00:00Once hailed as a champion of Tunisia's post-Arab spring transition,
00:05rights activist Sihem Benzadreen now faces 25 years in prison.
00:09The former head of the Truth and Dignity Commission has been sentenced on charges
00:14that include falsifying part of the commission's final report.
00:19I argue that these proceedings were unlawful because the law is very clear.
00:24They have no right to try the Truth and Dignity Commission nor its members, let alone.
00:29And today, the verdict was delivered 25 years in prison, plus an astronomical fine.
00:37Benzadreen denies the allegations, calling them politically motivated,
00:42and says she will appeal the 25-year sentence.
00:48Today's verdict is a first-instance judgment.
00:51I'm going to appeal against this judgment.
00:54The appeal will suspend the enforcement of the sentence,
00:56giving me a short reprieve of three to four months.
01:00This is because we are heading into the judicial recess.
01:03My appeal hearing will probably be scheduled for when the courts reopen.
01:13Human Rights Watch has condemned the sentence,
01:16saying it reflects President Kaye Syed's crackdown
01:19on human rights and justice in Tunisia.
01:22Human Rights Watch has people with disabilities and control.
01:25Human Rights Watch has been sealed.
01:26What, what, thearin' agreement?
