00:00Those of you that are college basketball fans and are Michigan fans, and a lot of you watch the show,
00:05love Michigan, Dusty May, who just led the Wolverines to a national championship in his second year at Michigan, is
00:13now out at Michigan.
00:15He has been wooed to the NBA. Michigan had the number one recruiting class in all of college basketball. And
00:23now here we are, obviously a few months before they start training camps and get into the season.
00:28And Dusty May, like so many before him, have decided to turn his back on the place that made him
00:35a nationally recognized name, a place where he won a championship at Michigan, was making about $5 million a year
00:42after redoing his initial contract when he got to Michigan based on winning a championship.
00:48And now every one of those kids that signed out to play at Michigan, according to NCAA rules, is now
00:55allowed to seek, quote unquote, employment or offers elsewhere.
01:00So you're now going to see the St. John's of the world. I'm sure all the other big blue, blue
01:05buds as well, get ready to start stroking checks.
01:08And Michigan basketball is now in danger of collapsing after a championship.
01:14Yes. Now, the one thing that could save him from that is making a home run higher because now Michigan
01:20can poach and it'll happen at the next school.
01:23But hypothetically, I don't think they would do it. They could call Patino, get him to come.
01:29Which won't happen. Won't happen. I'm saying, but he could, they could call anybody in the country, try to get
01:32them to try to keep the guys that they have.
01:35They can't. It's the best job opening in a long time.
01:39They got the best recruiting class. They just won a championship. They sell out every single game.
01:46They make tons and tons of money. They got plenty of money to offer a coach.
01:50They're just paying maybe five million bucks a year. But it shows you again, every time you want to take
01:55a shot at a player for deciding after a year, let's say,
02:00you know, to enter the portal and go see if there's a bigger or better offer out there for him.
02:05And a lot of people get mad at the players. The coaches are worse. They always have been worse.
02:11They always will be worse. We see it in college football, obviously, even more than I think we see it
02:17in college basketball.
02:18But this is a this is a major, major news event and a major, major negative for Michigan alumni, Michigan
02:26Wolverine fans.
02:26You have just lost your championship coach.
02:29The other part is they worked out the deal right after the tournament in April, but he didn't sign it.
02:34And then when he was asked about it, he said out loud to all the people, we worked out the
02:39framework.
02:39I'm going to sign the deal in July. And then surprise, surprise.
02:43He now doesn't have to pay back anything.
02:46He doesn't have to worry about any buyout things that he'd be responsible for.
02:49The Mavericks would be responsible for because he technically agreed to the deal, but never signed the deal.
02:55That's the other dirty part about it. The players have all had to sign their letters of intent and had
03:01to wait for him to leave.
03:02They've been ordered to leave. In his case, he committed to those players that he was going to be there.
03:06Michigan said, how much money do you want? OK, that's how much you want.
03:10Here it is. You want an increase in this and that and all this stuff.
03:14He wanted a different private plane for recruiting. He got that.
03:17He conveniently never signed a deal with the promise of signing in July and takes a new job before July
03:23even gets here.
03:23Yeah, listen, he leaves Michigan in a bad spot on one end.
03:26The other end is most teams have already spent their NIL money for basketball for the 26-27 season.
03:34So it's not as – look, there's going to be opportunities because when you have the type of recruiting class
03:39that Michigan had,
03:40you know, guys that are willing to write checks are being called right now.
03:43Do we have any extra money we can spend?
03:45Because all of a sudden Joe Blow is available.
03:49And for all the schools that may have come in second place for certain players that decided to go to
03:54Michigan,
03:55whether it's because of Dusty May, whether it's because of the money, whatever the case may be,
04:00those kids are now available.
04:02And if I'm a head coach and athletic director, I'm on the phone right now with my biggest booster saying,
04:07hey, look, do you have another couple million bucks you want to spend?
04:11Because we can now go get player X, Y, Z.
04:14I'm trying to process this now from a Michigan fan standpoint.
04:18If you're a Michigan fan, are you pissed at Dusty May because he's leaving you in the lurch at post
04:25-NIL signings
04:27and you're going to lose most of your recruits most likely?
04:30Or do you come out and say, Dusty May brought us a championship?
04:36That's the cost of doing business these days.
04:38I'm not mad at Dusty May.
04:40I would think I'd be livid at Dusty May.
04:43First off, it's like he was here for 20 years and finally won a championship and you want to wish
04:48him well.
04:49Right.
04:50The guy was barely at Michigan.
04:52He's a mercenary.
04:53Yes.
04:53Pure mercenary.
04:54I would think Wolverines fans would be livid.
04:56The other part.
04:57Especially if they now lose recruits.
05:00Now, maybe they don't.
05:01Maybe a kid making two, three, four million bucks at Michigan this year is happy being at Michigan,
05:07regardless of who the coaches.
05:09And by the way, maybe it's one of the assistant coaches that recruited a certain kid and not Dusty May.
05:15That being said, Dusty May prior to today had a great reputation amongst the kids that played for him throughout
05:22his coaching career.
05:23And now he's going to the NBA where he becomes the Dallas Mavericks head coach.
05:28And obviously the Dallas Mavericks, you know, trying to rebuild after losing Luka, after losing now Anthony Davis and on
05:36and on and on.
05:37I think it's probably a pretty good hire for the Mavericks.
05:40It is.
05:41College game being a lot different than the pro game.
05:43But I think if you're Michigan, think about what's happened in the last few years.
05:48Harbaugh wins the national championship.
05:49Peace out.
05:50Goes to the NFL.
05:52You replace him with Sherron Moore, who was on his coaching staff.
05:55Sherron Moore, of course, has wayward eyes for the ladies.
05:59Winds up getting arrested.
06:00He gets fired.
06:02And now Michigan football has tried to rebuild from the scandals that they've had, right?
06:07Yep.
06:07Now you've got the same thing outside of the scandals, going out with Michigan basketball.
06:13Yeah.
06:14It's got to be tough.
06:15It's got to be tough.
06:16I think the fans, it will be based on who they hire.
06:20If they hire an exciting coach, they'll say whatever with Dusty May.
06:24At the moment, they have to be furious because of the timing.
06:27Most times when this happens, it would have happened in April.
06:30Yes, but then they would not have recruited any of the kids they have.
06:34So, in other words, Dusty May stayed, recruited great.
06:38Because he won a championship, kids want to play for a winner, right?
06:41But it depends on who you would have hired.
06:43There were more guys available in April than there are now.
06:46Oh, for sure there were.
06:47As far as coaches as well.
06:49Absolutely right.
06:49And the other part is, with this is, he knew this is what he was doing.
06:55That's why he didn't sign the deal.
06:56Of course, they didn't start talking today.
06:58They've been talking for months to get a deal done today.
07:02And that's the part that's dishonest because you know what these guys say to the college kids.
07:06You're talking to anywhere from 18 to 21-year-olds about loyalty and keeping your word and all that talk.
07:12And he knew in the back of his mind if he got an offer, he was out of here.
07:16And it's the dishonesty that I don't like about it.
07:19I understand it's business, but it's not business for all the kids.
07:22Yes, they might be getting paid, but they're thinking college dreams.
07:25Go win a championship.
07:27Be on a college campus.
07:28All the fun things that an 18-year-old wants to do.
07:31He's thinking, yeah, I ain't going to be here.
