00:01Hello once again everyone, this is the K2R2, otherwise known as the K2 Retro Second, and
00:06I am back with another review.
00:09Now this is my second review on the channel, but it's also my very first game review.
00:15Now I have never reviewed a video game before on this channel until now.
00:21So what game am I reviewing today?
00:23Well today's game is going to be Pac-Man DX for the ColecoVision.
00:30Made by Opcode Games.
00:32Now keep in mind, as a little disclaimer, this is not an official Pac-Man product.
00:38This is not officially made by Namco, this is made by Opcode Games.
00:43It is a fan-made homebrew port of Pac-Man on the ColecoVision.
00:50But what this also is, and I'm going to get into this in just a second here, is an updated
00:56version of another Opcode release from 2008.
01:00So, let's talk about it.
01:03So let's start off with, what is Pac-Man DX?
01:06Well, what is it?
01:07So, I'll educate you guys.
01:09So, Pac-Man DX, as I said before, is an updated version of another Opcode release from 2008, and
01:18it's called Pac-Man Collection.
01:20And in Pac-Man Collection, there were three games.
01:25Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Pac-Man Plus, which was a secret game.
01:32But now, this updated version is here, and this updated version includes Pac-Man Plus from the get-go.
01:40So, isn't that awesome?
01:44But not only that, there's also a few more features that I find pretty interesting in this release.
01:52So, of course, one of the ways to get this game is a physical box, which is ordered through Opcode's
02:01website.
02:02So, that's how I got my copy of Pac-Man DX, through Opcode's website.
02:07Of course, some people will also find it on eBay listings or whatever, but I got mine on Opcode, because
02:12why not?
02:13Right?
02:14Paid full price for it, and I waited a couple months for it, and now I have it.
02:20I have that along with the Super Game Module, which is needed to play this game.
02:25And yes, I actually do have a ColecoVision, just so you guys know.
02:30So, here we are.
02:32Here we are.
02:34So, I do not have my camera on.
02:37I'm just showing the title screen while I'm reviewing this.
02:40But I actually have the box in my hands.
02:43And I'm going to start off with the box.
02:46Now, the box art is pretty freaking awesome.
02:51I definitely like the box art, and I could not stop looking at the box art and how well it
02:59is put together.
03:00You got Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and the ghosts.
03:04And you even have the logo, Pac-Man DX, and the logo credit Namco, because obviously Namco made Pac-Man.
03:11So, and it lets you know that it's a Super Game cartridge for the ColecoVision and Atom with the Super
03:19Game Module.
03:20So, keep in mind, you actually need to have the Super Game Module in order to play this game.
03:28Or at least any of other opcode releases that I might probably play in the future and review in the
03:34future.
03:35You know?
03:37So, in the box, well actually, let's read the back of the box first before we get inside the box.
03:45Right?
03:46So, of course, Super Game Module required, which is cool.
03:49It's a Super Game cartridge for one or two players.
03:51And what's actually pretty cool about this being a Super Game cartridge is that it is a 1MB to 2MB
03:58ROM.
04:00Which is pretty interesting.
04:03That's pretty large for a ColecoVision ROM, if I do say so myself.
04:07I've got to admit there.
04:09So, we're actually doing pretty good for ourselves on that one, aren't we?
04:12Good work, ColecoVision homebrew community.
04:15You have my support on that.
04:18So, you also have the description, which I'll read it right here.
04:21It says here,
04:22The pack is back in Opcode Games' latest release for the ColecoVision game system.
04:27As the voracious Pac-Man, or his shapely bride-to-be, Ms. Pac-Man,
04:32you've got to feed your face while staying one step ahead of the ghost part monsters patrolling the maze.
04:38Will you slip through the warp tunnel for a quick escape,
04:41or risk it all for the tempting fruit and fries hanging just out of your reach?
04:45It's up to you and Pac-Man DX.
04:49Awesome.
04:50So, I'm going to open up the box,
04:53and I'm going to describe in the best way I can what contents are in the box,
04:57and then I'll talk about the software ROM itself,
05:00and what do I think of it.
05:02So, in the box, you actually have a collectible card,
05:07which is actually pretty cool.
05:09It's a collectible card of the cover art itself,
05:13and then you also have the Super Game Cartridge Catalog,
05:17which is pretty, pretty interesting,
05:20if I do say so myself,
05:22which shows up all the other opcode releases,
05:25like DK Junior Arcade, Amadar,
05:28DK Arcade, Mooncresta,
05:30Gradius,
05:31Nightmare,
05:33and the Goonies,
05:35which,
05:37alright, why not?
05:39Now, also what stands out is the manual.
05:43Now, the manual is full freaking color,
05:47which is pretty awesome.
05:49I really like the dedication and care that is put into this release,
05:54especially the manual.
05:57Oh my goodness, the manual is amazing.
06:00I definitely like how wonderfully laminated it is,
06:05how printed well it is.
06:08Like, my goodness,
06:10the manual is awesome.
06:14So, not only do you get those things,
06:18but you also have the yellow colored cartridge
06:23in the color of Pac-Man himself,
06:25because Pac-Man is yellow.
06:27So, of course, they're going to make the cartridge yellow.
06:31Which is pretty cool.
06:34So, let me just put everything away,
06:38and then I'm going to talk about the software itself.
06:43Alright.
06:46Alrighty.
06:48So, this is the software itself,
06:51Pac-Man DX.
06:54And,
06:55what's actually pretty interesting about this,
06:59is I definitely like the way the games are.
07:02Now, the games look amazingly similar
07:06to the arcade versions.
07:09Now, if you want to see the gameplay of this game,
07:13I actually uploaded five gameplay videos earlier on the channel,
07:17and you can view those to see
07:19what the game is like.
07:24Now, as I said before,
07:27in Pac-Man Collection,
07:29there were three games.
07:31But in Pac-Man DX,
07:33there's now four games.
07:35Now, I'm not going to count Pac-Man,
07:38because it's the Japanese version of Pac-Man,
07:41and it plays the same thing.
07:42So, we're not going to count that one.
07:45But,
07:47I will count Pac-Man,
07:49Pac-Man Plus,
07:51Ms. Pac-Man,
07:53and oh boy,
07:56Crazy
07:56Auto.
07:59The unreleased version
08:01of Ms. Pac-Man.
08:04In fact,
08:06if you don't know what Crazy Auto is,
08:08Crazy Auto
08:09is actually
08:11the prototype
08:12of Ms. Pac-Man.
08:15And this was way before
08:17they changed the game
08:19to Ms. Pac-Man.
08:21Which is pretty cool.
08:24So, pretty cool history there.
08:26Pretty cool history there.
08:27So, not only that,
08:29let's get into the other features
08:31that we have.
08:32So, what's this
08:33high scores thing?
08:34So, this high scores thing
08:35was never in the previous version.
08:38Now, Opcode actually
08:40has a feature
08:41in some of the other releases, too,
08:43where you can view
08:44your high scores.
08:46And has
08:47high scores saving.
08:50Let's freaking go.
08:54Alright.
08:54So, let's check out
08:55the high scores
08:56so you can see
08:57what the high scores are.
08:59And it shows
09:00how well you did.
09:02Which is
09:02pretty amazing.
09:05So, pretty cool stuff
09:06right there.
09:08But let's get into
09:09the options
09:10real quick.
09:12So, of course,
09:13we have the four options
09:16from Pac-Man Collection.
09:19So, you have the bonus lives.
09:23You can change those.
09:25You can have
09:25like 10,000,
09:2615,000,
09:2720,000,
09:28or no bonus lives
09:29at all
09:30just to give yourself
09:30a challenge.
09:32But,
09:32if you also want to
09:33give yourself a challenge,
09:36there you go.
09:37You want to play this
09:38the hard way?
09:39There you go.
09:40So, you can obviously
09:41set the lives
09:42to whatever you want.
09:43So, you can have
09:44one, two, three,
09:45four, five lives.
09:46I like mod on five lives
09:48because I'm more
09:49of a casual player.
09:50I'm not a hardcore
09:51Pac-Man player.
09:54You can also change
09:56the difficulty
09:56to challenge yourself.
09:59and you also have
10:01the ghost names
10:02which you can change
10:03to the alternate ghost names.
10:05I mean,
10:06it doesn't really
10:07change the game.
10:08It just changes
10:09the ghost names.
10:11Now,
10:12what's a real game changer
10:13right here
10:15is the sprite mode.
10:18Now,
10:20this was never
10:21in Pac-Man Collection.
10:25Sorry,
10:26we're getting
10:26a drink of water.
10:28But,
10:28I'll explain it.
10:30So,
10:31there are two options
10:32for the sprite mode.
10:33You got more colors
10:34and less flicker.
10:35So,
10:36I'll explain
10:37the two modes.
10:39So,
10:39more colors
10:41is obviously
10:42the colors
10:43of the original
10:44arcade game,
10:45but you're going
10:45to see some flicker.
10:46Now,
10:47in the gameplay videos
10:48I uploaded,
10:49yes,
10:49you're going
10:49to see flicker.
10:51and I don't know
10:53why there would be
10:54flicker,
10:54but it's whatever
10:56I guess.
10:58But,
10:59you know,
10:59the flicker
11:00doesn't really bother me.
11:01But,
11:02either way,
11:03cool option
11:03to have more colors.
11:05Less flicker
11:06is an option
11:08as well.
11:09So,
11:09what this option
11:10does
11:10is that
11:11it kind of
11:13feels like
11:14the MSX
11:15version of Pac-Man.
11:17Because in the
11:18MSX version
11:19of Pac-Man,
11:20the ghosts
11:21look a little
11:22different
11:23in terms
11:24of the
11:25the fact
11:27the eyes
11:27are the same
11:28color
11:29as
11:30their skin
11:31color.
11:33If that's
11:33a good way
11:34of putting it.
11:36But,
11:37yes,
11:37indeed.
11:38You know,
11:39you got some
11:40nice options
11:40and stuff like that.
11:42And,
11:43I definitely
11:43think
11:44these are
11:45I definitely
11:48think that
11:48these are
11:48great positives.
11:50you know,
11:52I definitely
11:53think these
11:53are great
11:53positives.
11:54What I also
11:55like about
11:56the menu
11:56is that
11:57you have
11:58a remix
11:59of Pac-Man
12:00Fever
12:00playing.
12:01I'm glad
12:02this was
12:02kept in there
12:03as Pac-Man
12:04Fever is a
12:05really awesome
12:05song.
12:06I definitely
12:06enjoyed listening
12:07to it.
12:08I actually
12:09liked Worm
12:09Quartet's
12:10cover of that
12:10song.
12:11You know,
12:12I find myself
12:13listening to that
12:13more than
12:14Buckner and
12:15Garcia's version.
12:16but it's
12:17alright.
12:18You know,
12:19still an awesome
12:19song.
12:20I definitely
12:20like how the
12:21song is an
12:218-bit,
12:22you know,
12:23an 8-bit
12:23chip tune,
12:24if you will,
12:25which is
12:25pretty awesome.
12:27Very,
12:27very awesome.
12:28The title
12:29screen is
12:29very amazing.
12:30You got
12:30Pac-Man and
12:31Ms. Pac-Man
12:32blinking their
12:32eyes on the
12:33menu,
12:33and when you
12:34pick one of
12:35their games,
12:35they do a
12:36pose,
12:36which is
12:36pretty cool.
12:38So,
12:39yeah,
12:41not bad.
12:43So,
12:44how's the
12:44presentation?
12:45The
12:46presentation is
12:47amazing.
12:48Yeah,
12:49excuse my
12:50coughing throughout
12:50this video.
12:53But,
12:53the presentation
12:54is actually
12:55really amazing.
12:56I definitely
12:57love the
12:58presentation.
13:00Right?
13:01The gameplay
13:02feels a lot
13:03like the
13:04arcade versions,
13:06in terms of
13:06all five,
13:07well,
13:08in terms of
13:08all three
13:09variations of
13:10Pac-Man,
13:10and both
13:12variations of
13:12Ms. Pac-Man.
13:13The games
13:14play faithfully
13:15to their
13:16arcade counterparts,
13:17which is
13:17pretty amazing,
13:18if I do say
13:19so myself,
13:20actually.
13:22But,
13:23yeah,
13:23so the
13:24presentation
13:24and gameplay
13:25is awesome.
13:25The sound
13:26quality is
13:27amazing for
13:28ColecoVision
13:29standards.
13:30So,
13:31I definitely
13:31like the
13:32sound on
13:33here.
13:33Pretty
13:34awesome.
13:36So,
13:36yeah.
13:37So,
13:38the sound
13:38of music
13:39is,
13:39like,
13:40really
13:40par.
13:41Pretty
13:42good.
13:43Very,
13:44very good.
13:45I know
13:45it doesn't
13:46really sound
13:47like the
13:47arcade game,
13:48but hey,
13:49you know,
13:49you gotta
13:50work with
13:50what you
13:51gotta work
13:51with,
13:52right?
13:52But,
13:53either way,
13:54the sound
13:54is awesome.
13:55The sound
13:56is awesome.
13:57Now,
13:57my only one
13:58caveat in
13:59this version
14:00is,
14:00actually,
14:00there's no
14:01speed-up
14:02mode.
14:02I mean,
14:03I don't know
14:03why they
14:04didn't even
14:04put a speed-up
14:05mode in this
14:06version.
14:06That would
14:07have been
14:07awesome to
14:07have a speed-up
14:08mode,
14:08as I
14:09definitely
14:10love playing
14:10Pac-Man with
14:11the speed-up
14:12option,
14:13or at least
14:14with the speed-up
14:15hack,
14:15because I
14:15definitely
14:16remember playing
14:16the Pac-Man
14:17anniversary
14:17machines that
14:19actually have
14:20speed-up,
14:21which is
14:21actually pretty
14:22awesome.
14:23So,
14:23I definitely
14:24think that
14:24should have
14:25been in there,
14:25but that's
14:26just my opinion,
14:27really.
14:28I mean,
14:29if you guys
14:30agree,
14:30good.
14:31If you guys
14:31disagree,
14:32also,
14:32whatever,
14:33you know,
14:33fine with me.
14:34we can agree
14:35and disagree
14:35on that one.
14:36So,
14:37it's all
14:38whatever,
14:39you know,
14:39good stuff.
14:40It's all
14:41Gucci up in
14:42here.
14:43So,
14:44I definitely
14:45think this is
14:46actually the
14:46definitive version
14:47of Pac-Man
14:48collection.
14:50I definitely
14:51think it's
14:52definitive because
14:53it has,
14:53you know,
14:55more variants,
14:57right?
14:57You get Pac-Man
14:58Plus from the
14:59start without
15:00having to enter
15:01any crazy codes
15:02for it.
15:03You get
15:04Crazy Auto,
15:05which is pretty
15:05nice,
15:06speaking of
15:06crazy,
15:08but you also
15:09have the more
15:10colors and less
15:11flicker options.
15:12You get the
15:12high scores,
15:13best presentation,
15:15improved gameplay.
15:17Like,
15:18it's all here.
15:19And if you're
15:20looking for the
15:20best Pac-Man
15:21experience on
15:22ColecoVision,
15:23this is it.
15:24This is it
15:25right here.
15:26This is like
15:28my ColecoVision
15:29game of the
15:30year,
15:30really.
15:31So,
15:32yeah,
15:33Pac-Man DX,
15:34it's awesome.
15:35I encourage you
15:36guys to buy it.
15:37Please support
15:38Opcode's releases.
15:39Please support
15:40Opcode himself.
15:42You know,
15:44pretty good stuff.
15:46And yeah,
15:47that is what I
15:48think of Pac-Man
15:49DX.
15:52So,
15:53yeah.
15:53So,
15:54my final verdict
15:55of this game,
15:56perfect score.
15:58I mean,
15:59I still think
16:00that they could
16:00have had the
16:01speed up,
16:02but either way,
16:04I think it's
16:05perfect.
16:05I think it's a
16:06perfect port of
16:07Pac-Man on the
16:08ColecoVision,
16:09and I think it's a
16:11lot better than
16:12the 2008 release,
16:13in my opinion.
16:15So,
16:16yeah.
