I set out into the mountains alone, not expecting the weather to turn so fast. When a blizzard hit and the temperature dropped to –25°C, turning back was no longer an option. My only chance was to find shelter in a deserted mountain settlement. I cut firewood, lit the stove, and made it through a long, freezing night. Someone had left prepared firewood behind — a small sign of human presence that may have saved my life. At first light, I headed home.
