00:02That's what your tax dollars are paying
00:03for federal offices that are practically empty.
00:06And there's a law that says that's not allowed.
00:09Here's what's happening.
00:10Congress passed a law in January, 2025,
00:12saying federal agencies had to either be 60% full
00:15or give up their space.
00:17So auditors went building by building
00:19through the Department of Transportation.
00:21Out of nearly 200 offices, 89% fell short.
00:26The biggest ones built for around 600 people
00:28are sitting at about a third full.
00:30The auditor's infrastructure director said, quote,
00:33their existing footprint is too big, costs too much money,
00:36and they're not fully using it.
00:38And you are the one covering the cost.
00:40Rent, power, upkeep, all of it comes out of your taxes.
00:44Auditor estimates put the tab at roughly $370 million a year.
00:49A million dollars a day on rooms nobody's in.
00:51Now, almost everyone online agrees the space is wasted,
00:55but the fight is over the fix.
00:57The government's been canceling leases to save money,
00:59but critics warn that dumping space too fast
01:01means re-renting later at higher rates,
01:04and some agencies just don't have room
01:06for the staff to come back.
01:07The DOT agrees with the fixes
01:09and says it's still working on them.
