00:00As the projectile hit him and he slammed into the ground clutching his face, he had no idea that this
00:05moment would follow him for the rest of his career.
00:08The moment happened at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
00:13Going into the tournament, Brazil, with their legendary three R's, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, all superstars of football in their
00:21own right, were on a mission to secure their fifth title.
00:23But as their group stage match against Turkey began, the South Korean referee Kim Jong-ju seemed overwhelmed by the
00:30magnitude of refereeing a World Cup match featuring the three global superstars.
00:35He came across as more of a nervous substitute teacher than a hardened referee, and decision after decision seemed to
00:41keep landing in favour of Brazil.
00:43However, when one of the Turkish players fouled a Brazilian attacker in the final few minutes of the game, he
00:49knew he'd messed up.
00:50He thought he'd given away a free kick, but as he looked back and saw the ref pointing at the
00:54penalty spot, his heart sank.
00:56See, in football, when a player gets fouled during play, they get a free kick.
01:00And if they get fouled inside the penalty box, they're given a penalty shot from right in front of the
01:04goal.
01:05Replays clearly showed that the initial foul happened outside of the box, but the penalty stood.
01:10Brazil's Rivaldo took the penalty, and he scored with three minutes left in the game.
01:14The Turkish team were furious, believing that they'd been cheated.
01:17In the final moments of the game, Brazil desperately held on to their contentious 2-1 lead.
01:22And when Revaldo went to take a corner kick, he deliberately took his time, dragging it out and delaying it,
01:28in an attempt to burn into what little time Turkey had left to make a comeback.
01:32And that's when Turkish defender Hakan Unsal had enough of the disrespect.
01:37As the tension between the teams boiled over, he lashed out, booting the ball towards Revaldo.
01:42Now, what happened next was quite absurd.
01:45As the ball hit his thigh, Revaldo collapsed, clutching at his face and dramatically rolling on the ground.
01:51His performance was so convincing that the referee gave Unsal a red card, sending him off the field.
01:57Brazil did end up winning the match, but as the stadium's giant screen replayed the incident,
02:02and the video made its way into the news cycle all over the world,
02:05Revaldo's name became synonymous with faking an injury.
02:08And despite continuing to be one of the greatest players in the world,
02:12his career and his legacy became well and truly tarnished with this one ridiculous moment.
