Iranian ambassador to Mexico Abolfazl Pasandideh accused the United States on Saturday of denying visas to 15 members of the Iranian delegation that will participate in the 2026 World Cup, and requested FIFA's intervention to ensure compliance with the commitments made by the host countries of the tournament.

The diplomat reported that the affected individuals are senior officials of the Iranian Football Federation while speaking at a press conference in Tijuana. Despite the inconveniences, he stated that they will make every effort to ensure their participation in the world tournament.

"In this case, of these people who have not wanted to obtain the visa, there are 15 people and most are team managers, part of the technical staff as well, and obviously if they do not show up, it will be a challenge for our team. But well, those who are there are making every effort, but we will resist much morere," he indicated.

Pasandideh highlighted the importance for Iran of participating in the World Cup, noting that the event represents an opportunity to promote the values of sport and understanding among nations.

"The presence of the Iranian national football team in the World Cup is an opportunity to showcase the sporting capabilities of Iranian youth and, at the same time, strengthen friendship and understanding between peoples," he asserted.

Pasandideh emphasised the diplomatic nature of the event. "We believe that sports should be a bridge to bring people together and not a tool to impose restrictions or exclusions. Sports should unite nations, not separate them," he assured.

The ambassador then requested FIFA to intervene with the relevant authorities to ensure the presence of the Iranian team in the matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle.

Additionally, Pasandideh expressed his gratitude to the government of Tijuana for hosting the base camp of the national team. According to the plan, the players will travel from this border city by air to the United States and later return to Mexico.

"We are sure that the people of Tijuana, who have generously and affectionately opened the doors of their city to the Iranian National Team, will also hold a special place in the hearts of the Iranian people," the ambassador pointed out.

The visa issue arises amid persistent tensions between Tehran and Washington and could complicate the participation of the Iranian team in the initial phase of the 2026 World Cup, whose debut is scheduled for June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
