00:37Welcome to game one of the VB series of international matches, limited overs games, and it's a triangular series between
00:44Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
00:47This game between Australia and New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
00:51The conditions, well they're a bit mixed at the start, 31 degrees and a strong northerly wind and a promise
00:56of cooler conditions later on.
00:58Steve Waugh won the toss, decided to put New Zealand in the bat, and these are the two teams.
01:03First of all, the Australians, Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh going in.
01:07That's the old opening partnership.
01:09Then Ricky Ponny, Michael Bevan, Steve Waugh, Damian Martin, Ian Harvey, Shane Waugh and Brett Lee.
01:14Brad Williams making his debut.
01:16Glenn McGrath and Andrew Simons has been made 12th manager.
01:20Very good cricketer to be carrying the drinks.
01:22One of three Queenslanders not in the side today.
01:24Then the New Zealanders, one or two new names there.
01:28Mark Bridgerton, Lou Vincent, who made such a good impression in Perth in the test match.
01:32Stephen Fleming, Craig McMillan, Chris Cairns.
01:34Chris Harris, who's a very experienced performer in the middle of the order.
01:38Scott Styrus, Adam Perore, Daniel Vittori.
01:42James Franklin, a newcomer.
01:44And Shane Bond, a good young fast bowler.
01:47Andre Adams is the 12th man.
01:50We join now with no runs on the board.
01:52Nought for nought at the moment.
01:53McGrath is the bowler.
01:54Vincent is taking strike.
01:56Your commentators, Bill Laurie and Ian Smith.
02:00Threw him.
02:01That's well bowled.
02:02Good line.
02:03Good length.
02:04Good pace.
02:06Bowler Vincent.
02:07We saw the best of him in Perth.
02:08He hasn't actually been a vintage touch since then.
02:16Good line.
02:17We fired through the gap of cover.
02:19Good early call.
02:22Vincent off the mark.
02:27None for two.
02:29Southern end, a wonderful ovation for Brad Williams.
02:33Giving the new ball by skipper Stephen Waugh.
02:37Mark Bridgerton taking guard.
02:42That's a shot.
02:43That's supposed to hit it.
02:44Over mid-wicket.
02:45Not quite up the middle of the bat.
02:46It will run down the hill and that should be four.
02:51That's a good start by Bridgerton.
02:52It was short.
02:53Pulled it away beautifully.
02:54It's none for eight.
03:01In the air.
03:01There may be a bat pad there as well.
03:03It flew short of cover charging in.
03:10The cries of catch it from behind the wicket.
03:13Did go a long way off the seam.
03:15And it might have caught the bat on the way out.
03:17Certainly pad first.
03:24Oh, this good call.
03:25Throw a bit.
03:26The peepers end is safely home.
03:27Had to be a direct hit.
03:29It's all happening, Ian Smith.
03:31Well, taking them on, Bill.
03:32That's what I like.
03:33And there wasn't actually that much risk in this run.
03:35Once it beat McGrath.
03:39And that's why Vincent was on the back foot.
03:41He was waiting for it to get past the bowler.
03:43Now, Bridgerton was always home.
03:44And so was Vincent, really.
03:48He charges.
03:49Gets away with it.
03:50That's well played.
03:50That'll be four.
03:52Good start by New Zealand.
03:53Good positive cricket.
03:56You don't see this very often, do you?
03:58People charging Glenn McGrath.
04:00In his third over.
04:02Vincent came at him.
04:03And it wasn't really there to hit.
04:07Doesn't quite get hot.
04:08That's out.
04:09That's no ball called.
04:11Could be a run out.
04:11So he's safely home.
04:13Well, no ball was called.
04:16They did two runs.
04:19Now, this is interesting.
04:21Always something happens at the MCG
04:23when New Zealand are playing Australia.
04:24And it's happened early.
04:26Now, Bob Perry's the man at Squeal Egg.
04:28Is he the fellow that makes the call here initially?
04:31Darryl here's got the arm out very quickly.
04:33Is this...
04:35It's for the no ball.
04:36It's a front foot no ball.
04:38I thought it might have been for Hyde there at one point.
04:41Now, you can borrow a bouncer.
04:43Well, he's hit high at this level now.
04:45One per over.
04:46That was a no ball.
04:46He was over the popping, Chris.
04:47That was a fair call.
04:52Out.
04:52He's gone.
04:53This time.
04:54Richardson departs.
04:55Well caught.
04:57David Wittenkeeper.
04:58Good, Chris.
04:59Straight forward dismissal.
05:00Plenty of carry.
05:04And this is annoying, really,
05:06because it's the seventh ball of the over
05:08and they'd already picked up runs.
05:09How close in is this?
05:11Perhaps a bit close to play.
05:12The flat-battered shot, the cut shot.
05:14Cramped them for room.
05:15He couldn't really free the arms.
05:17And Bill Chris takes his first catch of the series.
05:20And Richardson makes the long walk back for eight.
05:23It's one for 20.
05:27New batsman, Stephen Fleming.
05:29He's at the non-strikers end.
05:31That was in the over from Glenn McGrath.
05:32It's one for 20.
05:35Oh, almost two for 20.
05:37That went straight through him.
05:44Pretty encouraging start from Williams.
05:46Pretty accurate.
05:54That's the idea.
05:57It was 140.5.
05:59It was quick, but he went for it.
06:00It was short enough to play the square cut or the hit the ball over cover,
06:03which I think that was trying to do, beaten by Pace.
06:06Australia just applying the pressure.
06:16Half a shout.
06:20That one's hit, Stephen Fleming.
06:24He won't actually go to the boundary either.
06:33Out.
06:35Mark Waugh.
06:37Had a little fumble at it.
06:39But as he does so well, kept his cool.
06:42Pulled in on the second attempt.
06:43And Stephen Fleming is gone.
06:46Well, three great deliveries.
06:48One which hits the deck stays a little low.
06:50One that hits the splice.
06:51And then this one.
06:51A readjustment in length.
06:53It's up there.
06:54Fleming's on the front foot.
06:55And just the extra pace and bounce off this Melbourne pitch
06:59gives Mark Waugh a chance to steal one from Shane Waugh.
07:02Waugh not happy.
07:04Either's Fleming.
07:05And he's out for one.
07:08And New Zealand two for 22.
07:13Craig McMillan makes his way out to the middle,
07:16replacing his captain.
07:17It's a 25.
07:19The strike rate is 71.
07:27Nice shot.
07:29Just about the best shot so far this afternoon.
07:33Through the covers, on the up.
07:35Craig McMillan's off the mark with a superb cover drive.
07:39We can see what Glenn McGrath's trying to do.
07:41He's trying to get them on the front foot
07:43and just seam it away.
07:44But it didn't.
07:45McMillan had it covered.
07:49This time Vincent goes over the top.
07:53Ian Harvey doing quite a bit of work down there.
07:56Third man.
07:57In front of his home crowd.
07:58And a very vocal part of the MCG.
08:01The Old Bay 13.
08:03They'll be looking after one of their local heroes down there.
08:11That will be four.
08:13I'm not sure it was right out of the middle from Lou Vincent.
08:17But he got it down.
08:18It raced away.
08:21Well, it doesn't have to be out of the middle
08:23if you're just going to leave two men there.
08:25McGrath just pitches short.
08:27You can see it's length that he's playing that shot on.
08:29It's outside off.
08:31He's sick of the dab cut that he's playing behind square.
08:33I'm going to play the pull shot.
08:35Because McGrath was just short enough.
08:39Three runs per over is the run rate after 11 overs.
08:49That's four again.
08:50Once again, it's in the air from Vincent.
08:53This time he's picked the gap just in front of point.
08:57My apologies to Craig McMillan.
08:59He's the one who's had a wonderful shot through the offside.
09:02Was in the air.
09:04A lot of foot movement.
09:06Replacement was good.
09:10He goes over cover.
09:12Well, he is seeing the ball well.
09:15That has raced to the boundary.
09:20Brett Lee replaces Ben McGrath.
09:23McGrath six overs, two for 23 in his spell.
09:30And that's out.
09:32And that's out.
09:32First ball.
09:33Brett Lee has picked up Lou Vincent.
09:35Lou Vincent looked to me like he was trying to follow his batting partner, Craig McMillan,
09:40in going over cover.
09:42He's got nowhere near the middle of the bat and ballooned a simple catch to the Australian captain.
09:47Well, he didn't have the commitment of his partner.
09:50Just half-hearted then decides, no, I might pull out of this, but goes half into the shot.
09:55And Steve Waugh, who had been hustling in, probably created the tendency to go over him by doing that.
10:01But Vincent can't do it.
10:03He's gone for 17.
10:04They're three for 41.
10:13New Zealand all-rounder, Chris Cairns, comes out to the middle.
10:17Average of only 29.
10:20Strike rate of 80.
10:24That's in the air as well.
10:26That one ball safely.
10:28Looked like a slower ball for Brett Lee, although maybe he just hasn't quite found his rhythm, Brett Lee.
10:38Oh, there, once again, the batsman was through the shot way too early.
10:44And for Chris Cairns, he's just getting the side screen right for Brad Williams over.
10:48There's still two men on the leg side to the left of screen.
10:51Just two, there's a huge gap there.
10:53Plenty in front of him on the off.
10:55And he bowls in the short one for a leg side shot.
10:58Can't produce it.
11:00Manages to fend it from his throat.
11:05He's gone on to that one.
11:08Looked like it was almost off the toe of the bat.
11:12Ian Healy said there's no one out there.
11:15Chris Cairns picks up a bound.
11:16Six from the over.
11:17Three for 49.
11:22Good shot through the covers for four.
11:24Beautifully placed.
11:25That one just a little bit wide.
11:28Brett Lee bowling it pretty fast.
11:30It's 145 kilometers an hour and whistling through the offside field.
11:36Pace isn't everything.
11:38If it's not well directed, then it's to the batsman's advantage.
11:41He just uses the boulder's pace.
11:50Oh, in the air.
11:51And this is out too.
11:51Yes, another one.
11:53The bouncing ball has got them hopping.
11:56That's the end of Cairns.
11:57That's a big wicket for the Australians.
11:59He's a dangerous batsman at the best of times.
12:03So almost 150 kilometers an hour right at the chest it was.
12:08And he hit it up in the air.
12:11Looked as though Chris Cairns was a little surprised there at the bounce.
12:16And really, in the end, he was just fending it off.
12:18It was almost a getaway from the shot.
12:21And Ricky Ponting gleefully accepting the catch in the gully.
12:25New Zealand in a lot of strife at four for 54.
12:32Scott Bernard Starris.
12:34He's a right-hand batsman and bowls medium paces as well.
12:39He's arriving out in the center now to take over from Chris Cairns.
12:43Caught by Ponting off the bowling of Lee.
12:45The fastest ball of the day.
12:48Oh, and he had no idea.
12:50No idea at all.
12:51That was also quick.
12:52150, that's also the quickest ball of the day.
12:55So Brett Lee really is turning it on here at the MCG.
13:01Right, so we've got a change now.
13:03Ian Harvey has taken over.
13:08Oh, it's a mix-up.
13:09This could be out.
13:10Oh, it's hit the batter, is it?
13:12I think it hit the batsman.
13:15Well, had Harvey managed to get back to the stumps there, which he, by the way, hadn't,
13:20it would have been right over the top and he would have been out by a long way.
13:24But I think the ball actually hit the batsman.
13:30Well, that's well played through the offside field.
13:32They'll pick up a couple here.
13:33Well, will it go all the way?
13:34It's running away down towards that boundary.
13:37Oh, well done.
13:38Just dragging that one back off the fence and so they ended up getting just three.
13:48Oh, and he's dropped him.
13:49Shane Warne's dropped him.
13:51That was in the air.
13:53It was to his left.
13:54It was also going very fast and Shane Warne got his hands.
13:58They may have just gone a bit too far.
14:01Oh, so Brett Lee continuing.
14:03Oh, and that one does bounce and that's it.
14:05He's caught behind.
14:06Yes, he's caught behind.
14:08Another very fast delivery.
14:11Bouncing.
14:12He tried to steer it away.
14:13There was obviously an edge on that one.
14:15Caught as clean as a whistle by Gilchrist.
14:19New Zealand are now in real trouble.
14:22Looked like a late decision there from Craig McMillan.
14:25And I think he was going to let it go until the last second.
14:27He just thought, I might be able to fiddle this over the top of the slips.
14:31All he did was get a little edge through to Adam Gilchrist.
14:34That ball really is bouncing quite a lot here.
14:37Particularly with Brett Lee firing them in quickly.
14:40New Zealanders not handling the bounce well.
14:43Are now five for 67.
14:49So there he is, Chris Harris, the new batsman.
14:51And he's got his work cut out here now.
14:55That's his average, 31 so far in his career.
15:01Oh, he's got that away nicely.
15:03Through the offside field.
15:05Little takes him cutting off this one.
15:07It's got there.
15:08No one cut it off.
15:08That's a lovely shot.
15:12And that tells the story.
15:15A lot of wickets and a struggle for the batsman.
15:27Brave effort down in the deep, but not successful enough.
15:31Nice piece of timing.
15:34Styrus and Harris are trying to pull it round.
15:36And this is down-legged side, helped on its way.
15:42Big, big dive.
15:49It's a wide call.
15:51So from that we can gather that Adam Gilchrist was wrong.
15:57And Shane Warne.
16:05He is so brilliant.
16:06Now, what do they call him the freak?
16:13Absolutely brilliant.
16:15Almost got it the first time when it was just a blur going through the air.
16:22You've got to be kidding.
16:25This is hit pretty well.
16:26Full face to the bat.
16:28One, two.
16:30Oh, magnificent presence of mind.
16:33And the reactions.
16:34That is an amazing catch.
16:36You'll see that time and time again today.
16:39Now, this is hit pretty hard.
16:41It's seam-up delivery.
16:42It's not a slower ball.
16:43The reaction to get both hands back.
16:45He's running away from the line of the ball.
16:47And then it stays for him to grab it with one hand.
16:52Styrus can't believe it.
16:54He's gone for 23.
16:55It's 6 for 89.
16:59New player.
17:01Adam Perore.
17:02Coming in at number 8.
17:12They've got away to a good start.
17:14Oh, there's another one gone.
17:15This is ridiculous.
17:17Oh, dear.
17:17Oh, dear.
17:20The wheels are falling off for New Zealand.
17:23The pressure applied by the pace of Brett Lee and McGrath.
17:27Perore run out.
17:28That's a big blow.
17:31Chris Harris just refused to listen to Adam Perore.
17:34We'll find out whether there was a call sending him back or not.
17:37Or Perore just decided on his own to go through with the run.
17:50Evidence is playing.
17:52Harris refused to listen or didn't hear Adam Perore who sent him back.
17:56But it's Perore that's been sent back.
17:587 for 94.
18:02The new batsman for a run out.
18:05Tragically from New Zealand's point of view.
18:09There's a chain wound coming in at the attack.
18:11And what a time.
18:18Oh, this is another mix-up.
18:20They'll get home this time.
18:21Hesitation from Perore.
18:23The call was from Harris.
18:30Good hit.
18:31Very good hit.
18:33And a lot of them.
18:34That's a way to play.
18:35Hit straight through the line.
18:36The ball was up.
18:38So Williams charges in from the member's end.
18:43That's a good shot.
18:44That's four.
18:45Straight through the line at the half-bolly.
18:48Chris Harris finds the rope.
18:53Glenn McGrath has got the ball as we thought he might.
18:56And it'll be interesting now to see how these two handle him.
18:59McGrath certainly got the ball to bounce a bit.
19:03Oh, and that's gone straight through them.
19:06Just short of a length.
19:07It was very well played.
19:10Well, he had a full go at it.
19:12I think it probably went through the fingers there of Steve Ward in the gully.
19:17Well, that's what's happened.
19:18You can see that those two wickets falling together there have slowed things up a little bit.
19:23So clearly these chaps have got the message now.
19:25They've got to just keep going.
19:26Although every now and again they've played some very loose shots.
19:30That's well played.
19:31He's hit that one away from outside off stump.
19:34Right off the middle of the bat.
19:36And there's not a very big gap on that onside.
19:38But he's found it.
19:40Harris playing that one well.
19:48And four.
19:50That's a good shot.
19:51Vittori in that area where he's very, very strong.
19:56Forward of point, behind point, and through that area.
19:59Plays it very well indeed.
20:04He's hit that one.
20:06So they're going to start going for it now.
20:07He doesn't strike me as if he's going to enjoy McGrath around the wicket.
20:14Australia would like to finish this off now.
20:15Seven for 143.
20:17This partnership worth 49.
20:19Warn continuing.
20:24Two back there.
20:26And they're coming back for the second.
20:27There's another fumble.
20:30Well, I don't think I've seen as many fumbles from an Australian side as this one today.
20:37Over keenness, over eagerness.
20:39Can't be anything to do with the ground.
20:41The ground's in magnificent condition.
20:43That was a take your eye off the ball job.
20:46Warn continuing.
20:48Two to go this over.
20:51And that one was off the edge, I think.
20:56Brett Lee has been really good all day.
20:59He really has.
21:07That's a way.
21:09Test Bevan in the deep.
21:10Got a strong arm, Michael Bevan.
21:14Quit across the turf in the outfield.
21:17Not the strongest arm.
21:18So Harris company back for two.
21:25Chance the bowlers in if McGrath hits.
21:27And he doesn't.
21:30New Zealand have had some real trouble out there with their running between wickets.
21:35On this occasion, Harris was the batsman.
21:38Hit on the body.
21:39It may have been an inside edge to start with.
21:40He didn't want the run.
21:41And Torrey did.
21:43Well missed by, oh, I'd say five or six centimetres.
21:47Harveys figures six overs.
21:49One made and one for 17.
21:54He's got that one wrong and it's through.
21:58Beating the captain at mid on.
22:02And it's not quite going to make it to the rope.
22:08One of those attempted jorkers.
22:11It was a nice, big, juicy full toss.
22:24And Daniel Vettori is certainly frustrating the Australians out there.
22:34Here's a chance.
22:35Brilliantly fielded from Shane Ward.
22:38Well, Daniel Vettori is the man who was run out, tragically run out.
22:44Chris Harris was the man who got a full toss.
22:47He hit it firmly into what he thought was the gap to Shane Ward's right.
22:51But Ward did brilliantly.
22:53Dived away to his right.
22:54Stopped it in the hand and got it back to Gilchrist.
22:57And ran Vettori out by a mile.
23:01Excellent save there from Shane Warne.
23:04Harris obviously thought that he'd got it past Warne.
23:07But he was wrong.
23:09Daniel Vettori didn't even look in Harris' direction as he was walking off.
23:13I think he's probably got designs on having words with him a bit later on.
23:17It's eight for 166.
23:22James Franklin comes at number 10 for New Zealand.
23:34Chance for Steve Waugh.
23:36And I feel there, if Steve Waugh had hit, Chris Harris may well have been run out himself.
23:41Well, the running today between most of the New Zealand combinations hasn't been good.
23:47Only two balls for his 49.
23:55That will be it.
23:56A half century.
23:57Chris Harris.
23:59The first of this VB series.
24:01And his fourth half century against Australia.
24:05New Zealand eight for 180.
24:36New Zealand eight for 188.
24:4241 deliveries ago was the last boundary.
24:52He's got that nice and straight.
24:56Back for two.
24:58This is not a bad golfer, actually, Chris Harris.
25:01First shot there.
25:03Swing and the mist.
25:04Like some of his drives off the tee.
25:10There's a big shout.
25:12Brett Lee's almost pleading.
25:15I thought I heard two noises, but it may just have been that it hit both pads.
25:21Brett Lee was very confident, as was Adam Gilchrist.
25:28He's got that one.
25:29There was a man out there, but he won't stop that.
25:33It's not great bowling for Brett Lee.
25:36He's got the fine leg up.
25:38He really can't afford to be bowling too short.
25:40But he has, and Chris Harris has got him away.
25:51He's got it fine.
25:53He's really wanted it, Chris Harris.
25:55He'll pick up just a single.
25:57And New Zealand will finish 8 for 199 after being sent in to bat by Steve Waugh.
26:04Chris Harris has remained the hero.
26:13Well, that turned out to be a very good performance by New Zealand.
26:16At one stage, it looked as though they'd be bowled out for 140 or 150.
26:20Then they got their mark of 170, and they got up, so they set the Australians a target of 200.
26:27Failure up the top of the order there with Vincent 17, 17 for Macmillan, Cairns on 10, and Styrus 23.
26:34And suddenly, Harris and Vittori put on 72, and that was the thing that got them up.
26:40And in with a bit of a chance.
26:42They've given the bowlers something at which to aim now.
26:448 for 199 in all for New Zealand from the full 50 overs and the bowling figures for the Australians.
26:51Glenn McGrath was brilliant early on, but not quite so later.
26:552 for 47 he finished with.
26:57Williams done for 31, did adequately in his debut match.
27:01Then Lee, 3 for 43.
27:03I thought he was outstanding.
27:04Bowled really well today.
27:05Fast and with good direction and good common sense.
27:08Harvey, 1 for 35.
27:10And Warren, none for 37.
27:13Warren spun the ball quite sharply.
27:14We'll be able to see what Vittori does when he gets a go.
27:18But it's 200 to make for the Australians.
27:2239.87 for Mark Waugh.
27:24He's got that average up well and truly.
27:27Started in the high 20s, batting 6 and 7 for Australia, but now at the top of the order,
27:31and has really flourished.
27:35Shane Bond, the bowler, Gilchrist away straight away.
27:41Down the ground on the onside is free for Mark Waugh.
27:45Two slips, a ring on the offside.
27:53And there's a fumble straight away.
27:56New Zealanders, I think I saw more fumbling from the Australian side tonight in the field
28:02than you would normally come across in three or four matches.
28:08That's a good shot.
28:09It won't quite go to the boundary, but it was still very well timed.
28:12It was just a little short arm jab from Gilchrist.
28:19And three more.
28:27Wonderful ball.
28:28It drew Mark Waugh into the shot.
28:31It looked as though it had a little bit of swing about it.
28:34It may even have moved a bit off the seam.
28:37Mark Waugh has gone.
28:38The first reverse for Australia, needing 200 to win.
28:43Shane Bond's first wicket.
28:45Hustled into the wicket.
28:46We talked about the breeze.
28:47His action's all over the place, but he'll take that outside edge.
28:51Mark Waugh.
28:53He's gone for one.
28:55Gilchrist is four not out.
28:56And Australia are one for five.
28:59Ricky Ponting is out the centre now.
29:01Mark Waugh, the man out.
29:03Caught by Pirora Aukbond.
29:05One for five, Australia.
29:30That's a beautiful strike from Gilchrist.
29:32He's very severe in anything short.
29:34And when the bowler tries to adjust, he just powers it away.
29:43Here's Franklin, left arm over the wicket.
29:50Franklin's inexperienced, he was brought into the side at the last moment.
29:54He will have seen Ponting playing his pull and hook shots.
29:58He doesn't need to drop anything short like that.
30:01At the moment, it's one for 25 from four overs.
30:06Bonus point up for grabs here.
30:14They're going to play every time they put the ball up in the slot for Gilchrist.
30:18There's three more there to the Australian wicket keeper.
30:35He's going to play every time because he's going to take a stroke.
30:51The New Zealanders didn't really look like hitting any sixes,
30:55but Ponting has hit that.
30:57The longest part of the ground from where he is,
31:01they've got a rope in on the eastern side of the ground
31:07in some 20 metres, but there's not much of a rope there.
31:11There's a big hit.
31:16Oh, another one.
31:18Wonderful stroke.
31:19Nineteen off the over.
31:22Shane Bond has just taken a wicket,
31:24and now he's gone for 19.
31:26It's one for 44.
31:35There's some wonderful cricket being played out there at the moment.
31:38Ponting first with the cover drives, pulls, and then a straight drive,
31:43and now Gilchrist pulling away over mid-on.
31:54Over the top of it.
31:57Straight over the top of it.
31:58We've seen that happen once or twice,
32:00especially when Gilchrist has got the bat in his hand
32:03because the ball arrives so much quicker.
32:08Well, there's some very bad fielding here from Mark Richardson,
32:12and then some very good thinking
32:14because he made sure he stayed cast on the deck
32:18and didn't have to chase it down to bay 13
32:20because he'd have copped some down there.
32:22So he stayed on the deck and waited until someone else retrieved it.
32:28So the run rate, 7.8.
32:31Oh, and he's got him caught and bowled.
32:33He's got him caught and bowled.
32:35It was a slower full toss,
32:37and he flicked it straight back to the bowler.
32:39But Cairns has got him.
32:40He's made the breakthrough here.
32:42Very important wicket.
32:44When he's bowling well, he bowls his slow ball well,
32:47and this is an ingenious piece of bowling
32:48to one of the world's most attacking players.
32:51Look at the look on Gilchrist's face.
32:53As soon as he makes contact, he knows he's been done.
32:55At that point, he hopes he doesn't catch it.
32:58It's his only chance of getting out of it.
33:00The look says it all as Gilchrist makes his way back.
33:05Hard hit, 23, but it's two for 63.
33:17Michael Bevan is the new batsman,
33:20and what a record he's got.
33:22Look at that average.
33:2557.
33:27So nine overs bowled,
33:28and it looks as if it's going to be Daniel Vittori.
33:30He's being introduced into the attack here.
33:34left-arm orthodox spinner.
33:40Yes, that's the problem.
33:41Anything there that's a bit short
33:43is going to be dispatched through that gap for four.
33:46It took him two balls to get it away,
33:49but he has this time.
33:54That's four.
33:55That's through the gap as well.
34:06He's had a good go at that one.
34:08He's got it away square of the wicket on the leg side for four.
34:12So that's an off-the-mark shot.
34:14Very good shot.
34:16Wasn't that short.
34:18It's been sizing up Chris Cairns as Michael Bevan.
34:23And it hurried on to him.
34:26Well, that's pulled away as well.
34:28That's another four.
34:29Too short.
34:31Definitely too short.
34:32They need wickets here,
34:33and the Aussies are handling the short ball well.
34:36That's two for 79.
34:40Wonderful batting performance by the Australians so far.
34:42Two for 85.
34:44Pinting in very good touch.
34:45Good runner between the wickets.
34:46Great support from Bevan.
34:48This big crowd seems some wonderful skill here from the Australians.
34:54I'm not sure why Cairns is persisting around the wicket to Michael Bevan.
34:58There's a red gully in there.
35:01Michael Bevan's a master of the one-day game.
35:04He gets a half-bar and he puts it away.
35:07He'll be very close to the ropes, and that's four.
35:10With a tremendous temperament.
35:13Frustrating.
35:13He can bowl the odd bouncer,
35:14but you give him a half-bolly,
35:16and he makes you pay.
35:19165 matches, an average of 57.
35:22He's gone for it.
35:23He's hooked it away, and that's four more.
35:26Frustration there from Chris Cairns,
35:27and he pays the penalty.
35:30Two for 95.
35:33Fine and killed at the MCG.
35:36Von continues.
35:37Conning whips him away beautifully.
35:38Just wide of the man.
35:39Is he?
35:39No!
35:39He's got him!
35:40That's a big wicket.
35:41May be frustrating there.
35:43The maiden over previously.
35:45Conning's caught a deep backward square leg.
35:47That's a big wicket.
35:48Two wickets for Von.
35:51Franklin really judged that pretty well.
35:53Not so easy when the wind's swirling around here at the MCG in the deep.
35:58Ricky Ponning threw his head back.
36:00He knew that he'd hit the ball very well.
36:02I think he thought when he hit it, it was going into the gap and away for four.
36:07He was very disappointed when he saw that the fieldsman had got around there and caught it.
36:12Big breakthrough for New Zealand.
36:14Three for 98.
36:17Steve Ward at the non-striker's end.
36:19Beppin glances off the thigh pad.
36:22It's a fine.
36:24A little bit two.
36:29It contained the boundaries, Bond and Victoria, as Richard Gonneau and Mark Taylor take up
36:34the commentary.
36:37Thank you, Bill.
36:38Shane Bond continuing.
36:40That could be out as well.
36:42Straight down his throat.
36:44A deep third man.
36:46This time, a very comfortable catch.
36:48James Franklin is the man.
36:50And Shane Bond has done it again.
36:52And he may just have got his side back in the match.
36:57Well, they've certainly posed a problem for the Australians as regards to the bonus point.
37:02They're just about breaking even at the moment.
37:04Franklin has done it.
37:06Four for 104.
37:10Damien Martin is the man to replace Michael Bevan.
37:14The crowd has come alive here at the MCG.
37:18A lot of people watching, I'm sure, are expecting Australia to cruise to victory here.
37:28This time, he's picked the gap.
37:30Damien Martin's the man.
37:32Well, it was in the air for a long time.
37:33And there's a man positioned some two-thirds of the way to the boundary at backward point
37:39for Damien Martin.
37:49And that's the sort of thing they'll do with the planning while they're standing around
37:54waiting for the crowd disturbance to subside.
37:56Steve Moore and Damien Martin will have been working out exactly how they're going to go about this.
38:02But this gives you some idea of where these two teams are.
38:06The New Zealanders' innings, well, it flattened out, didn't it?
38:09Never really got going.
38:11Australia got themselves going very well.
38:13And they've been able to coast a bit now.
38:20That one's gone down ground.
38:23The field's been a bit on quite wide.
38:25But they continue to chase everything back for the third.
38:28This is run out, Stephen.
38:29What have you done?
38:29And you've got to go back.
38:30You can't just keep going.
38:32Well, there we are.
38:34Never at any stage.
38:36Never at any stage.
38:38Well, now, then, they're all running down towards the field's been here.
38:42Stephen Moore definitely decided he was coming back.
38:44Martin never at any stage moved out of his crease.
38:50And Steve Moore refused to go back.
38:52He'll get two for this.
38:53So there's the first.
38:57Field is Vincent.
38:59Now, Steve Moore turns.
39:00He's going to push himself to get to that third.
39:02But Damian Martin, no.
39:03And Steve Moore, about eight metres or ten metres ago, knew Damian Martin wasn't coming.
39:08He doesn't go back.
39:10Adam Perore recovers.
39:12Huge return.
39:13Covers a lot of distance to get back to the stumps.
39:16And New Zealanders on top at this stage.
39:185'1".
39:31No ball call, and it's been smashed away for four as well.
39:39This certainly doesn't do any good when you go over that front line.
39:44Harvey getting that one away nicely.
39:50Oh, he's bowled him.
39:51He's clean.
39:52Bowled him.
39:53Neck and crock.
39:54Well, Cairns, he goes from a no ball.
39:56Short delivery for four.
39:58And all of a sudden, straight through the defences, this time of Martin.
40:02So, it's Harvey.
40:05Harvey, correction.
40:06Harvey bowled by Cairns.
40:07Have a look at this delivery.
40:09Right between bat and pad there.
40:11Back goes the off stump, and that's the response of the fast bowler.
40:17It's 6'4".
40:23Shane Warner's the new batsman.
40:25And all of a sudden, the bowlers are out there.
40:34Good bouncer.
40:35But it's going to fall safely.
40:37Now, was that off the helmet?
40:43There's been some very good short pitch bowling today, because most of it has been like this.
40:47Dead straight.
40:48Straight on the emblem, that.
40:50It's going to be Harris to continue.
40:52No wicket from nine.
40:56Oh, and he's done something silly, all right.
40:59Warren trying to hit Harris right out of the ground has missed.
41:03And there's another death rattle.
41:08I don't want to put the mockers on him, but you just had a feeling something like this was around
41:13the corner.
41:14It was out of the ground to be a hero, or through the gate to be a heel.
41:19And it's the latter.
41:21Chris Harris has bowled a nice straight one.
41:24Shane Warner's missed.
41:25He's gone for three.
41:26It's seven for 1.50.
41:31Well, Brett Lee, who had a pretty good summer with the bat in the test matches, now being called upon
41:37to do a bit here with the bat in the one-day game.
41:40It's got three deliveries left, Chris Cairns.
41:43I mean, I'd wager a little bit of what I've got left, but one of them might be the slower
41:51ball.
41:53Quick one.
41:54Slower one.
41:54Maybe two slower ones.
41:57Oh, and he's got him with a slower one.
42:00Brett Lee, I think, may have got a bit of an inside edge onto it.
42:03But the important thing is that it's hit the stumps.
42:06So New Zealand now, not only right in the game, but they've just got that outside chance of a bonus
42:13point.
42:16Mood in the black shirts is amazing.
42:19This is an ingenious piece of thinking for me.
42:22It wasn't actually on target.
42:24Brett Lee might count himself a bit unlucky that he got that much bat back onto the stumps,
42:27but it was the intention, the intention to draw him into a full shot with the change of pace that
42:33worked.
42:33So Lee goes back in a hurry.
42:37Not many against the name, in fact, none.
42:39It's eight for one, five one.
42:44Well, Brad Williams on debut.
42:46Didn't get a wicket, bowled quite tidily.
42:49Brad Williams is going to be on strike.
42:51And it is to be Shane Bond.
42:55From the members' end.
42:58He's cleared the offside, all right.
43:01Barry nearly cleared the road.
43:08Once again, over cover.
43:10So two fours in that over for Brad Williams.
43:14A good over for Australia.
43:16It's eight for 162.
43:1933 runs required of 66 balls with two wickets in hand.
43:24Vittorio coming back into the attack.
43:27Sweep, that's the question.
43:28He's given him.
43:29That's a big record.
43:30That's very well bowled.
43:31Great change by the skipper.
43:33He's a good captain for me.
43:35He takes you on.
43:35And they've got a big chance now to pick up a surprise victory at the MCG.
43:40Well, that was good bowling from Vittorio.
43:42He's bowled well all night.
43:43But that was a faster ball.
43:45And it beat Martin for pace.
43:49It was well bowled.
43:50Quicker delivery.
43:52And had it been the slower spinning delivery, wouldn't have got it.
43:56Nine for 168.
44:00Ben McGrath given a magnificent ovation.
44:03He's under pressure here.
44:04Nine for 168.
44:06Look at that.
44:08Pony was on fire early.
44:11Pilchrist went.
44:12And there was a decline as Bevan struggled to get the ball away early.
44:15Two quick wickets.
44:16And since then it's been wickets, wickets, wickets.
44:22It's a big hit.
44:23It's a big hit.
44:24Good use of the feet.
44:25It's gone a long way.
44:30It's another rope.
44:32William's showing a lot of common sense.
44:38Giving the strike to McGrath.
44:40McGrath playing his natural game.
44:42Hitting down the ground.
44:50Got in.
44:51That's out.
44:52Surely big noise.
44:53Yes, it's all over at the MCG.
44:55Big victory for New Zealand.
44:58Australia bowled out for 176.
45:01We don't know that McGrath has been in total agreement with the decision.
45:07It is Australia all out for 176.
45:11It may just have been disbelief that he hadn't got it off the middle of the bat
45:14and smashed it past points before.
45:16Victoria has taken the wicket.
45:18Perora has taken the catch.
45:21And New Zealand have won a brilliant victory here.
45:25They've fought back very well.
45:27Got themselves into a reasonable position.
45:29From what looked as though it was going to be a very, very low chasing total for the Australians.
45:37And I think this we are seeing there at the moment is an ooh-ah.
45:43That's a big win for New Zealand.
45:45176.
45:45And it took them only 42 overs to bowl out the Australians.
45:48Who got away to a bad start with the loss of Mark Waugh.
45:50Then recovered.
45:51Ricky Ponting batted very well.
45:53Played some lovely strokes for his 45.
45:54But only that last wicket partnership between Williams and McGrath gave them a bit of a chance.
45:59New Zealanders did wonderfully well in the field.
46:02I was very impressed with their bowling.
46:03They came back well.
46:05Three wickets for Bond after he'd been going for seven and eight and over.
46:08Three for Cairns.
46:09Vittori bowled very well once again.
46:11Two for 36.
46:12And Harris won for 17.
46:14Was the player of the match to go with his 63 not out.
46:16At the moment from the MCG.
46:18It's good night.
46:18This has been another presentation from NINE's Wide World of Sports.
46:26This has been another presentation from NINE's Wide World of Sports.
46:35I'll see you next time.
46:37Bye.
46:39Bye.
46:43Bye.
46:45Bye.
46:47Bye.
46:47Bye.
