00:00Here on Earth, the rules of physics are highly polite.
00:04Gravity holds you down at a very manageable 1g.
00:08Your atoms exist as stable little spheres, and the chemical bonds between them securely hold your biology together.
00:16But out in the deep vacuum, those rules look very different.
00:21If you compress the mass of two suns into a sphere 12 miles across, spinning hundreds of times a second,
00:30you get a pulsar.
00:31Black holes might be more famous for their destructive power, but they hide that violence behind an event horizon.
00:39Pulsars shred matter right out in the open.
00:42To see how these objects redefine the limits of the universe, we are taking a hypothetical lethal journey toward one
00:50of these neutron stars.
00:52This journey allows us to track the deconstruction of matter itself,
00:56watching the rules of biology, chemistry, and physics dissolve across every microscopic scale.
01:04By the time we reach the surface, this descent will reveal some of the most mind-bending, intense physics in
01:11the cosmos.
01:12Millions of miles out, the approach feels calm.
01:16But cross into the inner system, and you enter the deepest gravitational well generated by any single object that isn't
01:26a black hole.
01:27Drifting within a few thousand miles, gravity pulls your feet significantly harder than your head,
01:35a dynamic known as gravitational tidal force.
01:40Astrophysicists call this spaghettification.
01:43Your biological structure is stretched vertically into a string of tissue,
01:49while simultaneously squeezed flat by immense lateral pressure.
01:54On Earth, you deal with one G.
01:57Right now, you are experiencing billions of Gs.
02:01Your entire macrobiology is erased long before you ever get close to the actual star.
02:09Your physical body is gone, but your atomic structure is still falling.
02:14Now, those surviving atoms have to deal with the pulsar's magnetic field.
02:19We measure magnetic fields in a unit called Gauss.
02:23A pulsar generates a field in the trillions of Gauss,
02:28millions of times more intense than the strongest magnets ever built on Earth.
02:34To see what that pressure does, look at this standard microscopic model.
02:39Normally, a central nucleus is surrounded by a spherical cloud of orbiting electrons.
02:45Under a multi-trillion Gauss magnetic field,
02:49that cloud is violently crushed, turning your atoms into tight microscopic needles.
02:56Because the electrons are trapped in these rigid cylindrical paths,
03:00they completely lose the ability to share orbits with neighboring atoms.
03:05Without shared electrons, every chemical bond instantly dissolves.
03:10At this threshold, you are no longer organic matter.
03:14You are simply a cloud of stretched, magnetically aligned atoms,
03:18stripped of the rules of chemistry.
03:21This brings us to the pulsar's signature feature.
03:24As the star spins, it channels particles out its magnetic poles,
03:29creating sweeping lighthouse beams of X-rays and gamma rays,
03:34traveling at nearly light speed.
03:36And your descending cloud of needle-shaped atoms
03:40crosses the path of the spinning star.
03:43It directly intersects one of these beams.
03:46The radiation is so concentrated that it instantly vaporizes those remaining atoms,
03:53tearing away their lingering structure and converting them into high-energy plasma.
03:59A single millisecond exposure to this beam delivers millions of times the lethal dose of radiation.
04:07At this point, even your subatomic architecture has been destroyed.
04:12We are now in the final fraction of a second before impact.
04:17The surface gravity of a pulsar is roughly 100 billion times stronger than Earth's,
04:23creating an unbelievable final acceleration.
04:26By the time your disintegrated plasma reaches the crust,
04:31it is traveling at over 40% the speed of light, roughly 80,000 miles per second.
04:38When that ultra-fast, high-energy plasma finally strikes the super-dense crust of iron nuclei,
04:46the resulting collision is absolutely blinding.
04:49The kinetic energy released in that fraction of a millisecond produces an explosion of x-rays,
04:57equivalent to thousands of nuclear warheads detonating simultaneously.
05:03At this precise moment of impact, all that built-up kinetic energy is expelled.
05:10Absolutely nothing of your original material form remains.
05:14Your matter spreads out instantaneously across the surface.
05:19On a microscopic level, your remains form an atom-thin layer pressed onto a crystalline iron lattice,
05:27a crust a billion times harder than steel.
05:31Your matter is fused directly into the star's structure,
05:35becoming an indistinguishable part of its super-dense makeup.
05:39This process demonstrates that the physical laws we experience on Earth
05:44are a product of our low-energy environment.
05:47Near a pulsar, those same laws govern a reality where biology and chemistry cannot exist.
05:55Pulsars act as natural laboratories for the most intense physics in the universe,
06:00revealing how matter behaves when pushed to its absolute limits.
06:04The collapse of a massive star creates a hyper-dense cosmic engine
06:11that stretches, warks, and obliterates the basic building blocks of reality,
06:17forever turning biological matter into cosmic energy.
