00:02The rescue of a humpback whale carp at Garry over the weekend warmed the hearts of all who witnessed it.
00:09I hadn't even thought about rescuing a whale.
00:12The rescuers called the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
00:16They just said just to try our best to keep it wet until they arrived,
00:21but be wary that it is a large animal.
00:24Yeah, so we just kept our distance.
00:27But despite the willingness to jump in to help,
00:30some of the volunteers admitted they were completely unprepared.
00:33There's lots of awareness about our dingoes,
00:36but there's no awareness about if you possibly come in contact with a whale.
00:40The whales have very large tail flukes,
00:44which if you were to get in the way of one could be lethal.
00:48SeaWorld also rescued two whales off the Gold Coast over the weekend,
00:51after they became entangled in fishing gear.

00:55Due to whaling, Australia's humpback population reduced to around 150 in the 1960s.
01:01That's rebounded to more than 50,000 whales along Australia's east coast.
01:05Experts say strandings will become more common.
01:08The loss of any individual whale is a terrible tragedy.
01:12And because of the numbers, and the increasing numbers, it may happen with greater frequency.
01:18The Environment Department says if you see a stranded whale,
01:21keep your distance and report it via the Kew Wildlife app.
