00:35Surreal to think about all of them around the same age, having the success that they all had at the
00:41same time,
00:41and over so many years, Gilles Simon being the fourth.
00:46Oui, alors, oui, il manque un musqueteur.
00:50As you were just saying, you're saying here, one of the musqueteurs is not here.
00:57Gilles Simon sent a video message.
01:11Mais, you know, my heart is with you.
01:36Ah, if we could go back in time.
01:39What name would you have liked for us to have been given,
01:43maybe rather than the musqueteurs.
01:46J'ai entendu les 4 fantastiques derrière.
01:49Là, ça pourrait être les 6.
01:50C'est un peu trop.
01:52The Fantastic Four.
01:53It's too much, he said.
01:54It's too much.
01:55Too much for Joe.
02:35From the original musqueteurs,
02:37the French players back in the 30s,
02:40when that was first used.
02:42That's right. Back in the 20s and 30s,
02:44I was reading up about it.
02:44Yeah, even the 20s, you're right, yeah.
02:47When France first won the Davis Cup.
03:24If you just joined us.
03:25This is Matt Pecora, who's asking the next question.
03:27He's a French singer.
03:28A friend of Gale.
03:32He's asking about when they've played against each other.
03:51Yeah, so basically that...
03:53Would they play the same way against each other as other opponents?
03:57Yeah.
03:58100%.
03:59Ces deux-là, ils me connaissent par cœur, donc...
04:02Beaucoup de vis.
04:04Beaucoup de vis.
04:05Surtout Richard.
04:06Richard.
04:06Richard, t'es facile.
04:08Facile à prendre.
04:10He's saying it was easier to wind up Richard
04:12and get into his head.
04:16He said I knew that.
04:20I worked my way into his head.
04:23He said it was hard against Joe.
04:28He's like my big brother.
04:33Wow.
04:34Since age 13 years old.
04:36Yeah.
04:37They shared rooms.
04:39Same tennis camps.
04:40Same training.
04:41Voilà.
04:41On avait des chambres séparées.
04:44He's just laying aside.
04:45They were in separate rooms.
04:47When you're in the juniors, you often don't.
04:49That's right.
04:50You can be four in the room.
04:53Just here.
04:54Just here.
04:54There was the first one.
04:55There was a mini tennis.
04:56And I didn't know it.
04:57I was stronger than him.
04:58You know.
04:58You know.
05:01But he's just reminding us that he was better than Gale
05:04when they were younger.
05:08But it was hard to beat him.
05:10And he was saying he was a malicious player.
05:16Even in those days.
05:18It's an adventure we've had.
05:19It's exceptional.
05:20And you know very well, Matt,
05:21there's someone we can't make sure.
05:23It's the public.
05:24Yes.
05:24And when you see the public here tonight for him,
05:26it's for him.
05:26There's only him who can do something like that.
05:28You can see that the public's not lying.
05:30And the public's all out here for him tonight.
05:32That's what he says.
05:34For those who aren't aware of it,
05:36it's the first time in the history of the tournament
05:38that Roland Garros accept a homage like that
05:42and a night like that for a player.
05:43And they did it for Gale Monfils.
05:44The first time in the history of the tournament
05:47that Roland Garros and the French Tennis Federation
05:50have handed over the center court
05:51for a player to organize with them a celebration like tonight.
05:55So we're showing a historic moment here.
05:57Yeah, showcasing how special that he is to them.
06:08Matt's saying, you know,
06:09we used to play FIFA on the video game, video games.
06:12Big gamers.
06:15Okay, there it goes.
06:19Joe's there.
06:21I'm thrashing him all weekend.
06:24He didn't win a game all weekend.
06:26Just before I left.
06:30He said, hang on.
06:31One more game.
06:33He said, and we're going to bet money on it.
06:40Joe looked at me and raised an eyebrows
06:42to say, you know, maybe not a good idea to bet.
06:47But I think if he does it.
06:49He knew what he was doing.
06:52He knew what he was doing.
06:54He knew what he was doing.
06:55He knew what he was doing.
07:14And he, in that game, decided he played with his goalkeeper.
07:19He couldn't believe his strategy.
07:23Yeah.
07:24Playing defense with the goalie like that.
07:26Because he knew that he had one chance on two to beat the penalty
07:29so that you knew that this guy is vicious when he plays.
07:33He's saying he's just a malicious player.
07:36Because of whatever game you were playing with him.
07:38And then they go to penalty kick.
07:39Yeah.
07:40And he knew he was 50-50 then.
07:42So even though he knew that Matt was a better player,
07:43he had his chance.
07:44I was there.
07:45And it was funny, because we were all at the beginning of our careers.
07:52And you, especially, Matt, you were also at the beginning of your career.
07:55Yeah, we were all younger then, at the beginning of our careers.
07:58And Matt, the same for you.
08:00And we still remember those moments now.
08:10And they experienced so much of life together.
08:13Starting from such a young age.
08:15Before they even made it big.
08:16All of them independently in their careers.
08:18I thought, OK, well, it's good.
08:19He's going to start with a low head.
08:21I remember that you were nervous.
08:23You said, we don't have the right to play like that.
08:25You talked about being anti-sportive.
08:29You said I wasn't a real sportive.
08:32Matt accused him of cheating, more or less.
08:35And he didn't speak to him for a week afterwards.
08:38Not being a good sportsman.
08:41But he always has a strategy in his head.
08:44Matt is saying about Gail.
08:49The strategy is a strategy.
08:50That's right.
08:51Hey.
08:51He always found a way to win.
08:53It's one or two questions from the crowd.
08:54I don't know if he's coming up now.
08:57Let's have a look.
08:58She wasn't from the public, that's right.
09:02Gail, if your career was a film,
09:05would it be a comedy, an action film or a Marvel?
09:07If your career was a film,
09:09would it be a Marvel film, a comedy, an action film?
09:12What kind of movie would it be?
09:14Would it be a comedy, an action film or a Marvel?
09:17A comedy in Marvel.
09:20A comedy in Marvel.
09:21OK.
09:22A Marvel film but a comedy as well.
09:24A comedy Marvel.
09:25A comedy Marvel.
09:25It's not a joke.
09:27OK.
09:27That's a new genre.
09:28I think that in a comedy, there's a lot of feelings.
09:34It means that it's a laugh, but that it's a little emotion.
09:37I think that in a good comedy, we feel a lot of emotion.
09:42And I'm a player who plays a lot of emotion.
09:45He plays with a lot of emotions.
09:46And in a comedy, there are lots of emotions.
09:49Laughter, but also other emotions.
09:51So he wants some action, but he wants, yeah.
09:53He wants to be some feelings in that film of his life.
09:57It was hard for example, the comments from journalists and stuff.
10:01It was very high too.
10:03And that's what caused us to have crazy moments.
10:06Richard, what regard do you have on that?
10:07Can we be a tennis player when we live as high and low as powerful as Gaël?
10:14The question is that Gaël has highs and lows.
10:18He's not always being able to produce the same performances week in, month out.
10:25And Richard is saying, yeah, but that's the kind of guy he is.
10:27He has highs and lows.
10:28And that's why the crowd comes out to watch him.
10:30Yeah, because when he is good, he's damn good.
10:32And that's why the crowd comes out to support him.
10:37And he's proud to be his friend.
10:40And they know that he has always given his best.
10:45There's a match that really symbolizes that.
10:46We talked about it with Matt earlier.
10:48It's your return here against Baez.
10:50Who was there?
10:51Aplaudissez if you were there for this match.
10:52You finished at 2 o'clock.
10:54His comeback match against Baez.
10:56That was unbelievable.
10:58He's supposed to keep on the crowd that we were here.
11:00I remember that.
11:01He almost went down 5-0 in the fifth set.
11:04One point away from him.
11:11He's down 4-0 and won 7-5 in the fifth.
11:15With the crowd behind him.
11:18With the crowd behind him.
11:18You are magic.
11:19The public here is just incredible.
11:31He can't find the words to describe the support that he got from the crowd here at Roland Garros.
11:37Indescribable.
11:38Magical.
11:42That match was only a first round game but for me it's like a final.
11:46That's sweet to hear him say that.
11:47I didn't win a lot of matches.
11:49No.
11:50All the public at Roland Garros supported me.
11:52It was incredible.
11:53He's running as he was a young dad at that moment.
11:55He hadn't been winning many matches.
11:57With the crowd support.
11:58I managed to roar him across the line to win that fifth set.
12:02Because you are a little known for your highlights and your extraordinary exchanges.
12:08If you had to take a exchange, a point in your career.
12:13After all those moments, if you could just retain one match or one moment, one shot.
12:17What you did technically, I don't know.
12:20But if you had to take a one.
12:23That's a hard question.
12:24It's a tough one, isn't it?
12:25In fact, he talks about a match, right?
12:27In fact, he talks about a match, right?
12:30In a match, right?
12:31In a match.
12:31A rally or...
12:32A famous shot making.
12:33It's simple.
12:34Because I think he's...
12:36To do it in a match, I've had the chance to do it, but I think it's the Smash 360.
12:41Because it's really not easy.
12:42A 360 Smash.
12:43Yeah.
12:44That is his signature shot.
12:46When you think about Gael, you envision that in your head.
12:50To finish this round table, Richard, Joe...
12:53And that's a real response of a showman as well, isn't it?
12:57You know?
12:57You have to tell him something.
13:00If it was, for example, the last time you could address something, what would you say?
13:04We're going to pluck up the heartstrings now.
13:07Asking Joe and Richard to...
13:10If this was the last time you ever got to speak to him, what would you say?
13:14What's going on?
13:15Apparently, the crowd has got a few ideas.
13:17What's going on?
13:18They don't hear it.
13:19They don't hear it.
13:20They don't hear it?
13:21That's right.
13:21We have to speak stronger in the microphones.
13:24Okay.
13:25We're going to approach the microphones.
13:26Everyone in the upper seats couldn't hear them.
13:30So they're going to speak louder.
13:31And they're going to hear what they call you guys.
13:36If they were saying that in the screen.
13:37So that's when they were talking to him.
13:37So I'm asking them, if they had a word to say to Gaël before the end.
13:41If they were saying that it was the last thing they would say to him now.
13:46Huh...
13:46That is a heartstring question.
15:35saluted by the crowd,
16:21Here we go,
16:22quelques messages.
16:25Gaël Monfils,
16:27je suis une grande fan de toi,
16:29c'est ton dernier Roland-Gros,
16:30c'est ton dernier Roland-Gros.
16:32Mais pour moi,
16:33c'est mon premier temps que je viens.
16:34C'est mon premier temps que je viens.
16:36Et profite bien pour la dernière fois.
16:38Enjoy your last time here.
16:40Pas forcément dans le tennis,
16:43ton énergie, ta folie,
16:44tout l'amour que tu as rencontres,

17:25elle s'appelle Antoine.
17:26et elle s'appelle Gaël.
17:28Wow.
17:29Merci pour les moments
17:31que tu as donné nous a donné.
17:51que vous avez pu me faire vivre.
17:53Merci pour tous ces bons moments
17:53Merci pour tous ces bons moments.
17:54pour plusieurs Roland-Garros
17:56et vous allez beaucoup nous manquer.
17:58Alors, Gaël,
17:59bonne chance,
18:00bonne route.
18:01Je voulais avec Arthur,
18:02mon fils qui a 7 ans,
18:03te rendre un super hommage
18:05pour te dire bravo
18:06et tes grandes inspirations
18:08pour beaucoup,
18:09beaucoup de jeunes.
18:10Merci pour l'inspiration
18:11que vous avez pu me faire.
18:14Je me rappelle que
18:15je te regardais à la fois
18:16sur les camps d'école,
18:17au tennis,
18:18quand j'allais au club
18:19ou même en vacances
18:21je fais tous les matchs à Roland-Garros.
18:22C'était un vrai honneur
18:23d'avoir pu suivre
18:25à Roland-Garros.
18:41Et je crois que vous êtes capable
18:43de gagner ce mois de Roland-Garros.
18:44Vous pouvez gagner ce mois.
18:45Si quelqu'un peut le faire,
18:46vous pouvez.
18:47C'est fort,
18:48on est triste que tu parles
18:50et tu as très bien joué.
18:52Merci.
18:59Et on a aussi un message
19:01très important
19:03qui a été fait en vidéo
19:05et je t'invite à le regarder là.
19:08Gaël, mon fils,
19:10je suis une grande fan de toi.
19:12Non, il y a un petit...
19:22C'est sûr que vous enjouissez
19:24chaque moment.

19:39Elina, merci de me l'avoir calmé,
19:41ce grand fou-là.
19:44Depuis qu'elle est rentrée dans sa vie,
19:45c'est vraiment un autre homme.
19:47Et moi, vraiment,
19:48je suis très, très, très heureux
19:49de vous voir comme ça,
19:51de voir que
19:51vous avez fondé une famille ensemble
19:53et je suis très heureux
19:55de l'équilibre que tu as aujourd'hui.
19:57Et Matt is congratulating
19:58them on there.
19:59The family that they've founded
20:00together
20:01and the balance that they've found
20:03the two of them.
20:04Right, through tennis
20:05and beyond as well.
20:07Elina, avant,
20:07on pouvait faire la fête,
20:08maintenant on n'a plus le droit, Elina.
20:10Ça changeait nos vies, Elina.
20:12Il s'est dit,
20:12Elina,
20:13il est à dire qu'il est able
20:13to come out
20:14and party with us,
20:15mais pas encore.
20:15Vous avez changé
20:17but he's suggesting
20:18that it's perhaps
20:19for the best.
20:20On t'aime, Elina,
20:21merci beaucoup.
20:22La France t'a adopté,
20:23tu le sais, Elina.
20:24Francis adopted her.
20:25That's right.
20:27And you can tell
20:28by the reaction
20:29of the crowd here.
20:31and by her as well.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Tearing up.
20:35Avant de finir tout ça,
20:38je voulais quand même

20:43pendant plein,
20:44plein,
20:44plein d'années.
20:46C'est plus qu'une chance.
20:48Thanks to you all
20:48for everything you've given me
20:50over the years.
20:50It's been the dream
20:51of my life.
20:58People have often
20:59criticized me
21:00for never having
21:00won a Grand Slam.
21:04It was always
21:04a dream of mine.
21:05A goal.
21:09Someone in the crowd
21:10shouted out,
21:10it's not over yet.
21:11There's still a chance.
21:19How much this crowd
21:20would love to believe it.
21:22En vrai de vrai,
21:23je peux vous dire
21:24vraiment la tête haute
21:25que j'ai fait le maximum.
21:27I've always given
21:27my...
21:28The most.
21:38I've always given
21:39everything.
21:40I was never quite
21:40good enough
21:41to win a Grand Slam.
21:43We sing that
21:44with his head held high
21:45that he's promising
21:46the crowd
21:46he's given everything.
21:50He's saying
21:51that maybe I want
21:51something more important
21:52than that.
21:55The tennis career
21:56I'm proud of.
22:02You forget sometimes
22:03all the sacrifices
22:05that you will have
22:07to go through
22:07to get where we are.
22:19He's thanking two people
22:22that he's the reason
22:23he's here.
22:23And that's his mom
22:25and his dad.
22:25and his dad.
22:38I've seen people
22:39talk a lot.
22:40He's never won Roland Garros.
22:42but his whole family
22:43is here.
22:45But they know
22:46what it costs.
22:49All the sacrifices
22:49they made
22:50for me.
22:53Thank you,
22:54mom and dad.
22:54We love you.
22:55If I'm here today,
22:57it's thanks to you two.

23:00it takes.
23:01Not just on the player,
