When Kristen and Matt Esler decided to get involved in the Thoroughbred business, for them, basing their operation in New York was a non-negotiable. The owners and breeders are focused on building a business that is sustainable, and by taking advantage of what the New York breeding program has to offer, they are working to create something that their children and grandchildren can enjoy one day. In this episode of Regional Reach, presented by Fasig-Tipton, Kristen Esler and Najja Thompson, Executive Director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, discuss advantages of the New York-bred program.

00:04It was my husband's dream to start a horse farm in Saratoga and he found this piece of property
00:12and we both fell in love. We love the New York Bread program. It's not just the great purses in
00:20New York State but the Breeders Awards, the Owners Awards, the Stallions Awards. All of a sudden when
00:28those checks come in on a quarterly basis it's like a Christmas present. They really make a
00:34difference and we have continued to expand into more of that program. Since my time with New York
00:43Thurbridge Breeders the program has grown tremendously. It's a credit to our breeders
00:47and that our full crop is increased every year as well as our partnerships with Naira, Nitha,
00:53Finger Legs. We've seen the rise in purse money, incentives, and awards. We have over 60 million
00:59dollars that is distributed annually to breeders and owners of New York Breads that participate in
01:05our program. We love breeding here. There is so much support around us. I think that running in New York
01:14Bread races helps with like horses being able to win probably earlier against their own competition,
01:22getting some black type, increasing resale value, helping those families grow.
01:29The biggest development we've seen in our program especially since my arrival has been the matching of
01:34equal purse money for New York Breads with open company horses on the Naira circuit. When I'm out
01:40talking to breeders, owners of New York Breads, everybody sees this as the opportune time to participate in
01:45our program. Our horses of the year are winning grade one races. Participants in our program are competing and
01:51winning an open company racing. We certainly picture ourselves as top tier competition that's being
01:57bred and competing each year. The New York Breads sale even over the last couple of years, they just
02:03seem to keep stepping it up. And the New York Bread we sold in last year's sale brought numbers that
02:10I was
02:10really thrilled with and didn't didn't necessarily expect. This year we have four. We've got an Oscar
02:19performance filly. She is out of a mare that's produced a grade two winner. And then we have a
02:25flight line colt by Adorable Miss. And then we have a Samaritan's Purse filly by American Revolution.
02:33And Samaritan's Purse is the relationship to Usha. And then we have Arabian Lion. She's out of Heavenly
02:41Score. And I feel like we're in the right place because I think that New York State really is
02:49backing racing. So it's nice to have that feeling of comfort. Racing in New York has a lot to look
02:56forward to. We have a new Belmont Park that's opening in September. And to have owners and breeders
03:02see their horses compete on that new track will be a phenomenal experience. And more owners coming
03:08to the state daily that are proving that owning a New York Bread gives you an advantage.
