03:16Here is what you need to understand first. For the first two years of the Pacific War, Japan defended its
03:21islands the same way every time. Fortify the beach. Wait for the Americans to land. Then hit them with
03:27everything. Machine guns, artillery, and when all else failed, the bonsai charge. Hundreds,
03:34sometimes thousands of Japanese soldiers, screaming and sprinting straight into American fire. It was
03:40terrifying. It was brave. And by 1943, it was failing. At Tarawa in November 1943, the Japanese garrison
03:49fought almost exactly this way. They poured fire onto the beaches. They killed over a thousand Marines in 76
03:56hours. But when the last night came, the surviving defenders launched four bonsai charges in a row.
04:02And by morning, all but 17 of the 2,500 Japanese soldiers on the island were dead.
04:07The math was clear. The old way of fighting killed Americans, yes. But it killed every Japanese defender,
04:13too. And with American industrial power flooding the Pacific with ships, planes, and men, Japan could not
04:20afford to trade one garrison for one island, over and over, all the way to Tokyo. Someone in the Imperial
04:26General Headquarters understood this. And in the months after Tarawa, a research team was assembled,
04:32tasked with a single question. How do you defend a Pacific island so that the Americans bleed and bleed
04:37and bleed, without the garrison destroying itself in the process? The answer they found would change the
04:43nature of combat in the Pacific. And the first place the Marines would encounter it was a six-mile island
04:49in the Palaus that intelligence officers had promised would fall in three days. It didn't fall in three
04:54days. It didn't fall in three weeks. And what the Marines found underground there was something no
05:00American had ever seen before. September 15, 1944. Palelu, Palau Islands. Six miles of coral and limestone,
05:091,500 miles east of the Philippines. The 1st Marine Division, veterans of Guadalcanal,

08:58They attacked the ridge lines head-on, the way Marines had always attacked. By the end of the first
09:03week, the regiment had taken over seventeen hundred casualties. Some companies had lost more than half
09:09their men. The regimental commander had to be persuaded to accept relief. Three days,
09:14Rupertus had promised. On day fourteen, the Marines were still fighting for the same ridges. On day twenty,
09:20the Army's 81st Infantry Division was brought in to take over the assault on the Umer Brogel pocket,
09:26a shrinking but still lethal perimeter of caves and tunnels that the Japanese held with a stubbornness
09:32that defied everything the Americans threw at them. Bombs didn't work. Naval shells didn't work.
09:37Grenades bounced off the steel doors. Frontal infantry assaults produced casualties that were
09:42unsustainable. The old playbook, the one that had worked from Guadalcanal to Saipan, was useless
09:48against an enemy who fought from inside the earth. The Marines needed a new playbook, and on Palelu,
09:54in the worst possible classroom, they began writing one. It started with a question that sounds simple,
09:59but changed everything. If you can't go into the tunnels after the Japanese, what happens if you
10:04send something else in instead? The answer would arrive smelling of gasoline. By late October 1944,
10:11the fighting on Palelu had become something no Marine had experienced before. Not a battle,
10:16a siege. The Umer Brogel pocket had been squeezed down to a ragged perimeter roughly 400 yards across,
10:23but the Japanese inside showed no sign of breaking. They were underground. They had food,
10:28water, ammunition. And every time an American approached a cave mouth, steel doors slid open,
10:35and machine guns cut them down. The Army's 322nd and 323rd Infantry Regiments,
10:40men of the 81st Division, took over the assault from the exhausted Marines. And they did something
10:45the Marines hadn't had time to do. They stopped attacking and started thinking. Picture this.
10:51A sergeant watches his squad take fire from a cave that has already been destroyed twice by grenades.
10:56He crawls closer, maps the entrance, and notices something. The cave is breathing. Warm air is pulsing
11:03out of a crack 10 yards from the main opening. A second entrance, invisible from the front,
11:08connected underground. That sergeant doesn't charge the cave again. Instead, he sends a man around to the
11:14second opening with a 20-pound satchel charge and a 45-second fuse. The explosion doesn't destroy the cave,
11:21it seals it. The rocks collapse inward, blocking the tunnel. And the Japanese inside the main chamber,
11:27the ones who have been firing through that steel door for days, are now cut off from their escape
11:32route, their resupply, and their ventilation. Now the cave can be taken. Now the flamethrower has a
11:38purpose. Not to attack a fortress, but to kill the air inside it. This was the logic that changed
11:43everything. Do not fight the tunnel. Kill the tunnel. The innovations came fast after that,
11:49born not from textbooks or Pentagon planners, but from exhausted men figuring out how to survive one
11:55more day on a coral ridge in 115-degree heat. They brought gasoline trucks up the road to the edge
12:01of
12:01the pocket. Then they ran a pipeline forward, actual pipe, connected with booster pumps, and used it to
12:07spray napalm hundreds of feet ahead, directly into cave openings they couldn't approach on foot.
12:12Napalm didn't just burn, it consumed oxygen. The fire roared through the connected tunnels,
12:18sucking the breathable air out of every chamber the fuel could reach. Japanese soldiers who survived the
12:23flames suffocated in the dark. Corsair pilots from VMF 114, flying from the captured airfield less than a
12:30mile away, began dropping napalm canisters with a precision that hadn't been possible from altitude.
12:35They came in low, almost touching the ridge line, and lobbed unfused belly tanks full of thickened
12:41gasoline into the ravines. Once the fuel had pooled and seeped into the cracks, marines on the ground
12:47fired white phosphorus mortar rounds into the area. The ignition turned entire hillsides into furnaces.
12:53And then there were the bulldozers. Heavy caterpillar machines, brought ashore for airfield construction,
12:59were repurposed for something their designers in Peoria, Illinois, never imagined. Bulldozer operators,
13:05often sea bees, sometimes infantrymen who'd learned to drive on the job, pushed tons of coral rubble
13:11and sand directly into cave mouths. They didn't need to kill the Japanese inside. They just needed to
13:17bury them. Hold that detail. The bulldozer turning a cave into a sealed tomb. It will come back.
13:23What happened next on Peleliu tells you how effective these new methods were, and how far they still had to
13:28go.
13:29The Umer Brogel pocket held out until late November, over two months of continuous combat for a strip of
13:35coral no wider than four football fields. When the last organized resistance ended, Colonel Nakagawa sent
13:41a final message to his superiors. His forces had fought honorably and burned the regimental colors.
13:46Five survivors dug their way out of the sealed tunnels in February 1945. And the very last Japanese
13:53soldiers on Peleliu, a lieutenant and 26 men, did not surrender until April of 1947.
13:59Two years after the war ended, still underground, still in the tunnels, Peleliu taught the Americans
14:05two things. First, the Japanese had fundamentally changed how they fought. The Banzai Charge was gone.
14:12The beach defense was gone. The future of Pacific combat was underground. Second, the tools to fight
14:18that underground war existed. Flame, fuel, explosives, earth-moving machinery. But they had
14:24been improvised under fire, not designed for purpose. There was no doctrine, no training,
14:29no standard procedure. The marines who survived Peleliu carried that knowledge in their bones.
14:35Some of them would need it again very soon. Because while the Americans were learning on Peleliu,
14:391500 miles to the north, a Japanese general was studying the same lessons, and drawing very different
14:45conclusions. His name was Tadamichi Kuribayashi. He was 54 years old. He had once served as a military
14:52attache in Washington, driven across the American heartland, visited Detroit's factories and Texas
14:58oil fields, and written to his wife a sentence that no Japanese general was supposed to say out loud.
15:03The United States is the last country in the world Japan should fight. Now that man had been given an
15:08eight square mile island of volcanic rock and sulfur, 21,000 soldiers, and an order, make the Americans
15:16pay so dearly that they reconsider invading the homeland. What Kuribayashi built on that island,
15:22made Peleliu look like a rehearsal. Here is something most people miss about Iwo Jima.
15:27Kuribayashi did not simply build a bigger version of Peleliu. He studied what had happened on Peleliu,
15:33studied it carefully, and then designed a system meant to defeat the very tactics the Americans had
15:38just invented. Think about what the marines learned in the Umer Brogel. Seal the exits, cut off ventilation,
15:44pour fire inside, bury the entrances with bulldozers. Those methods worked because Nakagawa's
15:50caves were natural. Improved? Yes. Reinforced? Yes. But still limited by what the coral gave him.
15:57Most had one or two exits. The tunnels were short. The ventilation was whatever nature provided.
16:03Kuribayashi looked at that and asked, what if the caves had five exits instead of two? What if the
16:09tunnels ran so deep that napalm burned itself out before reaching the lower levels? What if the
16:14ventilation was engineered, not natural? And what if its shafts were hidden so well that no marine
16:20crawling on the surface could find them? That is what he built. He arrived on Iwo Jima in June of
16:251944.
16:26The island was volcanic. Black sand, sulfur vents, rock soft enough to cut with hand tools. Kuribayashi
16:34brought mining engineers from Japan to draw the blueprints. He assigned 25% of his entire garrison,
16:40more than 5,000 men, to digging. They worked in shifts around the clock, underground, in temperatures
16:47that reached 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Sulfur fumes were so thick that crews wore gas masks and had to
16:54be rotated out every five minutes. Some collapsed and never got back up. What those men carved out of
17:00that volcanic rock over the next eight months was unlike anything that had ever been built for war on
17:05Pacific Island. Eleven miles of tunnels connecting 1,500 underground rooms. Some positions went seven
17:12levels deep, 75 feet below the surface. The main communications center was a chamber 50 meters long
17:18and 20 meters wide, buried 20 meters underground, connected to the surface by a single 150-meter tunnel.
17:26Kuribayashi's own command post sat beneath a hill in the north of the island, encased in concrete,
17:32invisible from above. Every major position had multiple entrances and exits. Every tunnel branched
17:38and reconnected. If the Americans sealed one opening, the defenders moved through the network
17:43and emerged somewhere else. If napalm was poured into one shaft, the depth and branching of the system
17:49meant the fire could not reach the lower levels. The volcanic ash, when mixed with cement, produced
17:55concrete of extraordinary strength, walls four feet thick that could absorb a direct hit from a naval shell.
18:01And Kuribayashi added something Nakagawa never had, electricity. Gasoline-powered generators,
18:07buried deep, ran lighting and radio equipment throughout the network. The Japanese on Iwo Jima
18:12could coordinate their defense from underground, shifting men and weapons through tunnels the
18:17Americans couldn't see, appearing at firing positions that had been silent moments before,
18:21then vanishing again before the response came. This was not a fortress in the traditional sense.
18:27This was a living system, an organism that could take damage, absorb it, reroute, and keep fighting.
18:34And Kuribayashi gave it one final advantage. He forbade the bonsai charge, completely. No suicidal
18:40rushes, no glorious last stands in the open. Every man was to stay underground, stay hidden, stay fighting
18:47for as long as physically possible. He issued what he called the courageous battle vows.
18:52Your position is your graveyard. You do not leave it. You do not charge. You kill 10 Americans before
18:58you die. On February 19, 1945, 70,000 marines crossed the black sand beaches of Iwo Jima.
19:07The first waves met almost no resistance. Men jumped out of their Amtraks and started moving inland,
19:13sinking ankle-deep in volcanic ash that swallowed their boots. Some thought the naval bombardment had
19:18worked. Some thought the island was empty. Kuribayashi was watching from underground.
19:24He had told his gunners to wait. Let the beaches fill. Let the landing craft stack up. Let the marines
19:30crowd together in the open. As many as possible. As close together as possible. Then he gave the signal.
19:36Every hidden position on the island opened fire simultaneously. Mortars, artillery, machine guns,
19:43all pre-registered on the beach, all firing from inside the earth. The marines had nowhere to hide.
19:49The volcanic sand was too loose to dig a foxhole. The terraces above the beach were mined. And the

20:29ridge in the palaus. Now they were holding that playbook on a sulfur island, where the ground
20:35itself was hot enough to cook a sea ration, and the enemy was deeper, more connected, and more

20:46while men were dying by the hundred every single day. What they came up with started with a machine
20:51that was never designed for combat, and a question that a sea bee asked while watching marines die in

21:44thickened fuel 150 yards. The tank's armor could shrug off the machine gun fire that killed flamethrower
21:50men on foot before they got within 20 yards of a target. Eight of these tanks landed on Iwo Jima
21:55on the first day. They went into action on day three, and the effect was immediate.
22:00Picture this from the Japanese side. You are inside a concrete pillbox. You have been trained to hold
22:06your position until death. You have watched American infantry approach before, and your machine gun has
22:11cut them down in the open. The man with the flamethrower on his back. You have learned to shoot him
22:16first because the tanks on his back will explode. You have rehearsed this. You are confident. Then
22:22something new comes around the corner of the ridge. A tank, but its gun barrel does not flash. Instead,
22:28a jet of orange liquid arcs through the air, hits the rock face beside your firing slit,
22:33and turns into a wall of fire that rolls through the opening and fills your pillbox with burning
22:38fuel and superheated air. The concrete does not save you. The steel door does not save you.
22:44The four-foot walls that stopped a naval shell cannot stop liquid that flows through a slit
22:49three inches wide. Word spread through the Marine divisions within hours. Companies that had been
22:55grinding forward at 50 yards a day suddenly refused to advance until a flame tank was available.
23:01There were only four per tank battalion, eight total on the island. So they were pooled, dispatched from
23:07refueling points like ambulances responding to emergencies. The demand never stopped, and the Marines

24:59suffocating, the bulldozer would roll forward and push tons of volcanic earth over every opening it

25:29time. But Iwo Jima cost the marines over 6,000 dead and nearly 20,000 wounded. The methods worked,
25:36but they were still being invented under fire, still improvised, still paid for with lives that better
25:42preparation might have saved. There was one more island, one more chance to get it right. And for the
25:48men who would fight there, there was one advantage that no previous landing force had ever had.

34:09The tunnels provided the path. The Japanese engineers had paved the road for their own destruction.

40:42admiral had to be brought to the island to convince them that the war was over and that they could
40:46lay
40:47down their arms with honor. Tadamichi Kuribayashi died on Iwo Jima. The exact circumstances are unclear,
40:54most likely in the final days of March, underground, in the command post he had built 20 meters beneath
41:00the surface. He never sent a final message as dramatic as Nakagawa's. He simply stopped communicating.
41:07The tunnel system he had spent eight months building, the masterpiece of military engineering that was
41:12supposed to bleed America into a negotiated peace, became his grave. Kunio Nakagawa died on Peleliu in late
41:19November of 1944, after burning his regimental colors and sending a final message that his forces
41:26had fought honorably. He had been right about one thing, the Americans would bleed. He had been wrong
41:32about something more fundamental. He believed that making the tunnel stronger would make the defense
41:37stronger. He could not have known that every improvement he made, every exit, every branching
41:42passage, every ventilation shaft, was giving the Americans one more way in. The Marines who fought from
