01:00Two sisters raised money towards a holiday after a heartbreaking loss
01:03As a mum, I'm so, so proud of them, like I couldn't be any prouder
01:09Going dark, we find out more about a solar eclipse hitting Ken's skies tomorrow evening
01:14I'm very excited, we've been following the news about the solar eclipse for a month now
01:29But our top story tonight
01:30A youth centre in Broadstairs is having to tell their children to stay in the shade
01:35Rather than play outside in the park all day
01:37As hot temperatures aren't going anywhere
01:40Victoria, who owns the club, says the added cost of providing sun cream and air conditioning
01:44Are also a worry
01:46Megan Shaw went to Thanet to meet her
01:48It's a great big park, it's beautiful
01:51But it's too hot to play out there
01:53It's the summer holidays
01:55But rather than play out in the sun
01:57The ongoing heatwave and weather warnings have meant that children are advised to stay indoors
02:03But what do you do if there's no parents at home and that isn't an option?
02:07Now children at the Zone Youth Club in Broadstairs usually play outside all summer
02:19But this summer they've been needing to have to sit in the shade
02:23Victoria runs a youth centre that during the summer holidays can look after several children
02:29for over four hours a day, every day
02:32Which is a challenge in itself without also navigating record breaking temperatures
02:37This year, literally from day one when it was so hot
02:43We had to review a sun policy
02:46We've had to buy extra sun cream
02:48We've had UV bracelets just for the kids to wear
02:52Just to warn them to put sun cream on
02:55And the responsibility of when we've got 20 or 30 children here
03:00Of making sure that they're having drinks frequently
03:03That they're coming in from the hot sun
03:06It's an added responsibility for us
03:09And it's a bit of a concern
03:11Rather than being able to play tennis or football all day
03:14Children are being encouraged to take on more leisurely activities
03:19Such as making clay pots that are then able to take advantage of the heat by drying out in the
03:25sun
03:25Would you sit in the shade and wish you could play tennis or football and that it wasn't so hot?
03:31Yeah, sometimes
03:32Sometimes I like the hot
03:33But like when I'm just sitting in the shade like I could be out there playing football right now
03:37Or like I could be out there playing rounders
03:39Like sometimes it like makes me feel a bit sad that it's so hot
03:44Due to climate change the hot weather is likely here to stay in Kent
03:49Which for Victoria means figuring out how to heatwave proof the youth centre to prioritise the children's welfare
03:56While also working under a budget
04:00A proper air conditioning unit is hugely expensive
04:03And it's something that we probably have to think about
04:06Not necessarily for this summer now
04:08It would be too late
04:09But for next year
04:10If this sort of weather is going to continue
04:12It's something that we seriously have to think about
04:14And we're talking hundreds and hundreds if not more
04:17And it's money as a small independent youth club that we just don't have
04:21So
04:21It's a lot to sweat about
04:23And unfortunately cooler weather seems far away
04:27Megan Shaw for Kame TV in Broadstairs
04:32Yesterday the National Drought Group announced that Kent was officially in drought
04:35The county only received 1% of the long term average rainfall in July
04:40And joins more than half of the UK which is already in drought
04:43So our sister station KMFM spoke to Councillor Stuart Jeffery
04:46By the measures that Maidstone have put in place to reduce the risk of wildfires and water shortages
04:52Let's have a look at what he had to say
04:54We're planting trees for example in the town centre to reduce the temperatures
04:59We're looking at our parks and thinking
05:02How safe are they in terms of wildfires
05:05So we're working with Kent Fire and Rescue to review access
05:09So that if they do catch a light we can get the fire engines there quickly
05:16And we're doing other things such as supporting the rivers in particular
05:23Which are running desperately low at the moment
05:26We've recently reissued the call places that we have in the town
05:33So I think we've got five call sites for people who are struggling in the heat to go along
05:39These are air conditioned places such as our community arts hub
05:43That they can go to, that they can sit down in the call and feel a bit better
05:50Plans for a new town centre play park at Folkestone's former bus station has been criticised
05:55With fears that it will attract crime
05:57The play zone will be created in Bovary Square
06:00As part of Folkestone and Hive District Council's A Brighter Future scheme
06:03However, residents have objected to the prospect of a new park in what is a known crime hotspot
06:08In June alone 36 crimes were reported within the square and in the surrounding area
06:14The most crimes compared to any other area
06:16A council spokesperson has said that the design of the play zone will be reviewed by
06:20Kent Police's Design Out crime team during its development
06:24A conservative councillor has called Kent's roadworks a joke
06:28As a vital road through Leeds closes again
06:30Councillor Gil Ford spoke out after a week-long closure of the B2163 near Maidstone
06:36As temporary traffic lights brought chaos to the village
06:39Kent County Council issues the permits for road closures and tries to coordinate them
06:43But has little or no control over emergency closures
06:46The amount of closures have increased year on year for July
06:49But KCC's cabinet member for highways and transport has said that some disruption is unavoidable
06:57A police officer who groped five women during a night out in Maidstone has avoided prison
07:02Mark Slade who travelled from outside Kent to party in the city
07:06Appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday charged with five counts of sexual assault
07:11But the sentencing didn't live up to the victims' hopes
07:14And Chloe Brewster joins us now to tell us more
07:16So Chloe tell us a little bit about Mark
07:18So Mark Slater was a police officer
07:21He wasn't one based in Kent
07:22He was actually based in Worcestershire at the time of the assaults
07:25And he'd come to Maidstone and was partying at Beer Keller for a friend's party
07:29It was heard in court how the 51-year-old Slade had been heavily drinking that night
07:34And had been behaving in a predatory and creepy way
07:38You can see a picture of him leaving court on screen now
07:43It was reported that he sexually assaulted five women
07:46And when that was put to him at the police
07:48He gave a no comment interview
07:50But then later pled guilty to all five offences of sexual assault put to him
07:54He also resigned from his 23-year-long career in the police
07:58And has since been working as a bus driver
08:00Now his defence did put forward a number of difficulties that Slade had been going through
08:05To defend his actions
08:06He said that he had PTSD from an incident that happened early in his policing career
08:11And also he'd been experiencing excessive drinking
08:14However, passing sentence recorder
08:17Cairns Nelson KC added that none of his personal mitigation
08:21Excused his behaviour that night
08:22Telling Slade he'd demonstrated persistent
08:24Sustained
08:25Predatory
08:26Unwanted
08:26Uninvited
08:27Creepy
08:28Tactile
08:29Abusive behaviour
08:30Towards women
08:31However, reflecting on the delay in this case
08:33It's been more than three years since the night in question
08:36So the judge decided to deliver a 12-month jail term suspended for two years
08:39Which is also disappointing some of the victims
08:41And how common is it for sexual assault charges to see prison time?
08:47Now it's an either way offence
08:49So it can be tried in either Crown Court or Magistrates Court
08:52And punishment can range from a community order to seven years in custody
08:55Now this case in particular
08:57It didn't quite meet the seriousness of the offence that it could do
09:01It's dependent on harm and culpability
09:04Whether there are psychological, physical impacts, violence
09:06Whether it was, for example, aggravated by race
09:10But it is not always common to see jail time
09:12But in this case, obviously, we didn't
09:14We saw a suspended sentence
09:15Thank you so much for bringing this story, Chloe
09:19Jessica Anderson is preparing to take on the 25-kilometre London Summer Walk
09:23Ultra Challenge this August
09:25Inspired by a lifetime of overcoming complex congenital heart disease
09:29And is determined to give back to the charity that has helped her defy the odds
09:33A serious congenital heart condition meant that much of her childhood was spent in and out of hospital
09:38Living with heart failure
09:39And doctors told her frequently to avoid strenuous activity
09:42I spoke to her earlier today
09:44Jessica, when doctors told you that you might not be able to do things like this
09:47Did you ever believe that you'd reach this point?
09:50No, I didn't
09:52I've actually asked before, quite a few years ago
09:56More than once, actually
09:58I asked them quite a few years ago if I would be able to do the London to Brighton bike
10:03ride
10:03And the response to that was a firm no
10:07So it's quite nice to be able to do this
10:09And you've had major heart operations now
10:12Or several major heart operations
10:14What would you say has been the hardest point in this journey?
10:17Is it doing the challenge that you're doing now?
10:20I think really the hardest thing of this journey at the moment of taking this challenge on
10:26Is it's really more the mental side of stuff
10:30So it's been a lot of reflection for me to look back at how far I've come
10:36How sick I have been in quite a lot of moments of my life
10:41Especially in a lot of my upbringing as well
10:43And it's been a real emotional sort of reflection for me
10:49And my family actually
10:52And are you nervous about walking 25km
10:55Given everything that your heart has been through
10:57And the fact that you were sick?
11:00I am nervous but in a good way
11:02I'm nervous but I feel ready, I feel prepared
11:06Maybe a bit naive about it
11:08But yeah, I definitely
11:09I'm definitely feeling nervous, yeah
11:12But ready
11:12And how can people support you in this challenge?
11:16So I have a JustGiving page
11:20And really what it's done is really sort of restore my faith in humanity
11:26This whole thing has been going on for several months
11:28And people have offered like their time
11:31If they can't afford to donate
11:34They've shared the page
11:35Which has been really useful
11:36We talk about it
11:38People have offered to do the training with me
11:40Which has been amazing
11:42So really support doesn't just look like donations
11:45Obviously they are amazing
11:47And they're incredible
11:48And they're so, so useful
11:49And they're going to go and make such a huge difference
11:51But people can support by either donating
11:54Or sharing the page
11:56Or just offering their support and motivation really
12:00Now it's time for a quick break
12:01But don't get anywhere
12:02Because we have plenty more coming soon
12:04We'll see you very soon
12:33Bye
12:44Bye
13:15Bye
13:44Bye
14:15Bye
14:45Bye
15:24Hello and welcome back to Kent Tonight live here on KMTV
15:28Two sisters in Jenningham are hoping to put a brighter outlook
15:32On what has been an incredibly difficult year
15:34Honor and Ruby have set up a stall outside their home
15:37Selling sunglasses, drinks and biscuits
15:39To raise money towards a family holiday
15:42The young entrepreneurs have come through incredibly tough times
15:45But are supporting each other and their mum
15:47After their father passed away just last year
15:49Kristen Hawthorne has been to meet the family
15:52Let's have a look at the report
15:53Meet Honor and Ruby
15:54Their front garden has become their very own shop
15:57With sunglasses, drinks and biscuits for sale
16:00The money is going towards a family holiday
16:03They've already raised more than £900
16:05Through the stall Anna GoFundMe
16:07Set up by someone in the community
16:09But there's a much bigger reason behind their fundraising
16:12Their dad Benjamin Woods died in October
16:15He had been terminally ill with cancer and other illnesses
16:19For around 18 months
16:21So we were meant to go to Disneyland Paris
16:24Before Ben died with the girls
16:26And sadly he was too ill
16:28He wouldn't have made it there
16:29Obviously he couldn't even make a journey to the end of the road and back
16:32So the girls were like
16:34Oh we really want to go on holiday
16:35They didn't have a passport
16:36And I thought right, now's the time
16:38So I got mine and the girls passports
16:40And we were looking
16:41And we decided to go to Tunisia
16:43And then the girls wanted to like do something themselves
16:47It's summer holidays
16:48They said oh can we sell some sunglasses
16:50So we purchased a bulk loads of sunglasses
16:53And we started to sell them for a pound each
16:56And then the girls decided with some of the money that they made
16:59On the first day that they wanted to go up to Tesco's
17:02And then to sell drinks
17:04In order to make their own money to spend on holiday
17:08Because their words were
17:10I do enough for them
17:12And they want to pay for me to do something
17:14The bargain warehouse in Rainham
17:15Donated more things for them to sell
17:17Helping them raise even more
17:19And Marley says she couldn't be more proud of the pair
17:22He got encylopathy as well
17:24And onset dementia
17:25Which was quite hard
17:26Because sometimes he'd forget who he was
17:28So obviously the girls
17:30They've been so brave
17:32And so strong throughout everything
17:33And for kids their age
17:35They've seen things that they shouldn't have seen
17:36And do you know what
17:37As a mum
17:38I'm so so proud of them
17:40Like I couldn't be any prouder
17:41They told me some of their favourite memories of their dad
17:44He was lovely
17:46He was kind
17:48He smelled nice
17:50He was salty
17:52And he had the best
17:54He had the grey beard
17:56He had blonde hair
17:58And then it turned brown when he shaved it off
18:00This is the trio's first summer without Benjamin
18:03But surrounded by their community
18:05Honour, Ruby and their mum
18:07Are making memories of their own
18:09This stall does more than just raise money
18:12It helps them face grief together
18:14Support each other
18:15And slowly find their way forward
18:17So if you see the stall
18:18Pop by and say hello
18:19Kristen Hawthorne for KMTV, Gillingham
18:23A report into an arson attack
18:25Inside a high rise in Margate
18:27Has found that it was carried out
18:28After poor security
18:29Allowed intruders to break in
18:31The blaze began on Easter Monday
18:33Inside a vacant ground floor unit
18:35At 142 Home Arlington House
18:38With smoke spreading into the residential part
18:40Of the 18 storey building
18:42Official Thanet District Council papers
18:44Now state that the incident unfolded
18:46As contractors prepared to carry out urgent repairs
18:49To the concrete and cladding
18:51The local authority points to the lack
18:53Of effective site perimeter fencing
18:54And the insecure commercial unit
18:57As having contributed to the arson attack
19:00A review has been announced into Ashford's
19:02Struggling water infrastructure
19:04Following a series of outages
19:06Communities in the Ashford Borough
19:08Have been left without a water supply
19:09During several incidents this year
19:11With residents and businesses
19:13Having to rely on bottled water
19:14Now Ashford Borough Council
19:16Have set up a task group
19:17To review water supply resilience
19:19And infrastructure
19:20They hope the information collected
19:22Through this consultation
19:22Will help understand the effects
19:24Of water supply issues
19:25On local communities
19:26And assess how effectively
19:28Information and support were provided
19:30During the incidents
19:32Eurostar rival Gemini
19:33Is looking to house trains
19:35At an abandoned Ashford depot site
19:37The former Chartlecon site
19:39Which closed 12 years ago
19:40Is proposed to become
19:41The train company's main depot
19:43Should it get the green light
19:44To run international services
19:46But it has already been waiting
19:47For two years
19:48For the Department of Transport
19:50To make a decision
19:51Regarding that
19:52Gemini Train's
19:53Chief Executive Adrian Quine
19:54Caught the opportunity golden
19:56And has said he hopes
19:57It could create new jobs
19:59For Kent locals
20:01Now don't forget
20:02You can keep up to date
20:03With all your latest stories
20:04Across the county
20:05By logging onto our website
20:06KMTV.co.uk
20:07There you'll find all our stories
20:09Including this one
20:11Back in World War 2
20:12Kent was the country's
20:13First line of defence
20:14And with flying bombs
20:15Being sent over the channel
20:16Towards London
20:17Plenty landed here
20:18In the Garden of England
20:20And this man
20:21Colin Welch
20:22Has been dedicating his time
20:23To finding these bombs
20:25With the tail end
20:26Of this V1 flying bomb
20:28Found in private farmland
20:29In Eyewade
20:30Near Sittingbourne
20:30Now on his front garden
20:32To the untrained eye
20:34This might just look
20:35Like a hunk of old metal
20:36But it's actually
20:37A rare piece
20:37Of Kent's military history
20:39That shows a special method
20:40Pilots would use
20:41To alter the course
20:42Of the bombs
20:43It doesn't involve
20:45Metal to metal contact
20:47It's about disturbing
20:48The air flow
20:48Between the wings
20:49Of the flying bomb
20:50And the aircraft
20:52So the pilot
20:53Has got to gently
20:56Get close to the wing
20:57Underneath the wing
20:58Or on top of it
20:59Possibly
21:01But the records
21:02I've read
21:02Talk about underneath
21:03So it disturbs
21:05The air flow
21:06To confuse the gyros
21:08Because they'll be
21:09Working hard
21:10To try and keep
21:10The flying bomb
21:11Level and true
21:13Eventually
21:14It tips
21:15The flying bomb over
21:16And that wing tipping
21:18Brought it down
21:18In Sittingbourne
21:19Where Colin and his team
21:20Managed to find it
21:21Using GPS tracking
21:22And metal detecting
21:23As well as
21:24Combat reports
21:25To connect it
21:25To specific pilots
21:28In an aerial archive
21:29There was a survey
21:30After the second world war
21:31Where you can see
21:33A crater
21:33Because we've
21:35Done this quite a lot
21:36We know the size
21:37Of crater
21:37That we're looking for
21:38That may represent
21:39A flying bomb
21:40Or a rocket
21:41So we begin
21:43To drill down
21:43Into that information
21:44Looking for
21:45Accurate records
21:47That support
21:47Our guess
21:49That that is
21:50What we think it is
21:52Now here it is
21:52This is part of the
21:54V1 flying bomb
21:55This is only about
21:56A third of the length
21:57Of the full thing
21:58So you can imagine
21:59The scale of what
22:00One of these would
22:01Have looked like
22:01Now what makes this
22:02Find particularly special
22:04Is obviously we know
22:05That it was wingtipped
22:06Thanks to those
22:07Combat reports
22:07But what's interesting
22:09Is it also has
22:09A bullet hole
22:10In the side of it
22:11Which adds another layer
22:13To the research
22:13That Colin's been doing
22:14This is because
22:15Flying bombs were
22:16Typically brought down
22:17By wingtipping
22:18Air defence artillery
22:19Or by balloons
22:20Sent up to alter
22:21Its course
22:22But an intact part
22:24Of the bomb
22:24That shows signs of
22:25Both wingtipping
22:26And artillery damage
22:27Is particularly rare
22:28According to Colin
22:29The part that comes next
22:30Is plenty of paperwork
22:31And cleaning
22:32For the conservation
22:33Of the bomb
22:34He needs to make sure
22:35It's in a good enough
22:36Condition to be further
22:37Examined
22:37So wherever you may be
22:39In Kent
22:39There could be a
22:40London bound bomb
22:41From the 1940s
22:42Beneath your feet
22:43Waiting to be discovered
22:45Finn McDermid
22:46For KMTV
22:47In Sittingbourne
22:48Well we've now had
22:50Heatwave after heatwave
22:51We're currently in a drought
22:52Here in the county
22:53So let's have a look
22:54At the weather
22:55For the coming days
23:00Well today's the first day
23:02We're dealing with
23:02The Amber Heat
23:03Health warning
23:03Put across the county
23:05But looking at the forecast
23:06We've got lows of
23:0719 there
23:08To tomorrow morning
23:09Highs of 25
23:10Across the county
23:11Lows of 22
23:12There in Margate
23:13Heading into the afternoon
23:15Highs of 32
23:16In Tunbridge Wells
23:17Lows of 27
23:18In Margate
23:18But again an Amber Heat
23:19Health alert is in place
23:21And for your outlook
23:22For the coming days
23:2234 degrees on Thursday
23:24And 30 on Friday
23:25Which is the last day
23:26Of the heat health warning
23:27And cloudy on Sunday
23:28With 25 degrees
23:40Now for any astronomers out there
23:42People across the county
23:43Do have a chance to witness
23:44One of the most significant
23:45Solar eclipses
23:46In nearly 30 years
23:48Tomorrow's partial solar eclipse
23:49Will see up to 95% of the sun
23:52Obscured by the moon
23:53And warnings are being issued
23:55Not to look directly at the eclipse
23:56Without the correct eye protection
23:58But many people across the county
24:00Are struggling to find
24:01The protective lenses
24:01So what can they do instead?
24:03Well, Maisie Walker reports
24:05Are you excited for the eclipse tomorrow?
24:07Yes
24:08It's something incredible I think
24:11You know
24:11I'm very excited
24:13We've been following the news
24:15About the solar eclipse
24:16For a month now
24:17Many people across Kent
24:19Are getting excited
24:20About the solar eclipse tomorrow
24:21But how is it that people
24:23Can actually stay safe
24:24Without protective glasses?
24:26This comes as a frantic rush
24:28Has swept not just across Kent
24:30But the UK
24:31As people scramble
24:32To find the right kind
24:33Of protective eyewear
24:34Ahead of tomorrow's
24:36Partial solar eclipse
24:37High street stores
24:39Are running out
24:39While online shoppers
24:41Who managed to find a pair
24:42Are being warned
24:43They may not arrive
24:44Until the end of the week
24:46And here in Kent
24:47Demand is proving
24:48Just as high
24:49Today
24:50I'm in the midst
24:52Of trying to find
24:52Some glasses
24:54In order to
24:55Watch it in the best way possible
24:57No I forgot to get glasses
24:59But yeah
25:00I should try and watch it somehow
25:02Maybe try and pick up some today
25:04So how can we stay safe
25:06While watching the eclipse
25:07If we don't have the correct eyewear?
25:09The sun surface that you see
25:12Even if 90% of the sun is covered
25:15It's still as bright per unit area
25:19As when the sun is uncovered
25:21So it's dangerous to look directly
25:24At the sun at any time
25:25With the naked eye
25:26You can damage your eyesight
25:27Very badly by looking
25:28Directly at the sun
25:29So either use special
25:31Solar glasses
25:32Which are available
25:33Or alternatively
25:35As I said
25:35Project through a pinhole
25:37Onto a white surface
25:39And then you get a nice image
25:40Of the sun
25:41The fact that in fact
25:42The sun will be quite low
25:43In the sky
25:44In the west-northwest
25:46Means that it's quite easy
25:48To have projection
25:49Onto a horizontal surface
25:50Or sorry
25:50A vertical surface
25:51It's important to remember
25:53That ordinary glasses
25:55Unfiltered cameras
25:56And binoculars
25:57Will not protect your eyes
25:58From the sun
25:59Maisie Walker
