Part 1 of 4 of the rarely shown children's TV classic. Disappointed at not being able to go home from school for Christmas, young Tolly is sent to stay with his great grandmother at the old ancestral home of Green Knowe instead. Having never met her before or seen the ancestral home, he is fascinated by his surroundings and the old stories that she has to tell him about it's past. But as he stays there, he becomes more aware that the place may very well be haunted...

05:57This car don't have to float.
05:59Is it far?
06:01No, not very.
06:03Green North stands almost in the middle.
06:05The river runs alongside.
06:07You, uh, you won't be able to get out until the floods will go.
06:13Oh, well, I'll get in, then.
06:33Can you swim?
06:35Yes, sir.
06:36Are you 20 strokes last summer?
06:38No.
06:39You'll have to do better than that.
06:41Perhaps if you feel yourself a-sinking, you can manage a few more.
06:49But it's getting quite dark.
06:50How will I know where to swim to?
06:54Now, that will be a problem, won't it?
06:56This is all no should have thought of that.
07:10Is that you, Master Tozlan?
07:14Is that you, Master Tozlan?
07:15Is that Mr. Bogus?
07:16Aye.
07:31Well, Master Tozlan, I knew your mother when she was just about your size.
07:36Yep, I'll take that.
07:37Right, lad, in the boat.

08:17I was going to swim.
08:42There it is, Master Tozlan.
08:44There it is, Master Tozlan.
08:57It's no dark.
08:59Green, no.
09:30Let's get in.
09:32I'd love to see your great-grandmother's face when she claps eyes on you.
09:59I'll tell her you're here.
10:21All right, Master Tozlan.
10:25All right, Master Tozlan.
10:26All right, Master Tozlan.
10:52So, you've come back.
10:55Why do you say come back?
10:58I wondered whose face it would be of all the faces I've known.
11:03They always come back.
11:09You're your grandfather.
11:13Did he live here?
11:15Yes.
11:16So do you.
11:17But I live at St. Boniface Academy.
11:21For a whole year.
11:23I never knew you were in England.
11:25And your house was waiting for you here the whole time.
11:29Is it my house too, then?
11:31I mean, partly.
11:33Of course it is.
11:35Partly, as you say.
11:37Now, come and sit down.
11:46You even have the right name.
11:49I'm glad you're at Tozlan, because I should always be calling you Tolly anyway.
11:54That's what I called your grandfather.
11:58What should they call you at school?
12:01Towelzer.
12:03And at home?
12:04My stepmother calls me Toto.

12:37Castles were meant to be lived in.
12:40Do things happen in it?
12:46I'm glad you've come.
12:48It would be lovely for me.
12:54I came in the boat with a lantern.
12:56I think the house was Noah's Ark.
12:58Oh, the Ark.
13:00You played it with the Ark.
13:04What sort of things happen in it?
13:07This house?
13:08I'll wait and see.
13:13I'm waiting, too.
13:15To see what happens.
13:17Now, you're here.
13:19Something will, I'm sure.
13:22Now, tomorrow?
13:24You can explore the inside of the house.
13:27Up and down.
13:29Learn your way about it.
13:32Be at home.

17:55All the children call it the ark.
17:58Your grandfather did.
18:00He learnt it from his father, who learnt it from his, and so on, right away back.
18:06Granny, when I was in bed, I heard the horse rock.
18:10But when I looked, it was quite still.
18:12Oh.
18:13And did the mouse squeak?
18:16No! Does it?
18:17You seem ready for anything.
18:20That's something.
18:21Now, get dressed and come down for breakfast.

19:02That was my mother's name.
19:04It's my name, too.
19:08Is the doll's house Linitz?
19:10No, it was mine when I was a little girl.
19:15I was brought up by an uncle.
19:17Because I was an orphan.
19:19Didn't you have any brothers or sisters?
19:21No.
19:23I used to pretend that I had.
19:25I was lonely.
19:27That's why I put four beds in the doll's house.
19:33They were looking at me.
19:35I'm not surprised. They must be tired of looking at me.
19:41The boy with the sword is Toby.
19:45Toby?
19:46And the one with the flute is Alexander.
19:48And the little girl is Linit.
19:52Oh.
19:53More toast.
19:59Granny, may I still play with the mouse?
20:03Oh, I don't think Toby would mind.
20:05Just mind you don't lose him.

20:58he's not in my way at all but I expect he'd like to go. yes please. do you want to
21:02read the newspaper now?
21:04gracious no child. why would I want to do that? the world doesn't alter every day.
21:09ain't he the fair spit of his grandfather? might be the same come back.
21:14I think he belongs. it's all hidden in him somewhere.

22:23they'd shake their bridles. oh they were a proper rifle.
22:27who? your grandfather Mr. Totlanders was. he was a raring with horse.
22:34he could do anything with them. just by breathing secrets down their ears.
23:01and now we are going to get in.
23:42Master Toesland, I'll trust you to get into the haunted stall.
23:48Was you looking for Master Toby's horse?
23:51Whose horse?
23:52Oh, I ain't no good at history.
23:54One of the young masters, just like you.
23:58Folks do say they can hear his horse at night, whinnying for him.
24:03Have you ever heard him?
24:05Sleeps a tome, I tell you.
24:06And that's where I dreams.
24:10You haven't put any hay for him.
24:12Ghosts don't eat hay.
24:14They might like to pretend to.
24:16They might at that.
24:19Come on, time for your tea.
24:23There ought to be hay.
24:41Show me your hands.
24:44Now turn around so I can see if you've got dirt on your trousers.
24:48Oh.
24:54Granny, did Toby have a horse?
24:57Boggis has been telling you stories.
25:00Yes, Toby had a horse.
25:03Toby had Feste.
25:06And Alexander had a white pony called Bucephalus.
25:10Poor Lynette wasn't allowed a horse of her own.
25:13She had to ride in a pannier behind her mother.
25:16All boggis.
25:18What colour was he?
25:20Boggis?
25:20No, Bessie.
25:23Beautiful golden colour.
25:25White mane, white feet.
25:28And he jumped like a cat.
25:30He and Toby loved each other more than anything on earth.
25:35I think a deer seems more magic than a horse.
25:38Beautiful fairy tale magic.
25:40But a horse that thinks the same thoughts as you do
25:44has like strong magic wine.
25:49Did you ever hear him?
25:51Who?
25:52Of Feste.
25:53Oh, of course.
25:56Generally it's sundown.
25:58There were other horses here,
25:59but I could always tell Feste's voice.
26:03It was quite individual.
26:09Is Myron too far to him?
26:11If he, I mean, if he did...
26:13I don't think it's too far.
26:16Then, excuse me, please.
26:21Granny, why is it called Green Noah?
26:26A lady on the train told me to watch out for Green Noah.
26:29I thought it was Green No.
26:31It was for our family.
26:33It got changed a long time ago.
26:37Why was it changed?
26:38No more questions tonight, Tolly.
26:42I don't believe I ever heard Feste from here.
26:48Granny.
26:48Yes, my dear.
26:49I feel as though I lived here always.
26:52Yes.
