00:00A U.S. judge has blocked a $10 billion settlement in a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump
00:05against the Internal Revenue Service.
00:08The judge said Trump misused the case to seek personal benefits from the government he now leads,
00:13describing it as an unprecedented example of self-dealing.
00:18The ruling means the proposed settlement cannot take effect.
00:22U.S. District Judge Kathleen also referred one of Trump's lawyers to state authorities
00:27over possible ethics violations.
00:30The agreement included immunity from tax audits and a proposed $1.8 billion fund
00:36for people who said they were targeted by what the administration called government weaponization.
00:42The fund drew criticism from both Republicans and Democrats
00:45over concerns it could benefit some of those prosecuted over the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
00:52Although the administration has since said the fund will not go ahead,
00:56it has yet to formally inform the court.
