman all-american he got better as the
07:53year went on i mentioned jj buchanan another year of maturation for guys like kendrick bell and
07:59channing goodwin and i really like the true freshman travis johnson saw him in practice uh very
08:04impressive watch for him number 13 and a couple of four stars coming in uh freshman selesi moa who's
08:11one of the best athletes in the recruiting world uh you know just what position was he going to play
08:15he's going to play wide receiver michigan and a four-star texas transfer named jamie french
08:19could be in the mix as well it's if you go back and look at the number of drops a
08:24year ago
08:24it was disturbing and it really undermined uh the michigan offense i think the wide receiver
08:30position will be the most improved position on the team
08:36well doug what position group worries you the most though so there's one position group that has a
08:41real lack of experience and at least lack of experience at the at the power football level
08:48and that is linebacker they do have a transfer nathaniel staling comes from north dakota state
08:53and i would be stunned if he doesn't start he could answer a lot of questions at linebacker and
08:58then there's a lot of youthful candidates uh troy bulls is a really good player and he should be he's
09:04a coach's son his dad coaches tampa uh chase taylor young linebacker with a lot of promise and max
09:09alford a transfer from byu i mean there's a lot of guys in the mix there but not a lot
09:14of experience
09:14in big 10 level football so that's that's an area that they're going to need those guys to grow up
09:20quickly for me at michigan state i'm most concerned about the defensive end the edge rush position
09:26because it's it's just something that michigan state hasn't had and it feels like forever uh
09:31they're they're high on the transfer kenny sores jr who comes in from uh north carolina state and also
09:37played northwestern uh he's been named a captain but they haven't gotten this right in the past they
09:43need to be able to have consistent pressure on the quarterback to have any kind of hope this year
09:47for that defense to just kind of catch their breath state at times looks like they can stop the run
09:52just
09:53fine and they've got some experience with the linebacker position which is good but the defensive
09:57end position is one that they they've consistently invested in the transfer portal uh over the years
10:03and just it hasn't paid off is this going to be the year that pays off
10:11all right gator when it's all said and done record wise what's the floor for msu and what's
10:15the ceiling i think the floor for michigan state is four i think there's a base four games that they
10:21should win um but there's so much unknown right we don't we got a new coach we got new players
10:28um the schedule a typical big big 10 schedule normally you'd breathe easy with this one from
10:34michigan state because you're not playing ohio state you're not playing penn state there's no
10:38usc on the mix but you do have oregon you do have michigan and you've got notre dame in a
10:43non-conference game so that's tough i like the ceiling at because there's an unknown factor i'm
10:49going to put it at eight because i don't know how good rutgers is going to be you know because
10:53rutgers has improved over the years i don't know what to expect out of washington there's so much
10:57attrition year to year and with college football with the turnover in your roster i mean some teams
11:04like michigan state have 50 new players and some teams will have 30 new players i don't i don't know
11:09what to expect i'm going to believe that kind of eight and that's probably very lofty but you asked
11:13for a ceiling i think that's a ceiling uh for michigan i'm going the floor is seven and five
11:18and that's implying they lose all the big ones oklahoma indiana oregon ohio state and mix in another
11:22loss uh the ceiling i think is probably 10 and 2 which would likely get michigan into the playoff
11:28but i say this every year about michigan teams one of the baseline goals is to get to the last
11:33saturday with the big 10 championship on the line and in in some ways it's kind of amazing that last
11:39year's team accomplished that uh but that's that's what i would say is the floor and that's what i would
11:45say is the ceiling thank you guys i just want to remind you the great michael jordan said the ceiling
11:49is the roof so that is always the ceiling if you ask me excellent point and there it is that
