00:00Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a 25.7 billion US dollar plan
00:06to boost Canada's defences in the giant Arctic region.
00:09This move comes as Ottawa seeks to decrease its reliance on the US.
00:16Canada has traditionally relied on US to help monitor the Canadian Arctic
00:20which covers 4.4 million square kilometers of land and sea,
00:24larger than India, and is almost completely uninhabited.
00:28US President Donald Trump's tariffs and recent comments about annexing Canada
00:33have put ties under strain.
00:35With this plan, we are taking control of our future.
00:42We will no longer rely on others to defend our Arctic security or to fuel our economy.
00:51We're taking full responsibility for defending our sovereignty.
00:55And we are unleashing a range of new economic opportunities for the over 140,000 Nordeners
01:03who will benefit from stronger, more connected communities, more opportunities, and a higher standard of living.
01:12Canada has four rudimentary Arctic airfields that can accommodate six fighters each
01:16and around 2,000 soldiers dotted around the region.
01:20Canada's Arctic region comprises approximately 25% of the global Arctic.
01:26Although the region is rich in rare minerals, it has very little infrastructure
01:31which combined with the extreme coal makes mining operations extremely complex and costly.
