00:01The purpose of this Royal Commission is to maximise the benefits and to minimise the
00:06unwanted impacts of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Premier Peter Malinowskis was
00:12recently in the US. He met with big tech CEOs including Tim Cook from Apple and also the
00:19leader of OpenAI. Peter Malinowskis is wanting AI companies to participate in the Royal Commission
00:27which would help shape future approaches to the technology. It's expected that the Royal
00:33Commission will also hear from businesses, from unions, academics and industry bodies and to
00:40examine the impacts of the tech on things like education, health, skills and infrastructure.
00:48The terms of reference are expected to be laid out within the next four to six weeks and as for
00:54the
00:54cost, well she's expecting that the taxpayer will have to fork out about three million dollars for
01:00this Royal Commission but Premier Peter Malinowskis has said that it'll be worth every penny.
01:07We're talking about the potential for a complete reformation in the way that people put their
01:13labour into the market and have it acquired by someone who wants to utilise it. Three million
01:19dollars is going to look like a complete small beer in comparison to the potential costs if we don't
01:26put the policy effort in place to get this right. The reaction to this Royal Commission has largely
01:32been positive at least. That is from one expert from the University of New South Wales, Toby Walsh.
01:38He has said that South Australia could be leaders of the country with its AI policy but he also warned
01:45that the Royal Commission may not be able to keep up with how quickly AI is advancing.
01:52The inquiry is expected to start on October 1 and to have a report no later than July 1 of
02:00next year.
02:01As for who will be leading this Royal Commission, well there will be three commissioners involved.
02:07There will be an international search for those three people but the Premier has said that he does
02:13have people in mind for the job.
