00:00Donald Trump lied to the American people.
00:02He said that immigration enforcement in this country was going to target the worst of the worst.
00:07That's not what has been happening.
00:09Good morning. Thank you, Congresswoman Mejia, for your tremendous leadership and advocacy during this fraught moment,
00:18for extending the invitation to me to sit and talk, along with Congresswoman Rob Menendez,
00:25with families in your community, families in the state of New Jersey who've been subject to ISIS, unjust and inhumane
00:38behavior.
00:40Thankful to the mayors who have joined us here today.
00:44Of course, as I mentioned, to Congressman Menendez for his tremendous leadership.
00:49And of course, to Pastor Carter and the Calvary Baptist Church family for hosting us,
00:56as well as all of the members of the clergy who are here for continuing to be a shelter in
01:02the time of storm.
01:04Taxpayer dollars should be used to make life more affordable.
01:10For the people of this community, this state.
01:13And throughout our country, instead, taxpayer dollars are being used by ICE and Donald Trump's violent mass deportation machine.
01:26To brutalize and kill American citizens and law abiding immigrant families.
01:34Donald Trump lied to the American people.
01:38He said that immigration enforcement in this country was going to target the worst of the worst.
01:43That's not what has been happening.
01:47Immigration enforcement, ICE's violent, out of control and unhinged behavior.
01:56A targeting people who are paying taxes.
02:00People who are raising families in this community and all across our country.
02:12ICE's violent behavior is targeting business owners, job creators, people who are contributing to the local economy,
02:23to the state economy, and to the country's economy.
02:29Donald Trump lied to the American people.
02:31He's hurting the American people.
02:34And the behavior that ICE is engaging in is inconsistent with our values and what America should represent.
02:44Immigration enforcement in this country should be fair, just, and humane.
02:50That's not what's happening.
02:51As was so powerfully communicated by family after family after family here today.
03:01ICE detention centers, including the Laney Hall, which I've visited,
03:08are engaging in un-American behavior.
03:12That includes the lack of adequate medical treatment to people who are oftentimes experiencing severe illness,
03:26including individuals who are being held in these detention facilities,
03:34women who are pregnant, not getting the lack of care that they need.
03:44We've consistently learned, including during the roundtable today,
03:50about the rancid food that is being provided to individuals who are being detained,
04:00to the unsanitary living conditions,
04:05and to the indecency by which many individuals, including at Delaney Hall,
04:15are treating the individuals who have been rounded up, often violently,
04:22by ICE agents who have been unleashed throughout this country as part of Donald Trump's violent mass deportation machine.
04:33The activity that we've continued to learn about is unacceptable, unconscionable, and un-American,
04:44which is why dramatic change is necessary in this country with respect to the manner in which immigration enforcement is
04:53taking place.
04:55We do need comprehensive immigration reform along the lines of what Margarita has courageously talked about,
05:07and where we know there's no ability by these immigration officials or private companies
05:21to behave in a manner consistent with American values,
05:24and that certainly is the case at Delaney Hall, that Delaney Hall needs to be shut down.
05:31And that will remain a high priority for us until it takes place.
05:37So I thank the families who we heard from for your courage, for your bravery, for your resilience.
05:46We will get this situation turned around,
05:48and we will make sure that there's justice for your loved ones
05:52who have been killed or died in custody.
06:01Three deaths at Delaney Hall, completely and totally unacceptable.
06:07Fifty-five deaths in ICE custody since the beginning of Donald Trump's time in office
06:16over the last 17 months or so.
06:22No, that means one death in ICE custody every six days.
06:29That is not America,
06:31and that's why we're committed to turning the situation around.
