00:00So I'm really nervous. Change really freaks me out. I'm terrified. I'm just
00:05going to channel that into excitement. I'm Sunny and I'm getting an undercut
00:09today. I've been trying to figure out what to do with my hair for the longest
00:12time. I've been growing my hair for donation for about seven years. It's been
00:16like years and years since I've expressed myself at all with my hair. I
00:20haven't done any heat styling, like literally nothing because it needs to be
00:23really healthy to donate. I love that I can continue being myself with this
00:29undercut. I can continue rocking the top knot but it's gonna look elevated. It's
00:33gonna look like I tried and not look like I didn't try it, which is usually what it
00:38looks like. I am Valerie and I am a hairstylist here at Harare. A gender
00:45neutral barbershop is some place that anyone can come in and feel
00:49comfortable. When they look in the mirror they like really truly feel like
00:53themselves. We feel like the industry is so binary and standard. For me like hair
00:59is just endless. You can do anything and everything. You never get bored. Me and
01:03Dre are gonna collab today on this look. Hi I'm Dre and I'm a barber here at
01:08Harare. I typically specialize in more precision type haircuts so like really
01:15tight fades. I do designs. Hey Sunny. Hey Dre. I am super excited for you to cut my hair
01:21today. Heck yeah. What are we doing? I am hopeful for a nice angular like undercut
01:27with some geometric designs and color. Sick. Let's do it. You have a lot of hair. I do have a
01:33lot of hair.
01:35We're gonna do like a triangle shaped undercut with some little flares at the
01:40edge to make it look like an arrow. To start create the section which usually
01:45takes the longest. You have to see that the tip of the arrow matches up to like
01:50the center of the neck and use that as a reference point as well as the ears you
01:55can use to make sure it's symmetrical on both sides. Once you have a clean section
02:01wrap it in a little rubber band and we're gonna snip it off with scissors.
02:11Once the bulk is off we can start to buzz. I typically start with a number two. That is
02:17my standard clipper attachment to begin an undercut because if you go longer than a
02:23two is too much hair to work with with the design and then anything shorter than
02:27a two you won't be able to really see what's happening because it'll be too
02:31short so there won't be any contrast. Once our canvas is clean we're gonna use
02:37it's like a barber pencil which is basically like a eyeliner pencil or like
02:40a crayon kind of to draw out the design. We're doing the mosaic so it's gonna be
02:46like triangles super scattered and like abstract. When doing the designs I have to
02:52be careful because the trimmers that I use are super sharp so the skin could turn a
02:57little red so you just have to be really careful with the bleach application
03:00afterwards. A sweet and low sweetener if you mix it in with the bleach it's a lot
03:05more gentle on the scalp so that's usually what we do to prevent any kind of
03:09chemical burn or scalp irritation. Once it's all etched out we should be ready to
03:14bleach and tone and color.
03:18So once Dre is done with the undercut I'm going to bleach it. Let that process until it
03:24is the color of the inside of a banana. And then once we get that color we will rinse
03:31it out, pre-tone it, and then after that we will color it with some fun colors.
03:41We will use smaller paintbrushes to paint the style on like pretty specifically.
03:55It's pretty crucial to rinse with very cold water. That's gonna prevent it from bleeding and running
04:02together and they'll stay separated and vibrant that way. After that we will start with the styling of the updo.
04:14I'm gonna crimp her hair to give some texture. It will help with also giving some volume.
04:30Doing like two braids up the back.
04:41Doing like a little anchor in the middle.
04:46Make a little bun with that anchor and then I'm gonna kind of like twist all the braids around to
04:53do a braided top knot.
05:07All right, you ready to see a new hair?
05:09Yeah, I'm super stoked.
05:13Oh dude, yes!
05:14Isn't it awesome?
05:15That's beautiful!
05:17Oh my god, that's just what I wanted.
05:18Yay!
05:19I feel like one of those cute little stained glass windows.
05:21I'm stoked!
05:23I'm stoked!
05:23Yay!
05:24I'm glad!
05:26I absolutely love it.
05:28I had no expectations.
05:29I just came into this really excited to see creatives be creative and I'm super stoked.
05:36It feels very textured.
05:37Like you can feel the design which is like wild to me.
05:41So on the back of my head I have a birthmark and actually a lot of people have the same
05:46birthmark in pretty much the same place.
05:48And a lot of people call it a raspberry or strawberry and I think it's actually pretty cute because it
05:53just blends in with all of the dual tones.
05:55I think it went awesome.
05:57I think Sunny is the perfect model for this.
05:59I'm so glad that they were willing to do an undercut.
06:03We had creative freedom and we kind of just like built off of each other and the design that Dry
06:08and I decided to do.
06:10This undercut is probably not going to change my everyday hair routine but it is going to elevate the results
06:16of said top knot.
06:18Undercut designs typically don't last more than two to three weeks.
06:22Although it's a great two to three weeks to show off your hair but yeah it is super temporary.
06:27That's what makes it more fun because you can change it up really often.
06:31I'm so glad that I decided to take the leap and do an undercut.
06:35I feel super free.
06:36I'm super excited.
06:38And if I need to look conservative I can just put my hair down.
06:40Alright, I'll see you later.
06:41I appreciate it.
06:41bye bye bye.
06:47You
