00:00DJ, drop your leg, it's hot.
00:03Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:05And today, we're counting down our picks for the most demanding dance forms that challenge performers physically, mentally, and artistically.
00:12Pushing the boundaries of what the human body can achieve.
00:17Lay it out of that turn, Jodi. You're trying too hard.
00:22Number 20. Belly Dance.
00:24Don't let the shimmering costumes and hypnotic flowing movements fool you.
00:28Traditional belly dance demands incredible muscular control.
00:39Mastering this art involves isolating different parts of the torso, often simultaneously, requiring exceptional core strength and body awareness.
00:47Unlike rigid athletic tension, this strength must be held while muscles stay elongated and supple.
00:53If the core is too tight, movements look stiff instead of fluid.
00:56So as you straighten the right knee, the right hip will come up, and it's going to shoot straight up
01:01into your body.
01:02So you want to think about meeting your hip bone up to the rib cage, coming back down to center.
01:08Sustained shimmies, undulations, and sharp locks demand stamina, precision, and control, working muscles you never knew existed.
01:16Dancers also embody musicality, translating rhythms and melodies into expressive movements, achieving that effortless, captivating grace through years of dedicated
01:25practice and relentless training, discipline, and focus.
01:39Number 19. Ori Tahiti.
01:42Have you ever seen hips move that fast?
01:55Tahitian Ori is renowned for its incredibly rapid and powerful hip movements typically performed by women, while men exhibit equally
02:02dynamic, grounded, and martial energy.
02:05These intense isolations demand extraordinary stamina, explosive core strength, and precise muscular control, often sustained for extended periods.
02:21Dancers must execute quick, intricate hip patterns while maintaining an upright, stable upper body, and incorporating expressive arm and hand
02:29gestures that tell stories.
02:30The blend of raw power and nuanced storytelling, all set to mesmerizing percussion, requires not just physical prowess, but deep
02:38musicality and unwavering focus.
02:51Number 18. Highland Dance.
02:53Talk about a marvel of strength and control.
02:55Dancers perform on the balls of their feet, often in one spot, demanding incredible calf and ankle strength, balance, and
03:03stamina.
03:12Their upper bodies stay statuesque and proud, arms slicing the air in crisp shapes, as their legs unleash a flurry
03:19of lightning-fast kicks and leaps.
03:21Every step is a masterclass in precision, from the razor sharp turnout to the pinpoint footwork, all delivered with a
03:27poise that nods to centuries of Scottish tradition.
03:39It takes next-level endurance to power through back-to-back sequences, never breaking form, and often wearing heavy woolen
03:46kilts.
03:46It's a test of resilience, grace, and cultural pride.
03:57Number 17. Flamenco.
03:59Flamenco is a full-body, full-heart experience that electrifies every room it enters.
04:05From the first thunderous stomp of the sapoteado, you feel the centuries-old tradition pulsing through the floorboards.
04:20Mastering rapid-fire footwork patterns takes not just athleticism, but rhythmic intuition that feels almost superhuman.
04:38While your legs work overtime, your upper body stands tall, channeling the fierce spirit of generations past.
04:45The arms and hands, with swirling braceo and delicate froreo, paint stories in the air.
04:50You're in dialogue with the music, responding to the singer and guitarist in real-time, sometimes improvising while staying on
04:57beat.
04:58The combination of physical power, delicate control, and passionate artistry creates breathtaking performances.
05:10Number 16. Malambo.
05:12Witnessing Malambo is like watching a percussive storm unfold with the dancer's feet.
05:26This traditional Argentine gaucho dance features incredibly rapid and intricate footwork, or sapoteo, where dancers strike the floor with astonishing
05:34speed and intention, creating complex rhythmic patterns.
05:38It demands exceptional leg strength, stamina, and balance to sustain these explosive movements, often in a very small space.
05:54Dancers must possess supreme core control to maintain an upright, proud posture while their lower bodies move with blur-like
06:01speed and intensity.
06:02The coordination required to execute distinct taps, brushes, and stomps, often mirroring figures on both feet, is a remarkable feat
06:09of athleticism and rhythmic acuity.
06:20Number 15. Tap dance. Tap dance is a conversation between dancer and rhythm, where the feet become intricate percussion instruments.
06:37To create clear, distinct sounds at high speeds, dancers must maintain relaxed, loose ankles while striking heel and toe.
06:45It takes coordination to keep those sounds sharp and syncopated without them becoming muddy.
07:00There's a strong musical side too, with dancers acting as percussive composers, often improvising and playing with the pockets of
07:07the music.
07:08They must master the constant shift of weight to stay agile.
07:11When it's done well, the complex layering of rhythms looks effortless, even though it takes the balance of an Olympic
07:17gymnast and the timing of a metronome.
07:29Number 14. Kartuli. This Georgian dance, traditionally associated with weddings, is a breathtaking display of contrasting grace and ferocity.
07:49Male dancers perform unique footwork, dancing on their toes in soft boots at almost superhuman speed, requiring immense strength in
07:57the feet, ankles, and legs, often without the aid of pointe shoes.
08:00Female dancers, in stark contrast, glide with an ethereal elegance, appearing to float across the stage with minimal discernible movement,
08:08demanding incredible core control and balance to maintain a seemingly motionless upper body.
08:29Traditionally, dance partners may not touch, adding another layer of discipline to the whole thing.
08:34It also involves a deep storytelling element, combining unparalleled athleticism with incredible cultural expression.
08:51Number 13. Hopok. If you've ever seen the Hopok in full swing, you know it's a full-throttle celebration of
08:58Ukrainian spirit.
09:09This national treasure often uses a signature two-on-four rhythm, starting strong and steadily accelerating until the stage feels
09:16like it might lift off.
09:17The men steal the show with gravity-defying squat kicks, soaring leaps, and athletic feats that leave audiences breathless.
09:33Meanwhile, women contrast with lyrical, unified movements that anchor the rhythm.
09:38Even today, Hopok keeps its improvisational edge and roots in Kozak bravado.
09:43Often appearing as a grand finale, it's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
09:47Its electrifying energy and relentless pace are the ultimate tribute to Ukrainian resilience and pride.
10:03Number 12. Aerial Dance. Taking dance to new heights. Literally.
10:08Aerial dance involves performing intricate choreography while suspended from apparatuses like silks, hoops, or ropes.
10:20It looks graceful and floaty, but it's intense.
10:23Dancers need tons of upper body core strength to lift and control their body weight while hanging upside down or
10:29mid-move.
10:30Flexibility is important too, along with sharp awareness of their bodies, since everything is happening mid-air.
10:45A lot of skill comes down to control, moving smoothly through climbs, drops, and wraps without it looking like a
10:51fight with gravity.
10:52The tricky part is making all strength and precision still look expressive and fluid, so it feels like dance rather
10:58than pure acrobatics.
11:07Number 11. Swing Dance.
11:10This thing might turn into something. I'm mistaken. Here comes something now.
11:15Swing Dance is actually an umbrella term for a group of social dances, each with its own steps, speed, rhythms,
11:22and stamina.
11:23However, the one thing they all have in common is just how much you need to think about when the
11:28music strikes.
11:29Dating back to the U.S.'s jazz age, this dance demands athleticism and rapid movements and can involve lifts, flips,
11:37and other aerial activities.
11:39Flip all you want, pal. This ain't the Olympics. It's who's left standing at the end that matters, not how
11:44fancy you are getting there. Let me flip you.
11:47Still not feeling challenged? What if we told you that it's a primarily improvised dance?
11:52You must be in tune with your partner and follow their subtle cues. Not only is it physically demanding, but
11:59it's also mentally stimulating.
12:01Just talking about it leaves us out of breath.
12:03What are you doing? I'm trying to kick you, but I can't reach.
12:07Number 10. The Can-Can.
12:09If you're like us, you can't help but kick as high as possible when you hear.
12:17However, high kicks are just the beginning for the Can-Can. Developed in the early 19th century, the dance marked
12:24a pivotal shift in society.
12:25Its dancers need to be agile and flexible because there's plenty of kicking, cartwheeling, jump splits, and other strenuous moves,
12:34with barely a moment to breathe between them.
12:37Additionally, you have to keep smiling and exude sexiness and confidence no matter how exhausted you might be.
12:43When you're part of the most famous cabaret in the world, and when people come from all over the world
12:47to see you, you can't afford to be tired or just half-hearted. It's just not possible.
12:52The dance has been immortalized across popular culture and attracts roughly 600,000 spectators at its most famous home.
13:00So we think we can-can leave this one to the professionals.
13:04Are you feeling the truth?
13:07No!
13:07No!
13:09No!
13:11No!
13:12No!
13:13No!
13:14No!
13:14No!
13:15No!
13:16No!
13:17No!
13:18No!
13:19No!
13:22No!
13:26No!
13:27No!
13:27distinct hold. However, we're talking about its ancestor, the Argentine tango, a social
13:33dance from South America that was often performed by men.
13:47The style incorporates African influences and has a strict rhythm and some core dance
13:53steps, but it mainly relies on improvisation. At its heart, it's about being intuitive to your
13:58partner's movements, and its staccato steps require a lot of concentration. After all,
14:04you don't want to step on any toes or kick any shins.
14:17The Argentine tangle will leave you breathless, not just because it's so intense and sensual.
14:23It demands precision, force, and a whole lot of passion.
14:33Okay, just try this for us. Stand poker straight, pin your arms to your sides, and kick your
14:40legs about without moving your upper body. Not as easy as it looks, is it?
14:44You're not allowed to move your body at all, just your feet.
14:47I'm gonna try and not move my body.
14:49Looks perfect.
14:50Does it?
14:50Yes.
14:50I'm really itchy right now, though.
14:52To master this style, a dancer must keep their upper half practically motionless. At the same time,
14:58their legs tackle intricate footwork beneath the waterline.
15:10It can be performed solo or in even-numbered groups. It has evolved into multiple forms,
15:16including the Irish Step Dance, made famous by shows like Riverdance. Also, watching an ensemble
15:21of dancers create impressive shapes and patterns in perfect synchronization is incredibly satisfying.
15:27It requires a lot of discipline and concentration, but the results are hypnotic.
15:45Number 7. Sayal Sabanko
15:47This spectacularly challenging dance hails from the Philippines and translates as Dance on a Bench.
15:53Indeed, it involves performers navigating their moves along a narrow bench top.
16:05The dancers are expected to perform exciting routines while sharing their limited platform with
16:11partners. The choreography also entails jumping on and off the bench in time to the music. Plus,
16:17you don't want to leave your partner hangin'.
16:25As the dance progresses, benches are added, making the stage taller but no wider, as if it wasn't already
16:32complicated enough. You need terrific spatial awareness, outstanding balance, and a strong core.
16:39This isn't to dance for the faint-hearted or weak-willed.
16:51Number 6. Caleña Salsa
16:53Of all the types of salsa out there, nothing's quite as spicy as the Caleña Salsa.
17:06Hailing from Cali, Colombia, considered by many as the salsa capital of the world, this version
17:11stands out for its rapid footwork, fast-moving hips, and even merging some acrobatic moves.
17:17Combining Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, and Puerto Rican rhythms, this dance focuses less on traditional
17:22cross-body leads and more on quick and fluid movements from the hips down.
17:37It's the sheer speed that makes this dance so tricky to master.
17:48Some prefer to dance alone, as a partner would only slow them down.
17:52So, if you're still grappling with the basic salsa steps,
17:56this dance might just be a little too caliente to handle right now.
18:00My Caleña instructor, Jenny, pushed me to do harder steps,
18:03and each lesson was an exhausting workout compared to earlier ones that I had had.
18:09Number 5. Breakdancing
18:11This innovative street dance has been breaking ground since at least the 1970s,
18:16and was developed by African-American and Puerto Rican communities in New York.
18:20Breaking takes inspiration from a wide spectrum of sources and requires high athleticism, energy, and artistry.
18:28Part post-modern dance, part stage performance, part martial art,
18:32where competitors use an arsenal of stunts and swag to prove once and for all who has the best moves.
18:38There's an endless amount of moves, but they tend to fall into four categories.
18:42Top rock, down rock, power moves, and freezes.
18:46These require an insane amount of agility, velocity, strength, and stamina.
18:51Is it any wonder it's recognized as an Olympic event?
18:54Think that's cool?
18:55Check out Animation Dance.
18:57This hip-hop style gives the illusion of moving under strobe lights.
19:01It's mesmerizing when done correctly, but it's not as easy as it looks.
19:17Number 4. Capoeira Dance
19:19This Brazilian art form has a fascinating yet dark history.
19:24At first look, it's a mixture of martial arts and dance and music, but it's so much more.
19:31It reportedly started in the 16th century by enslaved people primarily from West Africa,
19:36who were forbidden from practicing their culture, so they disguised their combat techniques as a dance.
19:42Indeed, it has also been used as self-defense, but ultimately this is where sport and artistry combine.
19:48Capoeira is a symbol of Afro-Brazilian culture,
19:51and of ethnic miscegenation and resistance is a source of pride to its community and to all Brazilians.
19:58It's a majestic and powerful dance that demands intense training and dedication.
20:04Participants gather in a circle while those in the center execute kicks,
20:08flips, gymnastics, acrobatics, and other demanding choreography.
20:12In 2014, UNESCO officially recognized it as, quote,
20:16an intangible cultural heritage. When done right,
20:19the Capoeira has the ability to render its audience speechless with amazement.
20:24Capoeira is, it's everything, it's an art, art.
20:32Number three, Bharatnatyam.
20:34Bharatnatyam is one of India's oldest classical dance styles,
20:37and it's as challenging as it is beautiful.
20:50Dancers need strong legs to hold the Aramandi pose for long periods,
20:54and Adavu's footwork must be precise to create complex rhythms.
20:58But it's not only about the legs, the whole body is always at work.
21:02Dancers need endurance, flexibility, and control over every detail, from their hands to their eyes.
21:18There's a deep sense of rhythm and structure that must feel natural,
21:22though it comes from ancient musical traditions.
21:24Like its close relative, Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam dancers hide their effort well,
21:29showing only grace and storytelling, while discipline quietly does all the heavy lifting.
21:44Number two, Zaoli.
21:46A folk dance belonging to the Guru community in the Ivory Coast,
21:50Zaoli is considered one of the world's most impossible dances.
21:54And for good reason, just look at those feet go.
22:10Dating back to the 1950s, and possibly earlier,
22:14this dance is often performed during celebrations where each performer showcases their talent,
22:18typically wearing a mask that symbolizes their history.
22:22You have to be quick, you have to be creative, and to make matters even harder,
22:27you're not allowed to repeat steps.
22:37Yep, you have to move and think at the speed of light to ensure your dance is entirely original.
22:42It's a physically and mentally demanding dance, so we'll just keep watching from the sidelines.
22:58Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
23:02Hula hula, graceful swaying hips, storytelling hands, demanding fluid core control, and expressive movement.
23:09Every single part of your body needs to work. You should be gasping for air,
23:14but you can't. You need to look exactly the same as when you first started.
23:20Samba. Explosive rhythmic hip isolations and fast footwork demand high stamina, balance, and vibrant energy.
23:34Tinikling dance. Precision footwork between bamboo poles requires lightning reflexes, agility, and perfect timing.
23:48Poole dancing requires immense strength, flexibility, core control, and artistry for gravity defying powerful athleticism.
23:57Don't you tell me tonight, I don't run, I wanna suffer for my sins.
24:07Majorette dancing. High kicks, intricate baton twirling, and precise formations demand incredible coordination and stamina.
24:14Don't you know, you're dancing with me.
24:25Before we continue, check out this single from Sound Mojo's album, Balance, classical music reimagined as rock, hard rock, and
24:33metal.
24:33Check out the full track and album below.
24:37Gold buys silence, guilt buys prayer.
24:41I am the echo, you can't outrun the jokes on you.
24:46The blade's begun.
24:51Number 1. Ballet.
24:53If you work harder every day than you've ever worked in your life,
24:57this school will turn you into the best dancer you can possibly be.
25:01That may or may not be the kind of dancer I have room for in the company.
25:04While many of us nailed the five basic positions as children,
25:08mastering this art form professionally is a much harder endeavor.
25:12A study from 1975 placed ballet as, quote,
25:16the number one most physically and mentally demanding activity.
25:20The arm is lifted here.
25:22The head is here.
25:25Yes, yes, yes.
25:27Lift through here.
25:29Lifted, but not tucked, not tucked in.
25:31Dancers must have maximum control over their bodies.
25:34And each step follows a rigorous set of rules.
25:38Behind every elegant, graceful, and striking movement,
25:41there's an intense level of flexibility, strength, and endurance.
25:45And that's before we even consider pointe.
25:47It takes years of practice to translate that strength and stamina
25:50into something so beautiful and delicate.
25:53You need to be an athlete and an artist.
25:55Is it any wonder ballet dancers train from such a young age?
25:59How long have you been dancing?
26:01I've been dancing since I was actually in my mom's tummy.
26:05Did we miss any dance forms that make you sweat just thinking about them?
26:08Let us know in the comments.
