00:03Well, we're pretty happy to finally be able to show off this little Parma wallaby.
00:07We've had her in the nursery for a number of weeks, but she's been in the back room
00:12and we're finally able to bring her out where everybody can see her.
00:15Well, Parma wallabies are the smallest of all of the kangaroo species.
00:20They actually weigh only about 5 kilograms or 11 pounds when they're full grown.
00:25And when this little baby came to us, she had been ejected from her mother's pouch.
00:30And she was in stable, but not great condition.
00:34She was really dirty and she was cold.
00:36And she was transferred immediately from grounds in the morning to our veterinary hospital
00:43where our veterinarian started her on antibiotics, fluids, and warmed her up.
00:47And then she was immediately brought to us to the nursery for hand rearing.
00:51She was only 51 grams when we received her and that's by far the smallest little marsupial
00:57that we've ever been successful in hand rearing.
01:00We're grateful to have had such a wonderful experience to get all the experience to know how to hand raise
01:05one
01:06from that unformed a stage because there's some very specialized care that has to go on in order to save
01:12them.
01:12They're born only the size of a kidney bean and they crawl up into the mother's pouch where they continue
01:17to develop.
01:18And so when you hand rear them, it makes their neonatal period very long and we have to simulate the
01:25pouch environment.
01:26We also have to feed them a special formula.
01:29We have to make them an artificial pouch.
01:31We have to keep them warm and moist and they have very delicate skin which must be maintained in a
01:36certain way.
01:36These pouches are made of special materials and in such a way so that the little wallaby feels safe and
01:45it keeps the wallaby warm
01:47and in a dark environment that simulates the pouch.
01:50Little Tinka has used these pouches throughout her life and most of them are pretty much worn out.
01:55So we're looking to replace them with nice fresh new pouches that we can use for both Tinka and other
02:01marsupials that we might receive.
