00:02Nearly three weeks since bird flu was first detected on Australian shores, it's now been detected in native wildlife.
00:10CSIRO lab testing has today confirmed the H5 bird flu in a greater crest turn.
00:16The dead seabird found on Tuesday in Robe in South Australia's southeast,
00:21a coastal region that overlaps with areas frequented by migratory seabirds from Antarctica,
00:26which have also been detected with the H5 virus.
00:30In all there have now been 12 cases recorded across the country,
00:34but authorities are hopeful the native bird hasn't spread it elsewhere.
00:38When it was collected there was no evidence of other mortalities in that area
00:42and so we're still considering this an isolated case.
00:46Experts say the species mainly flies over water so transmission to poultry is less likely,
00:52but the situation could deteriorate in the bird's summer breeding season.
00:56The biggest risk they have is that because they breed on islands in dense colonies
01:00then you'll quickly spread across other individuals within the colony.
01:04Based on what we've seen overseas we could expect further spread.
01:07That's what we've been preparing for, preparing for the worst, hoping for the best.
01:10Sequencing testing is now underway to confirm whether the native bird found in Robe
01:15has the same version of the virus as the other migratory birds.
01:19We can't stop our native animals flying around, can we, and landing where they land,
01:25so we're just hoping that it is just one incident.
01:28Anyone who sees a dead bird is urged to contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline.
