Donald Trump Backs Gianni Infantino After Pressure Mounts on FIFA: Will he stay?
Transcript
00:00Donald Trump has publicly backed FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid growing pressure on the head of world football's governing body.
00:13The US President Donald Trump warned that FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if it considered replacing Infantino, praising
00:23the Swiss-Italian administrator for overseeing what he described as the most successful World Cup ever.
00:31It remains to be seen whether Trump's support will help or hinder Infantino's campaign to stay on as FIFA President.
00:40He tried to set up the FFE, which would have allowed around 20% of the company to be sold
00:48to private investors.
00:49Now, the plan was strongly opposed by UEFA, the confederation in Africa and Asia as well, who accused FIFA's leadership
00:58of a fundamental breach of trust.
01:02Although FIFA subsequently did apologise for the proposal, opposition to Infantino has continued, with UEFA maintaining the threat of a
01:13boycott of FIFA competitions, while he remains as President.
01:18US Soccer and Canada Soccer have also led meaningful protests against FIFA, asking for more accountability.
01:28FIFA has defended Infantino previously and encouraged organisations to complain via democratic processes, rather than attempting to mount public pressure
01:41on Gianni Infantino.
