Spirogyra — Bells, Boots And Shambles 1973 (UK, Progressive, Folk Rock)
After the release of their second album, Spirogyra's lineup was again reduced to a duo, only this time Barbara became Martin's main partner (or rather, partner). The musicians performed together, but both Steve and Julian reappeared for the sessions for the third album. Drummer Dave Mattacks, who had already contributed to both St. Radigunds and Old Boot Wine, was also present, but he never claimed official membership in the band, remaining loyal to Fairport Convention. Bells, Boots And Shambles, released on Polydor in April 1973, was later hailed as a true masterpiece of British psych-folk, but was underrated at the time, and the band lost their contract after its release. For a while, the musicians continued to prepare material for another album, but then things fizzled out, and Spirogyra gradually disappeared from the scene. It wasn't until the early 2000s that a reunited Cockerham and Francis used the name to record a couple of albums. Both "Children's Earth" and "Spirogyra 5" were released several years later, and their circulation was so small that they immediately became collector's items.
